It's also odd that he wants to switch everything to Linux when it sounds like he's got an entire Microsoft Shop going with the exception of Macs in one department.

If you aren't a Linux Guru - I don't see the point of creating a headache for yourself by trying to switch to Linux when the Microsoft Foundation is already there.

What he saves in licensing costs will ultimately be lost in troubleshooting because he doesn't appear to have the skills necessary to work this out properly - if you don't know how, than I don't suggest trying it out.

Well yes, their revenue comes from there.

Steam However, doesn't have to worry about the distribution costs so much, so they make more per sale than Gamestop does - so the amount of Sales that Gamestop loses (regardless of revenue) would go to people using Steam.

Essentially, it seems like Gamestops revenue won't change much, but Steams is likely to go up.

I can't remember if it was on here or some other site but I read a bit where a guy went to go buy Oblivion from GameStop and he just so happened to enter when someone was trying to sell their copy of Oblivion to the store. The used copy from the store was going for 30 or 40 bucks while they were only willing to pay like 10 dollars for buying it back.

The guy interrupted and offered $20 for the exchange and the two of them left the store happy.

I think I may do this with some of my older games - I'll go stand right out front of Gamestop and huck my goods.

if money is put to indie teams, those indie teams will get turned into just other manufactories for profit. and when they dont profit enough they will be shut down as divisions.

And then more money can be put into a new indie team - and the cycle repeats - Thats what he's saying.

The World of Goo dev isn't entirely against the big factory type churn out profits game development - he understands that it isn't going away.

All he's saying is that this small change in the structure will keep the gaming scene fresh - we won't get stagnated by Halo:umpteenmillion or Call of Duty over 9000. If they took a small amount of money that they spend on the bigger titles to help support the smaller shops, they essentially have an R&D Department that can give them a new product to manufacture when the big titles no longer sell.

Denying liberty to those who seek to deny liberty to others is not oppression. It's the opposite.

Well then there is no such thing as oppression. Or Liberty. Or something. That's a shakey ground or slippery slope that I wouldn't stand behind, it's far too black and white.

What qualifies as "denying liberty" to others? The fact that I'm using a computer right now means that I've supported computer companies that set up sweat shops in a lot of third world countries for all their goods and resources which means I've contributed to the poor state of their economy and I'm essentially keeping people in poverty over in some other country. I've supported the system that aims to take away the civil rights of some people and made them work in hazardous conditions.

Does that mean that mean that I'm oppressive? Simply denying another person's liberty? How many degrees of seperation must it go through before its no longer on me?

I mean, if this logic holds, then locking me up for using a computer is not oppression - it's the opposite.

I think you'd be better off saying that Denying liberty to those who seek to deny liberty to others is still oppression - but people need to redefine oppression and realize that some kinds of oppression are good for society.

By and large, we don't have contracts. See, we're not slaves, we can quit at will, so as soon as a better employer pops up (for whatever definition of "better" you like) we can go there at the drop of a hat.

Competition works pretty well most of the time.

By and large, you DO have contracts, those are the papers you sign when you first start your job - that basically said "I've read the SOP manual and I'll do my job" and all that. Even Wal Mart Employees are on the contract.

Competition works well in some scenarios - but currently the US is in a situation where there's too much competition. Yeah, you can quit at will if a better employer pops up - but how often does one just "pop up"? You have to be actively searching of course. And if your boss finds out that you're searching for another job they'll find some grounds to ride you out.
You want an extra week vacation? There's usually someone else willing to work without it - they just got the job.

Competition means that the job goes to the lowest bidder. Which is NOT good for working conditions. In other developed nations - those basic perks are required by Law. I don't have to worry about someone undercutting me on that.
