According to Basuki Hadimuljono, head of the national team managing the disaster, the project will have a budget of 4 billion rupiah (US$440,000) paid for by PT Lapindo Brantas, the oil drilling company that some locals blame for the disaster.
We have all our servers sitting at Exodus' Irvine Data Center, and from the time we noticed a problem to the time we stopped noticing the problem, only about 20-30 mins. had elapsed. If there were a few hours of downtime, then it didn't affect everyone.
Seems odd to me. I also have a cable modem and I get more than enough sub 100ms ping servers. But I guess cable providers and location can make a difference. I'm in CA and have Cox@Home. The netcode as far as I can tell is great, but I've never played on a server with greater than 300ms ping.
I've been playing it fine for the past few weeks (first the demo, then the retail w/ downloaded binaries). What I want to see fixed is the damn "doesn't work under E" bug, though I grow more fond of Sawmill as the days go on (sorry to go offtopic there)
Do you have a Voodoo card? The Glide Renderer works fine, I have a TNT2, the Mesa Renderer segfaults on me. Oh yeah, and Sawmill rules:)
Point being, I think that baby-steps are important. You're dealing with a company that isn't about to just leap from one paradigm to another.
Oh, don't get me wrong, I think what they're doing is great and Brandon should be commended for helping them take these steps towards open source. I hope everything works out for the better and that they take a few more steps in that direction. I was really just trying to point out that while the original news article made it sound like the the whole source base to UT had been open sourced, it was really just certain libraries.
Anyway, congratulations to Epic and Digital Extremes for an awesome game and for having the balls to try something new.
All of UT is not being open sourced. The engine is still closed. What is being open sourced is certain portions like the Mesa Renderer, the Glide Renderer, the Audio Libraries, The X Renderer and the X Launcher.
So while it's a step in the right direction, it's not exactly the bliss that everyone thinks it is. Still, being my favorite game right now, I'd really like to see the Mesa Renderer completed so I can play it under Linux.
Currently it doesn't support any other cards, and unlike Q3 they only released the Glide renderer, so you won't be able to get it to work on your TNT2. The reason you can get Q3 to work is because it uses OpenGL.
Having said that, Brandon Reinhart got permission to release certain portions of the code. Some of that code will be what he has done so far with a Mesa renderer, which means that support for other cards could be just around the corner.
There aren't any yet. The only thing you can do right now is rip the video off a DVD and save it as a file, then watch it. You can also rip the audio into a file then listen to it. You can _theoretically_ extract and watch the video at the same time, but because they don't have any optimized routines for it, you'd need at least a 600Mhz machine, probably more (the author only had a 450).
Look up DVD articles here on Slashdot for the past couple of days and you'll find a link to this stuff.
Well, I've been wearing glasses since I was 3, that makes 20 years now. I wore contacts for 8 years. It gets old, having to take them out and clean them every night, then putting them in the next day. I'm wearing glasses again now, and I don't think they look bad, I have nothing against them, but I would much rather be able to see normally with my own eyes.
One of my sister's friends just had it done, and she says it's great. I don't know how much it costs, but as soon as I finish paying off my car, I'm getting it done.
Having said that, there are drawbacks to the game. The big weakness at the moment is network play... I went to play a few games of CTF, domination, and FFA, and found most of the servers (even those with good pings) to be almost unplayable. The only thing I can liken this to is playing quake][ over 28.8, which is pretty rough. 384k DSL should easily be able to handle most network games, but the speed that was so overpowering in quake3 was not to be found in UT. I realize that this is a very early build, but I think that the network code needs alot of optimizing, since this is supposed to be the primary focus of this game.
Oddly enough, this is the complete opposite from the experience that I've had with UT. Admittedly I have a cable modem, but UT is almost smooth as butter on low ping servers, whereas in Q3 players kept disappearing and reappearing, etc... I found Q3 to be a pretty lousy network play experience.
Note that I _do_ think Q3 is a good game, there are a few things in Q3 that I like better than their counterparts in UT, but overall I prefer UT.
Right. So we should all stop playing UT and start playing Q3 instead.
Come on. Whatever happened to choices? I personally believe that UT is much more enjoyable than Q3. But that's just _my_ personal opinion. Sure Q3 has a larger user base than Unreal, id has a huge following, but why should that matter? Windows has a larger user base than Linux, but you don't see us running Windows, do you?
It's all about choices. Epic Games has provided the Linux gaming community with another excellent choice, and they should be commended and encouraged to continue this trend in the future.
If you'd read Brandon's actualy.plan update, or if haven had actually quoted the thing in context, you would realize that it doesn't kill the whole system, at most it'll freeze X up, and sending X a restart will wake it up again. There is a problem with the audio, but that doesn't affect the server. There's also a problem with the cursor, but that doesn't affect X either as the UT server is run from the command line. As far as I know the UT server is solid. All these issues pertain to the client.
What I've noticed it do a couple of times, is actually put the VideoRam line in, but it comments it. So it has the correct amount, it's just commented out. That could be what my problem is, unfortunately I'm at work, not at home so I can't check it out:)
I usually check to make sure that it hasn't done this, but I might have forgotten this time. If this is the problem then I'm going to feel really stupid:)
Yes, I believe starting with 3.3.4, the TNT2 is supported using the SVGA server. In fact, I have it running at home on my Creative Labs 3D Blaster TNT2 Ultra. Although it does still have some problems, like I can't get any resolution better than 1024x768.
All I need now is to get Mesa working correctly so I can get Quake3 to run! Woo hoo!
I used to have this same problem, until I realized that the images that I was trying to add text to where all Indexed, and anti-aliasing only works on RGB images (D'oh!).
Always convert your images to RGB first before you start modifying them.
1. Jedi's are so cool. There really aren't any cool Jedi's in 4,5 and 6. Yoda isn't exactly that tough and all he does is lift luke's space ship. Big fucking deal. Obi-wan gets his ass kicked really easily by Darth. He's 60+ years old, what do you expect. Epsiode 1 has great jedi and great fight scenes.
Umm, Obi-Wan didn't get his ass kicked by Darth Vader. He let Darth Vader kill him. If you didn't pick that up, then you really need to go watch it again.
2. Why didn't the trade federation use storm troopers? It seems to me that droids would be much more difficult to maintain. Epsecially considering that they had thousands of them. And they never really killed anything. They just got their asses kicked. Remember the scene when obi wan is in the hanger and says "I'll take out the droids," and kills a dozen of them with no problem? You'd never see Luke or Han going after a dozen storm troopers. In fact, they ran like hell in Starwars when six or so came at them.
Did you see any Stormtroopers in this movie? No? That's because there aren't any yet. The Emperor started the whole Stormtrooper thing.
If I recall correctly, plenty of Gungans died in the battle with the droids.
Of course you don't see Luke or Han going after a group of Stormtroopers by themselves. First of all, Han isn't a Jedi. Second of all, Luke isn't a real Jedi either. The Jedi in Episode I have been trained since they were very, very young. Remember in the council chamber when Yoda says that Anakin is too old to begin training? He's 9!!! The Jedi in these movies have all the training, they would have sliced through Stormtroopers as easily as they sliced through droids.
3. Anakin's mom is psycho. Would you let your kid fly a pod racer at 600 miles an hour with people shooting at you and other racers trying to knock you into mountain walls? Hell no!
Anakin's mom didn't have a choice. They were slaves remember? They had to do whatever Watto told them. She couldn't have stopped him even if she wanted to (which she did). Besides, some things you do for the greater good. She understood that there was something special about Anakin, and that racing for Qui-Gon was something he HAD to do.
5. Lucas has some very fucked up family values. Just look at the relationships in his starwars movies: Luke and Leah - Brother and sister. Queen Amilda and Anakin - 16 year old and 9 year old. He's a pedophile incest lover.
Luke and Leah didn't know they were brother and sister. Amidala is supposed to be 14. While Anakin may already be in love with her, I'm sure she just sees him as a charming little boy right now.
8. Would I see it again? Definately. Sober? Probably not.
No wonder you missed just about every subtlety there was in the movie. Try watching it sober and actually paying to attention to what's going on. You may find out there's a lot more to it than just a really hot chick.
Uhh, actually, here in California the Carl's Jr. chain of restaurants brings your food to your table. You get a number when you order, then you go sit and wait for them to bring it to you. It works rather well.
This is really funny to me, considering I just read an interview with someone in the computer gaming industry (Probably from Epic or id) who was comparing the current state of first person shooter games as being similar to porn movies.
While I'm on the subject, if humans are the only energy source, where do they get the energy to grow the food to nourish the humans? It didn't make sense.
It said in the movie that they liquefy the dead and feed them to the living intravenously.
It seemed the romantic twist at the end was very forced and didn't have any buildup from earlier in the movie. It seemed to just come from nowhere.
Remember when they first got Neo, he was sleeping in his room and Trinity brought him dinner? Remember Cipher saying "I don't remember you bringing me dinner when I first got here."? I'm sure there were other parts, it really didn't come as a surprise to me, I saw it coming.
Then again maybe I'm just used to their being some kind of love interest in just about every movie nowadays so I was expecting it.
If you check out the "Behind the Scenes" section at The Matrix Webpage they have pictures of the setup they used to do the paused pan effect. And yes, it is a long row of cameras.
I don't believe you.
From the article:
According to Basuki Hadimuljono, head of the national team managing the disaster, the project will have a budget of 4 billion rupiah (US$440,000) paid for by PT Lapindo Brantas, the oil drilling company that some locals blame for the disaster.
Everything looks fine now.
What's even worse is that the top of the line Voodoo is supposed to come with it's own AC Adapter . It has to be plugged directly into a wall socket!!!
Seems odd to me. I also have a cable modem and I get more than enough sub 100ms ping servers. But I guess cable providers and location can make a difference. I'm in CA and have Cox@Home. The netcode as far as I can tell is great, but I've never played on a server with greater than 300ms ping.

You probably downloaded the old 334 server. The new version is 348 (the server _should_ be there now).
> (The server I did download kept crashing with 'Illegal Instruction'. Any ideas?)
Do you have a Cyrix chip? It doesn't work on Cyrix chips. I had the same problem.
B) Are the default rpms built for RH? Yes. I'm downloading one right now (from ftp.enlightenment.org).
I usually check to make sure that it hasn't done this, but I might have forgotten this time. If this is the problem then I'm going to feel really stupid :)
I only have a 15" monitor, so getting those higher resolutions isn't *really* a problem anyway. I can play Civ:CTP just fine at 1024x768. :)

Start it up using setiathome > /dev/null. That will send all the program output (not including error messages) to limbo.
