He wrote the window manager I was always looking for: ion.
I now use it more than a year and I am very happy with it. If you prefer the keyboard to operate your computer, try out this fine wm, you might like it!
Parent is right. I just pointed out another poster, that Firefox is still at a pre 1.0 state. There will always be security flaws, but if Firefox gets as stable as Mozilla is, you shouldn't experience glitches like sweeped out profile dirs and such. BTW: Such things NEVER happened to me and I upgrade Firefox really often and sometimes even use nightlies!
Please bear in mind that Firefox is still at a pre 1.0 version. Although many proprietary software products tend ot increase version numbers at every second or third release in the world of openly developed software a pre 1.0 version number states that the product is not ready for production use.
Sad but true... there is no official GTK 1.x build anymore. The source doesn't even compile cleanly with the old GTK libs (as a quick try with 0.9 revealed for me).
...that many webmasters/webdesigners don't care about dial-up users (anymore)! I personally don't need high resolution images just to navigate a website but rather visit websites which load fast. What do I need a high speed internet connection for if nice and colorful thingies eat up my bandwidth and I end up with the same experience as with a 56k modem?
I use stow for things which are not available via packages. It's not as intrusive as installing custom baked packages and much cleaner than installing somewhere under/usr/local or/opt because you don't have to rely on a make uninstall or clutter these directories with subdirs.
I heard something about Mozilla's incompatibility with the Debian Free Software Guidelines. What's the current state of the process? Will there be Mozilla packages for Debian in future? Does the discussion on this issue still go on? Somebody please explain.
I could solve the issue with unknown/unhandled filetypes, I just had to comment out a few lines of javascript to disable the dialog. Not quite elegant, but it works. I don't have the code right at the hand now, but if you are interested, drop me a mail: t.csoegoer AT web.de
That document is the best one around to 'dumb down' a Mozilla (based) browser. However there are some issues left out. It's a pity that the mozilla.org team is not working on a kiosk mode.
When I have some more time and get the permissions from my boss I will write a step-by-step HOWTO for making a Mozilla based kiosk browser (on Debian GNU/Linux).
These are two seperate features. The first is not a search, but a "guessed" URL. Firefox tries to guess 'tired.com' (or.net,.org, etc.) from 'tired' so you get to 'www.tired.com'.
The second one is the normal search feature which you can tweak around with like another poster mentioned.
Anybody knows why there are no more GTK 1.x builds since 0.9? I need to use that instead of the GTK 2.x build to circumvent some bugs (in connection with the ion2 window manager).
You could always disable booting from a removable media in the BIOS (and protect it with a password). Sure, this is not ultra-secure, but I guess these roomates wouldn't go that far as opening the pc case, just to read the latest spam...
People don't have the time or money to maintain something as a video game, even one as small as a MUD.
There are some quiet big and really complex MUDs I wouldn't call "small videogames". The core of these MUDs is mostly old and [t]rusty, but they have rich content. At least here in Germany a few big MUDs are running well and healthy, with new players signing on every day and a lot of people maintaining and enhancing these virtual worlds.
there is no good reason to restrict gameplay to text-only when you can spruce it up with immersive graphical environments
You completely forgot the fact that some things are simply not possible to "implement" in super-duper graphical games. Don't underestimate the role of the player's fantasy!
It's kind of like saying that books are a dying genre, because the industry is moving towards movies...:-)
As it gets more and more insecure to use P2P filesharing services, the users should consider switching to a filesharing network which fully respects privacy and completely disables censorship (achieved by encryption)
As other posters said, not everybody thinks about patenting an idea just because it's useful. But even if this would be the case: not everybody has the money to file a patent. It's not done just by walking into the patent office and filling out some form... To file a patent means spending a lot of money for lawyers and a constant yearly fee. Of course amazon don't really have to worry about these costs.
This is ok for some sites, but no way a real solution. I hate using forms to send email and I'm pretty sure that I'm not alone. You don't have the possibility to archive your outgoing mail, to save the address for later use etc.
There is a webpage for the 20th anniversary of the GNU project, but I can't see any planned events. Does anybody know if there are or have been some GNU parties around the world?
A library which abstracts the creation of widgets might be nice but - despite the fact that it would only be possible to a certain extent - wouldn't help much. This whole integration topic is more about things like kparts, kdcop, k... I guess.
There is a configure option to compile Mozilla with QT, however AFAIK the development is discontinued. But then again, how could one benefit of a version of Mozilla built with QT if it doesn't use [some of] the KDE libraries?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you get much interoperability with KDE apps just by using QT.

The new version can run Windows 3.1
:-)
Take into account that this announcment was made on April 1st...

For details see the Freenet Project homepage.
BTW there is another interesting (though by far not as widely used) filesharing network, called GNUnet.
You may want to read an article in Linux Gazette:
So You Wanna Create Your Own x86 Operating System?
nobody though of patenting it before?

This is how Doom looked like when it was still at alpha stage.
What about recycling the "Tits and Ass Beer" commercial? The only thing it could be reused would be a beer named something like "Breasts and Bums".
