So.... The DMCA states that the penalty for making false accusations is Perjury. They made a false claim against the writer. Nail them! Seriously. The law isn't entirely one sided. There is a penalty if they lie in their claims. Make the law work for you.
The poster says, "With news that the number of internet users is shrinking."
But this is completely and utterly a lie! The article he links to clearly states that the number of internt users is increasing, this is simply happening at a slower rate than last year.
what is the point of paying them to run your ads, in the face of such a relatively small subscriber base?

Whenever I go on vacation or travel, I still check my email, read usnet and waste time on slashdot because I have NetZero on my laptop. I just plug it into the hotel phone jack and make a local call to my isp! It really is great. Having to sign up for internet service in some city where I would only be there for the weekend is kinda silly. So there's one reason why people use NetZero over AT&T.
This well alert you to all of the most common errors in logic people use in every day thinking, and will help you detect when someone is using bad stastics, outright logic errors, or other misleading practices to feed you a line of baloney. For instance, a texas lawmaker once wanted to outlaw divorce because a study strongly related divorce and poverty. His flawed logic was that by outlawing divorce, it would end poverty. Many, many thought proccesses like this slip by us today without us really noticing, but by reading The Fine Art of Baloney Detection we can notice them.
"If you run windows and office at home, you should use a PocketPC! It runs all the same stuff!" They say that "If you run Win2k, than Exchange, SQLServer, and IIS run the best!" They want everything to tie to them.
Well, Good!
This is quite a trollish thing to say. PocketPC has a consistent user interface with windows programs. That is great! I really wish other operating systems I use would be more consistent. It would make my job easier. Good for Microsoft for doing that. Shame on you for trying to play it as some sort of evil anti-competitive ploy. It is anti-competitive because it is GOOD.
While we are on the subject of great ideas to patent, I once came up with a gem!
A Jump to Conclusions Mat!
It would be this mat on the floor, with different conclusions, and would jump to them, you see? It should be easily adaptable to a mouse-like system. And I already filed for my patent, too!
Humans are natural. Just because we make more noticeable changes to our environment than other animals doesn't mean we aren't nature. If a beaver dams a river it is nature, but if people do it, it is polution? There is no one perfect state nature can be in. We are not ruing a 'balance'. Nature is always changing, animals are always evolving and becoming extinct. There is no 'nature' to 'preserve' and we humans are natural, too.
They aren't the first to ship mozilla as the main browser. Progeny Debian comes with Mozilla is the default web browser. Netscpe 4 is also there, as is konq, but Mozilla is the default. And it works well. Really well. If you haven't tried Progeny, check it out.
Programmers who wish to produce binary applications that will run on any LSB-conforming implementation should follow this procedure:
Link your binary application with the LSB's filter libraries found in/usr/lsb/lib to determine at compile time if your application is using only LSB defined APIs.
Link your binary application with the LSB/lib/ld-lsb.so.1 dynamic linker/loader.
Verify your binary application with the LSB's/usr/bin/lsbappchk tool to determine at runtime if your application is using only LSB defined APIs.
If people start writing their programs to comply to this binary compatibility will be something I would consider doing, instead of compiling from source. They guy down my hall who installed linux and asks me questions every time he trys to install software (since they all install differently) could leave me the heck alone. It would be good no matter how you look at it.
Why doesn't one person just pay $15, download it, then redistribute the ISO images on their own server? Surely that is legal, right? I mean if libranet wants to charge for every copy made that makes them the same as the record companies.
Yes, but Libranet charges $15 to download! I have never seen this done with a linux distro. I doubt they will catch on just because they are trying this scheme.
What if someone makes a copyrighted song with part of an OpenAudience song in it? Is it like the GPL where someone cant use open code in their own code unles they make their code open too? What if someone makes an Open song with, say, the bass line to a metallica, and someone else makes an open song with the drum part...
Could someone play a metallica song as Open because they got all the parts for it from different Open songs?
I use a program called SupervisionCam which is available for windows. It has a feature of playing a.wav when motion is detected. You can also set the motion threshold to whatever you want. All you need is a wav of loud sirens, turn the volume all the way up, get amplified speakers, and any teenagers who sneak inside will shit their pants when they hear it! The only problem is if they dont get scared away they can steal your computer and your speakers:(. Also, unless he wants to have a 25/7 internet connection to his shellfish place, he wont be able to upload pictures to catch vandals fast enough to stop them from stealing the computer with all the pictures on it! Kinda defeats the purpose.
If you have never checked it out,
download it!. It is just one ISO that can be easily be burnt to a CD. Easiest install ever. And in their config, you can set up X resolutions, color depths and stuff from the same gui config tool that does sounds, window managers, and stuff like that. Check it out!
Roblimo, think, if you had a daughter, and we stopped the war on drugs, as you would like to see happen. Now they are everywhere. Easy to get. All her friends do them, and despite you teaching her that they are bad for her, when she is 14 years old she cares about what her friends say, not what you say. She starts doing drugs with her friends, and they do them a lot since they are so easy to get. One night she gets high enough that she doesn't know what she is doing. She starts to have a seziure. Her friends are all high too, and they don't know what to do. They are afriad to take her to the hospital because they would get in big trouble and are in no position to drive. It doesn't matter because she is dead right there on the floor in her own vomit before they could have made it there.
And you want to make scenes like this common by making it easy for kids to get drugs? I hate you.
What you don't seem to understand is that although you were a lot smarter than most when you were in middle school, there are manny, manny kids that age who are much less intelligent. Young kids can NOT make the right decisions on their own. Thats why their parents need to keep them away from situations that could be bad for them by doing things like funding programs that make it hard for kids to get drugs.
Someday, when you have middle school age kids who aren't as smart as you were at that age, you will look back on what you wrote and realize how short-sighted you were.
Lets face it. My father is convinced I could do no wrong. If I got into trouble at school in my father's eyes I was always completely justified. Also if I got in trouble at school and I told the story to my parents, I am sure I would 'round' the facts in my favor. I know that this would be similar for most parents and childern. If we knew the administrator's side and the other children's side of the story we could act much more responsibly.
Now it seems to me that this kid was greatly wronged. But my experience with child-parent interaction makes me wonder if he really was wronged as much as it seems. We don't know if he has had a history of violent behavior or anything like that. When you only have one side of a story, especially one like this, take it with a grain of salt.
How do we know this is real? That is just a message posted in the slackware forum. Anybody could go to that forum, and for name: put "Patrick J. Volkerding". Seriously, I make up a new names sometimes when I post to that forum. And there is no mention of this in the slackware news section. I would think that if Patrick would have such important news he would put it on the front page of slackware.com, not in some forum post that could be easily spoofed.
Now I am not trying to say that I think this is fake. I just won't believe it until it is posted somewhere where I can be sure only Patrick could have put it up.
I video conference all the time with someone who has a slow computer. I am a freshman in college and my girlfriend is a senior in high school who lives 2.5 hours away. I got us both webcams for christmas ($30 logitech quickcams) which give okimage quality. But her computer is only like a Pentium 400. And our netmeeting video conferences look great. Good enough that with the video stuff we can make 'phone sex' look plain silly.:)
So you are right it is the next killer app, but you are wrong about requiring a huge amount of bandwidth.
Well, that would be great. I am sure that if they only change the USB protocol there would be kernel patches for making USB devices work. But what if they actually change the shape of the USB connectors on the Xbox? There goes the idea of using normal USB devices...

"Hold on a sec. Nuts, the computer locked up again. I am going to have to reboot. Here's another pill. Oh, and that'll be another $450."
Gee, thanks Doc.
But this is completely and utterly a lie! The article he links to clearly states that the number of internt users is increasing, this is simply happening at a slower rate than last year.
Geeze. It makes me sick.

"I always thought I was a great programmer even when I wasn't."
I thank that is a great quote, and it describes perfectly how many people on this forum? :)
This is perfect for Quickies, but we haven't had any in several months! What the heck is up?

When the version of Apache that you have on your Xbox DVD is found to have a huge security hole, what DO you DO?
How do you patch the whole? DVD is read only.
