This statement really says everything about why McVoy feels the way he does; he's only thinking about money. He has completely forgotten that open source software doesn't require a profit to exist or be innovative.
Here's a case in which the standard question "but does it run Linux?" is actually relevant. China getting into the PC business in a big way could have an impact on the availability of machines on which one doesn't have to pay the Microsoft tax
Ugh, to me paying the China tax would be worse than paying the MS tax.
Too bad Amazon's not incompetent like the *.Malls were and they'd shipped my family pack ($150 after rebate). Did full backups this weekend in anticipation, though I've never (knock on Titanium) had an Apple upgrade go badly (NT4->Win2k a whole 'nother story.)
you can obtain suse pro free of charge. just do a ftp install [from suse or a local ftp server that you have downloaded the tree to]. or download the iso of the dvd and burn it to disc.
hard to beat free.....til whomever goes out of business because they don't make any money. Someone somewhere needs to pay someone something.
Yeah, because $129 is wayyyyy cheaper than $119.99 [salesintl.com]. Yeah, that's an OEM version. Try comparing the $129 with the retail full box with support package of XP Pro....
...at $129 yet again, but I've got the family pack on pre-order, so amortize the $150 after the Amazon rebate across 4 Macs and it's quite the bargain. They should really provide upgrade pricing, but the $129 list is still wayyyyy cheaper than XP Pro, but twice as expensive as my SUSE 9.2 boxed set.
I might not have went to jail, but I did go to an American middle school. The experiances are not that different.
I've read some stupid things on slashdot (and I've been doing it since the beginning) but that statement ranks in my "top 5 all-time stupid statements. Congratulations.
It's only a short while til the NY Times, The Washington Post and other first-tier newspapers start charging for content. The only issue is which one will be first....
*And what is BitMover so upset about? That anyone would dare compete with them?*
well, didn't the license pretty much lay out that part out to open already? they don't want competition.
and um, yeah, it is a problem for them if someone does for free what they want money for
Oh, bullshit. Competition isn't the issue. Why wasn't that guy building a better vcs than reverse engineering Bitkeeper? It's not anti-competitive to want to keep someone from stealing your ideas (and hard work). Now, if the objection was to a developer building his own from the ground up vcs, you'd have a point. You don't now.

Work for XM, do ya?

But a business does....
...I bet their aluminum foil bed sheets would need to be ironed quite often. :-)
My kingdom for mod points for you.

In some regions, most notably France, culinary habits may pose a denial-of-service (DOS) risk.

...for viruses and spyway to utilize! Woo hoo!!!! A new generation dawneth. :-)
You think it was all "peaceful scientific exploration"? Wanna see a list of weaponry that was developed in those days?
Don't put words in my mouth: I never said that (I'm not naive). However, there was a mixture back then...and there ain't now.
...now all of our science is just to build better weapons systems. Sigh.
...but there are 2 GB chips now.

Seeing as how all Apple computers come with some version of Mac OS - wouldn't you say that this IS upgrade pricing?
:-)
That's a damn good point that never occurred to me. Hope the moderators reward you.

No, what is CRUEL is when an inmate beats you up. What is UNUSUAL is when, after the beating, he kisses you and says "I'm gonna take care of my baby".
Man, that makes me want to puke. A beating then a fucking. YUK!
Sounds like the voice of experience talking....
...I guess to any slashdotter, NO Internet access would be cruel and unusual punishment.

Since when did Firefox advertise the chromosomes of the user? Did I miss an extension or something?
Also, Spam-Research is reporting the SplitFit Technique that Spammers are using to fool Yahoo! Mail SpamGuard."
How much credence should we put into an analysis from a guy who goes to the spammer's web site to unsubscribe?
Did he at least get to screw WorstBuy out of the $114?
