    Don't all those ads saying "Your computer is infected! Clean it now!" (or something like that) and "Windows is running slow! speed it up Blah blah blah bullshit bullshit" fall into this same category?

    I would think so. I like to visit those sites and have those messages appear and "we have scanned you and found...." on my Mac. Yeah, right. You got a bridge to sell me, too.

    Or are they just QoS'ing it down to a dull roar? If VOIP is sucking such a percantage of their pipes that it's affecting their customers in other ways, that, I can't say that I'd blame 'em. Not too much different that universities throttling down P2P....

    I still buy the original, full CDs.

    Amazingly in this digital age, some of us still have CD players. I rip everything I buy - all my music is on my computer and I listen there or on my MP3 player. But I like to have the originals in a lossless, archivable physical format. Not to mention that I still have a CD changer in my car.

    However - the second they start encoding the CDs I buy with "copy protection" that makes it impossible - or a hassle - to rip my CDs, that's probably when I'll switch to buying music online and do something like wiring up an iPod to my car. All DRM will do is kill the brick & mortar retailers.


    And royally piss off the honest people.

    The last "Have to listen to it from start to finish" album I got was ISIS' Panopticon. Then again, looking through my CD collection, there's very little there from the 21st Century....

    The stolen info includes our bank account numbers for those of us who set up funds transfers for our ESP accounts...we are, or we should, be running arond like crazy now, checking credit bureau reports and clamping addtional pass phrases, and putting fraud watches on all our accounts...this sucks in spades and we really don't need MORE publicity just now.

    One key thing pointed out in the article is how many SAICers they haven't been able to get in touch with. To me (I was the submitter), that meant that this info should be disbursed far and wide to alert all of the potential victims. The thieves, presumably, know what they have and know what to do with it.

    As long as it's not company policy ie. each employee that uses it is installing it for personal use, it's free.

    I worked for a company that refused to pay for AV, and we all had it on our desktops, except the managers.

    Alternatively, politely and calmly ask them for their name, and the name of their firm (rather than being aggressive or letting them know what your intentions are). Then file a DNC complaint ASAP.

    I'm on the US DNC and I got a call one time that my Caller ID said was unavailable. The gent with the Indian accept (being in tech it's an accent I'm all too familiar with) said that he was calling from Citibank. "Citibank?" says I, "How can you be calling from Citibank when my caller ID says India?"
    Stunned silence, and it totally threw him off his script. Priceless.

    ]What I use the program for ia a double entry check against the bank. If I enter what I do into it I expect my banl statement balances to match. If it does not, then either I or the bank missed something. I could do this if I just download what the bank thinks I did.

    As for on-line payment, I use my banks on-line facilities using Mozilla as the browser.

    So I never notice nor care if it integrates with my bank.


    And the original complainant's version of Quicken will continue to act exactly the same way. This is much ado about nothing. Quicken is removing phone support (and their Indian outsourced support sucks anyway), and bank downloading.
    I know people who still use Quicken 5 on their Macs because they don't need any of the above features.

    Probably because cmd.exe (and iexplore.exe) are found in C:/windows, and it needs the full path to lauch one in the first place.

    I don't know anything about this subject but I guess that IE doesn't have access to any system variables like %windir% and the code can't do %windir/cmd.exe and thus also exploit Win2k or NT4 with IE 6 installed?

    Distinguish "accepting responsibility" from "letting yourself be at the mercy of the plaintiffs."

    This issues aren't whether he did it or not--they have him nailed cold; nothing he's said will dig him in deeper. This is all extenuation and mitigation in advance of the trial.
    He's not putting himself at Apple's mercy--he's trying to get mercy from Apple. There's a difference.

    He's only an idiot if he's trying to weasel out of it and plead not guilty. By his account, he's accepting responsibility for his actions and thus not an idiot. Hard concept to grasp, I know....

    You're right about that. We've just started getting our first XP boxes (Dell won't sell us Win2k pre-loaded any more), and I was amazed when installing our ancient version of the GroupWise client when an alert popped up. It said that the version of Windows Messaging that shipped with that version of GroupWise wasn't compatible with XP. That alert had a link to Windows help which not only had a full explanation of what was going on, but it had URLs to the Novell knowledge base article covering the topic and a link to the proper download.
    I haven't been so impressed my anything from MS since a Win2k bluescreen actually told me the real reason WHY it crashed and how to fix it.
