Apparently windoze uses thread based scheduling, so a program with more threads gets more priority.. I belive that in most Unixes its process based, depending on the thread package implementation, this may or may not work.
What everyone needs to realize is that this is Financial Data. I worked with a database of over 4GB of nothing but sales orders for Cisco, and that was only for one technology group. This translates to a lot of money, and keeping the integrity, security and performance of these kinds of databases are very, very important and very stressful due to the responsiblility. Also, for financial data, correctness is more important than mondo fast algorithms that add complexity. Divide the 12GB by average value of each record to see how big the database is in business value.
The interview question that I thought was the most fun was:
Given a function bool validWord(string word) write a procedure that takes phone numbers dials as input and returns all of the possible valid words that can be made up all of the possible text sequences for the selected numbers (sort of like text dialing). I got it right with a recursive search.
The people I have run into that are worse than hackers are at big companies. I've seen people purposely mess up others work and disrupt access and such all over grudges or for some power trip just to get people fired. Root cause analysis and auditing helps eliminate these people.
I'd totally agree with this person. The best way is to be straight and direct to the person in the eyes of all, and avoid stupid games, sugar coating, allusions and eupemisims. Unfortunately, no one seems to have the balls to do tell them to their face.
How in the world is it "anticompetitive" if Microsoft refuses to ship Sun's proprietary with their OS? What kind of crap do you think Microsoft ought to be obligated to ship? According to you, is it also "anticompetitive" that Linux has booted Java of its distributions?
Linux ships with many components from many different people. Are you saying that Microsoft's OS should only ship with componenets from Microsoft at their discretion?
Why should M$ alter the java language for "technical reasons?" This would seriously adversley affect developers, despite its "techincal superiority". Remeber that WORM (write once run everywhere) is a core concept in java, hence, proprietary changes break its concept. Microsoft should have worked with sun, not the other way around. Also, why should M$ remove java vm's from their OS and browser? This breaks far more things than it fixes, and is also very anticompetitive in a childish way. Sun embraced their platform by implementing a VM for windows, whey should M$ bar java from windows? Straight chickenshit.
M$ removed java from their os and browser. They also tried to change the Java language by adding the "delegate" keyword. They also created a far faster java compiler and vm, that weren't compatible with sun's. I rember wearing sunglasses at Microsoft with the "SUN" logo, and I didn't hear the end of it. All this is what I call chickenshit.
Cisco Security Agent (which installs trust agent) is one of my favorite programs. It pops up messages when programs attempt to record keystrokes (game emulators do this), access the registry and other suspicious activities. It also tells me that the latest ie is apparently injecting code.
This happen to anyone else with hotmail? Many of my emails around 2004 and before are deleted except for about 10 before that period. I've had a hotmail account since around 1999.
In response to my mod as 100% overrated. I'm perceving this as meaning that theres no "Fun" in linux but "Money" is more important. Once again isn't that against the priciple of free software? I suppose the response is "Making money is fun", but I'd ask, how many people have really have fun making money?
My point was if you have the skill to create solutions for next to nothing (or hire someone), then you'll save, otherwise you'll have to pay. Whats this "WAAA i want everything to work effortlessly" and "WAAA I want more money for free"?
Also, with the PDA, calendar and Quickbooks thing, you are comparing a very low revenue product/solution thats out of the box to an enterprise solution platform for custom development. Apples and Oranges.
The who point of Linux is that you have the source and can fix anything yourself, unless you simply aren't skilled enough to fix it. I've altered the source of drivers, compiled kernels for smaller footprints, altered scripts, updated libs and many other customizations to get linux to work. With windows, if it don't work, you're forced to spend money.
I'm barely over 30 years old, and I've worked in Microsoft, Cisco, Stanford, Juniper and other Major high-tech corporation as a Senior Software Engineer, and I didn't graduate from high school or even offically become matriculated to a University or take an SAT. I did audit many core CS courses at a top school (UC Berkeley) for no credit, and hence would like to think that I know a bit of CS. My opinion is that having Computer Science knowledge (not IT knowledge) is more important than the degree, but having the degree is of course a way of getting there.
I tried that, and they'd simply have the specs updated to introduce bugs and speced out in the most difficult way to implement. Often I'd be blocked with dependencies. Also, I implemented a bunch of items that were scoped out to another milestone and they opened bugs on those items and insisted that I unimplemented them. Mangagement over your group was inaccessable.
Unfortunately, with swing, you are stuck to their weak tool kit and its faults. By the way, can you give me a link to your toolkit? I'd like to check it out.
Its my opinion, having seen inside of Microsoft, that the interal ego maniacs beneath upper management took over the soul of Microsoft. All of my attempts to make the solution better were squashed with internal politics and self centered ness of others as opposed to creating a better product. In comparison to the Silicon Valley, where most of my experience is from, their engineers seemed to be very incompetent and tried to get by with bs and politics instead of skill.
I implemented an app that recorded all of the browsing and events in a frame that generated Javascript to re-play the browsing session to a hidden frame and saved the script via a Java Applet that connected to a Servlet like java program on the server way before XMLHTTPRequest existed. Java Applets can provide even better functionality, but unfortunately no one seems to be able to develop responsive, multithreaded applets in AWT for any browser, hence applets gained the reputation of being sluggish and unresponsive.
What would be a new "Innovation" in game development? With all of the functionality now pushed to chips, is it now in the harware engineer's realm? Perhaps more creative artists and plots. I'd be curious to know just how much other mainline medias such as video and audio communication/content is integrated with games.

I'm a high school drop out with no degree and I interviewed with Google for a sw eng position and may interview again.

They should just simply replace their RAID controllers, rather than investigate.

I thought it said "New Technique for Recycling PHBs".
To my recollection, Linux doesn't run on a 286. Perhaps you meant you cross compiled it on windows?
I guess the next logical step would be a Steam Computer? I wonder if this exists.
