  5. Carmen Sandiego? on Teaching History In Schools With Video Games · · Score: 5, Interesting

Does anyone else remember playing "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?". I loved that game, and I think its probably one of the biggest reasons for my love of history and computers! I can see good high quality video games easily making people love History and Geography! As a side note there were tons of spin offs from the "Carmen Sandiego" series. There was a "Where in Time" and there was even a TV Show/Gameshow!

Aren't people forgetting the social problems? Its like what the mathmatician said in Jurrasic Park: "They were so busy trying to see if they could, they didn't stop and think if they should" (or something to that effect). So if we have a generation (or two) of people living longer, what happens to Social Security? Or housing? Or land prices? Or the environment? Or heck lots and lots of other very limited resources! Would I take one of these pills if it was offered to me for $1k? Damn straight I would, but there are so many issues that I shudder at the effects this will have ~100 years down the road.

  8. Language shouldn't matter! on First Java AP Computer Science Exam Complete · · Score: 5, Insightful

I don't see how the language should matter in these sorts of exams. Personally I rather have the AP test be questions about algorithms, ideas and concepts. Something like:

    1) Write PseudoCode for an AVL Tree
    2) Describe the benefits of a hashtable

    etc...

No coding, just ideas that a smart student can take to any language, whether its Java or C++ or anything else.

  9. Well for my Undergrad on Math And The Computer Science Major · · Score: 1

I went to CalPoly San Luis Obispo (http://www.calpoly.edu/) and Computer Science was in the College of Engineering so we had to take the same Calculus and Physics classes as the other engineers, not to mention tons of theory classes. This on top of the normal programming and general education classes. Did these classes help me to become a better programmer? Definitly, by helping me to expand my critical thinking to include more than just "how to code". I think that any CS person that DOESN'T take at least a few classes of some high level math is just hurting themselves.

  16. Well I gotta agree... on Linux's Achilles Heel Apparently Revealed · · Score: 5, Insightful

So I gotta agree with this guy, Linux does have its share of problems, but its not because Linux is deficient in anyway, its just that there is a different mentality about Linux than Windows. Lets take his sound card example, the manufacturer of the sound card had two choices, support Linux and spend money on potentially smaller market, or save that money and focus entirely on Windows. The company probably hoped that some Linux driver coder would just whip up a driver and save them the hassle. That's the wrong mentality, and until companies see Linux as a financial win, these sorts of problems will exist.

Sigh, I can relate with this guy, I've tried and tried but my DLINK DWL-520 rev e PCI wireless card still doesn't work under Linux.

How would this affect SGI or SUN? Both companies offer comparable machines, and have 20+ years of experience doing high performance computing, clustering and filesystems. Check out Solaris10 (http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris/10/). With features like DTrace, NFS v4, a highperformance TCP/IP stack and other enterprise level features Apple has a long way to go to compete.

And even barring those problems, wouldn't GPS just plain be easier? Take the same concept, have the phone grab its GPS location, have you enter the address you want to go, and both pieces of information are sent and the phone gets its route to get you where you want to go (with associated fee). Seems cool, though.
