Wow, it seems like I've been hearing stories about DNF all my life, and now suddenly it's really coming out! It's like the end of an era.

I like the Kindle a lot but indeed, e-books for the Kindle are way too expensive. I once bought an e-book from Amazon for 2 US$ more than the paper version, and found out that the figures were left out! There is absolutely no excuse for that. Never again will I buy an e-book from Amazon.

You conventiently ignored the rest of my comment. Luckily you haven't set any standards, even after the war, because Europe and the rest of the world soon went their own ways again. Hell, even your scientists use SI units now, to keep on par with the rest of the world. Yes, we were very grateful when you freed us from Hitler, but lately the US have turned into arrogant bastards and terrorists, and you will have to worry soon about the rest of the world blindly following your policies.

Exactly. I often have a hard time getting people to realize that the citric acid found in citrus fruits is the same chemical they make in factories. Most people think the molecules made in the factory are poisonous because they are 'chemical' while the ones from the fruit are 'biological.' I then point out that many 'bio' substances are extremely poisones. That often makes them see the light.

  25. No flamebait on Why Science Is a Lousy Career Choice · · Score: 2

This post is not a flamebait but the truth. Not only in America but also in most of Europe you have to be crazy to become a scientist. I know 'cause I am one. The changes of making a career beyond the job of Post-Doc are tiny, which means getting a fixed position at a university is out of the question. Our government wants the Netherlands to be in the top five of the best research conducted in the world, and in order to reach that goal has thought it wise to has rip at least 300 M€ from the science budget. All universities now have to lose personnel. This means not only do you never know where your next job comes from, but there is also a small chance that you get fired during a research project. If I were a student now I would really think twice before starting a scientific career.
