    2. national security. there is no fscking warranty that the NSA does not have a Win backdoor *and* the latest Iraq thing showed that to have Yank troops in your door you don't really have to have wmds and stuff
    3. security. meaning backdoors, viruses, trojans, you name it
    4. another aspect of cost: development (of new -- needed -- features etc) can be done IN-country, as opposed to in Redmond
    5. no vendor lock-in
    6. no format lock-in
    7. yeat another aspect of cost: even if money exchange hands, it normally stays in the country
    8. quality. Free Software is on par with -- and many times better than -- proprietary software nowadays, so there is no _need_ of proprietary software anymore

    Hmmm... slackware 1996 (with X, FVWM, etc...) vs Win98. Slackware wins big, feature-wise.
    MacOS probably does, also.
    You are wrong, you know. By 1996, a slackware could do everything WinNT 4 could not, *and* run X+fvwm95, presenting a somewhat similar interface. Ok, the daemons were more difficult to configure, but that's it. I worked at a ISP at that time and I can say to you: it was WAAY easy to drop a NT4 machine off the net (remember the ping-of-death thing? i had to disable all icmp in our Sisco router because of it)

    Ok, my experience with Europe is not pan-European (Spain, Portugal, France, Autria) but, despite my looks -- slightly dark complexion, a mix of typical Italo-american and Arab, not very tall, dark hair, light brown eyes --, I was well treated in all of these countries, with no problem at all. And I lived in Spain for a year, but there I was at home -- almost every Spaniard guy I knew looked just like me :-)

    Point in case: me.

    My grand-grandparents are of the following origins: Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, South American Native, Black, Middle Eastern (Nobody [currently alive] knows if she was Jew or Arab), and Oriental.

    How can I be a bigot? Whatever your race is, I certainly can feel related. Many Brazilians are in the same condition as I am, maybe I am more conscious (having done some extensive genealogic research) of my multi-ethnicity. When filling forms with "race/ethnicity", I usually seek for the "all of the above" option... :-)

    But USofAns, more than European people, apparently segregate much more deeply, by race, by religion, etc. They don't seem to intermarry as commonly as down here.

    What appalled me in your link was the fact that this woman *is* in fact intermarried with a white guy and she fears and have nightmares with black folks. This is a sign IMHO that *she* has serious problems.

    Yes. The plain text SMTP mail client in your phone may be infected by a virus-type code injection via a buffer overflow. The Bluetooth stack (if existing) can be infected this way too, and security flaws can be exploited from 50m (150ft) away, using a properly shaped antenna.

    I lived for a year in sunny Madrid.

    And I took some weeks to get used to their -15C winter.

    But you really have to take in consideration my clothing today [very cold (to us) winter day: 8C (47F) min, 23C (73F) max. -- current temperature]. I left my home at 07:45am, wearing black pants, t-shirt, and a Hard Rock Cafe sweater(*) (which I got off by 3pm).

    When I was in Madrid's winter, I had three to four kilos of wool clothing on to go out...
    And, no, 18C (65F) is cold to me. I would have to put my sweater back on. 23C (73F, the temperature right now (5pm)) is comfortable in my t-shirts.

    (*) is this the right name of this clothing piece?

    Just so you know, more than half the world's population live in places like I do (Belo Horizonte, SE Brasil) where THE FUCKING ROOM TEMPERATURE IS COMPATIBLE WITH HUMAN LIFE ALL YEAR LONG -- that is, between 12C and 35C normally (50-100F?), ranging in extremis from 0C to 45C (30-120F). This includes most of India, large portions of Africa, most of South America, large parts of East Asia, Middle East, large parts of Oceania...

    You deserved the flamebait moderation.

    Now, even for that kind of places (as I said in other post) car windows would be great with this glass...

    Where I live (Belo Horizonte, southwestern Brasil) 84F (29C) is room temperature 9 out of the 12 months of the year. In the northern states, it's 11/12. We usually only turn our ACs on at home when it's 37C (100F) and above.

    Notwithstanding, this is _great_ (if the yellow tint and the toxicity when broken issues are solved) for car windows. AC won't kick in as often (less gas spent), seats/steering wheel won't get ultra-hot when the vehicle is left under the sun (the beach!!), baby-left-in-the-car dehidration deaths won't happen.

    Slightly longer answer: yes, if it is 2- or 3-clause BSD; 4-clause BSD code must have exemption from all copyright-owners-GPL-licensors to be used.

    The opposite is not true - period. If all copyright owners relicense their software under BSD license, then it can be used in BSD'd code.

    1(a). this means: apt-get upgrade if and only if there is a serious vulnerability; optionally, once a week, preferably once a month.
    2. USE apt-listbugs.
    2(a). this means: READ the fscking bugs. take a special look in those marked by apt-listbugs with , but DO read all of them. in any apt-get dist-upgrade, I get at most 30 bugs.
    3. USE apt-listchanges.
    3(a). yes, you know the drill. READ the changes. SEARCH for changed functionality, especially in packages you tinkered with the config.

    1+2+3 == NEVER breaking the machine.
