  1. Stress on Appreciating Your Stressful IT Job? · · Score: 1

In some ways I was more stressed before I got my programming job then I am now. Yes there is stress meeting deadlines and such, but I think it's all in how you look at it.

I find that by working the standard 40 and then going home I look forward to both going home and going to work. I guess I hit a good balance, which is nice. Overtime is always nice to, but in moderation. Constant overtime can be more harmful then helpful I think.

Either way, it's all in how satisfied you are at the end of the day I guess, atleast for me. I'd say if your thinking of factory work get in with a good union. After 3 and 1/2 years at a boiler factory before getting a job in my field I realize unions are the way to go for that kind of work.

Finally if you just want to blow off some steam, fire up Quake, UT, or something and go Noob hunting. Nothing takes care of stress like a few easy frags. ;)

My first car was a late model '76 Chevy Malabu Classic (LEAD SLED), puke green, rusted dent in the right rear from a truck smacking it at 40mph. I got that car for $900 of news paper delivery money and it lasted me from about 1987/88 to about 2003 with heavy milage for a college student traveling from Lancaster PA to Harrisburg PA each day along with work and other things.

What finally killed it was inspection.. Seems that two weeks before we had a huge rainstorm that flooded everywhere and I was driving friends home. I was traveling flooded back roads and the car went in to water that was high enough to seep in through the floor. Bottomed it out like twice, ah it was great.. Got them home and drove myself home.

Anyhow the inspection revealed that I broke the rear axel and smashed the transmition housing. Yet it still drove like nothing was wrong. Atleast to me anyway. :) God forbid I ever do anything like that with my current 2003 Saturn Ion. It'd be totaled probebly on the first hill I would hit or short out from high water.

Granted the car I have now is nice compared to the old one, but I know what I would a)feel safer in and b)know which was less complicated to fix on my own if I had to.

  9. Someone cares... on Comcast Cuts Infected PCs' Network Connections · · Score: 2, Interesting

Nice to see some companies caring about their customers by notifying them there's a problem. I wish Sprint/Earthlink was as good as Comcast in the customer service, hell the one tech guy who came out to work on our line even recomended Comcast over his company. oO

Here's a little story about Sprint/Earthlink you may all enjoy. Last year at around Febuary. They got a hold of my home and said that DSL was available. We signed up and they called a month later saying the 1.5 DSL was available so we signed up for that.

Well for 7 months we had no problems. Everything worked perfectly. Then they decided that individual computers at a home must now go through a router and switched the system over to that. This caused regular disconnects at my house because they neglected to send us any notification of the service change.

After the router was installed and we went through it, we still got regular disconnects from the service. After about 3 month, 3 Sprint technicians, and 1 Earthlink tecnician.

Finally the conclusion was reached that the 1.5 DSL was the problem cause we were about 24,000 feet from the office or just outside the bubble. And we could only get the lower speed. Which doesn't explain why it worked for 7 months w/out a hitch before their connection policy change.

We asked if it was possible to be switched to a closer office, they said there was one closer but it wasn't ready to handle connections. We asked if they could notify us of when it will be ready so we can switch and have better service. The technician said they wouldn't and no reason was given.

At this point your probebly wondering why we didn't switch to Comcast. Well they neglected to send us a bill for about 3 months and repeated calls were getting nowhere so switching was on hold. A carrier pigeon would have been more of an option.

Finally in Febuary another Sprint tecnician came out. This guy knew exactly what he was doing and said that the office closer to use was ready to take connections after he heard our story. He hooked us right up to the closer office thats only 10,000ft away and we've been picture perfect since. I'd like to thank that fellow, but I didn't get his name cause I was at work when he stopped out.

Anyway, it's fellows like that and the ones that take the time to call people about problems that should get the good pay checks. Not the idiots who could careless and leave you hanging.

Sorry for the long winded story. But seeing this article made me think of what happened to me and especially of that one tech guy recomending Comcast over their company.

No pun, I've been in There and it's amazing to me. I personally like hoverboarding over the 3D landscape they got going there which is nice how it blends from one type to another. You could be atop of a clear hill and pretty much land surf down in to a valley thats not so bright and heavly forested.

The tricks you can do on a hoverboard are fun. Nothing like about 8 backflips as you fly off the rim of a valcano down to the valley floor on a hover board. Or using small mounds of dirt or small hills to get some nice huge air time. :P

At first the transitions seemed slightly odd but after reading the article and seeing how different areas are handled from different servers it makes sense and now I think it's nicely done given the challenge of keeping things in sync between multiple servers.

The paingun battles are fun and cute but definatly not up to Quake or UT feel. They're still fun to pelt someone from the top of a mountain with a well placed shot and watch them fly across the valley floor. No scope or zoom so you have to have skill. ;)

The only thing I really feel disappointed on in There is the fact that the water is as solid as the land. I can litterly dune buggy across the bay to the next island or walk like on dry land. That was a big disappointment for me, but the other aspects of it don't let it dwell on my mind long.

They recently launched 2.0 of There and from what I can tell you can play various card games now in a social setting. There is a few other things they added as well, have to check out their site for it. www.there.com

Overall I feel like I'm in a big cartoon more then a video game. Which I think is neat. One thing I have to wonder about is their ability to hold on to name "There" especially with the Windows trade mark up in court right now. I don't know what kind of hold the company that runs There has on the term "There" but thats a little aside thought I had recently.

I had a good base of players too, not near as much as some places but a good base. Since then I've worked on about 4 other module designs of my own including an arena one for the PVP section.

I'd say the scripting language and the flexability to created hundreds of possible paths for a module are it's greatest power over all the other editors out there. It's also relativly easy to use, the only thing is you don't get a nice print bound manual for the scripting though the script editor in there has a nice help reference side bar. It's also really nice to be able to script in counter measures for cheaters.
