Honestly just go to a store when you get there.. The good ones are unfortunately san-man en ijou.. I didn't have 30,000 yen available for spending, so I had to make do without. Most of the japanese people I knew went to the same uni (kansai gaikoku go daigaku) and were studying english, so they had varying qualities of denshi jishou on them at most times. They laughed when I pulled out my paper dictionaries, but sometimes I beat them at finding the proper definitions, jsut because they had a hard time spelling the english words ;)

Any proper education methods should have ingrained in you the radicals and proper concepts of stroke order such that you should be able to copy any kanji by halfway through second year of uni. I know most people were doing it properly with characters that they saw only already assembled after their first semester. That being said, while I draw my kanji correctly, my hiragana and katakana orders are always messed up ;)

Odd, I never noticed it, but it's rather true. Interesting how cabinets are more sophisticated in Japan (networked play for several games, like the gundam game that's rather popular over there) tends to draw people to the game centers [arcades]. But yeah, I tried to think of games at the american arcades and did only see ones that couldn't be played at home (gun based shooters, bemani games, golf, etc.).

That being said, DDR is great, and for 50c I can get 5 songs out of the machine at my local arcade. Much cheaper than anywhere else, and more enjoyable than playing at home (you get the fact that you're performing in front of people, plus the pads are usually much better quality.)

The cost of the second choice is prohibitive, for the likelihood that you'd actually be subpoena'd for that information.

The likelihood of the first happening is quite low as well. Certain institutions will, of course, do this. Libraries are a good example of ones that have and will. But if I'm Big Company X, what benefit is it to me to risk ANYTHING by collecting LESS information? More information on customers == good for most businesses, they can tailor their advertising, products, etc. Aggregate numbers don't always work for these purposes. Why would they care if the government gets a copy of their oracle database of customer info, as long as it's not the same one that has their plans to take over the world?

I agree with the other statement, but the analogy is flawed. There's no clear better choice in the bipartisan system, since they're basically either the exact same (corrupt), or the exact opposite (because they're not the other party, which is evil).

I wish you'd not posted AC, so I could hope to get a response, but ignoring that..

I said most 'artists' now sound so much different/'better' because of the studio work after they're done recording. Not all, but a lot. Why wouldn't they though? What makes the concerts go beyond what they can capture in a studio? If they played covers at live shows, that's one thing.. if they rehash what is already on a cd, I don't necessarily see why it would sound better then, when they otherwise get multiple chances to do it right, and editing equipment to fix the parts they didn't.

You could always argue that the mistakes/human quality of the live shows might make it better, and I'll give you that.

I'll ignore 2, I dunno why I figured mic recording, mostly because that's what I've seen around on the internet. They had some decent stuff, but it was still just someone in the crowd, I think.

    3) why are those better than just the individual studio songs? Not seeing the benefit of chances to mess up and not correct yourself.. You could claim they did it perfectly, but then.. why not just have put THAT on the original album instead?

Yeah, cuz I want to listen to a mic recording of a live performance without the benefit of any post production studio work. Live shows are good beacuse they're LIVE. I can maybe see listening to one I went to, or if they significantly change the shows or something, but if all they do is play songs you can get on the cd, what's the point of getting a mic rip of them not doing their 'best' (read: most edited, in the case of most 'artists') at it?

I'll admit I know nothing of the production of silicon wafers, but it doesn't seem like it'd be harder to get square ones than round ones, or that it'd be impossible to make round ones, chop off the edges to make it square, ship that to AMD, and then melt the edges down in to another wafer.

    And hence, I ask.

It proves that the data fed in to it (from hundreds of sources) and the (several) programmers are better at logically defeating a game than ONE person is. I'm amazed he won two games, this says far more about him than it does about anything else.

What exactly are these contests trying to prove anyway? When the computers gain a clear victory over the humans, what have we learned?

A couple physical problems with them (the main control knob doesn't work properly.. it changes settings inbetween clicks of the knob, so I have to get it in jsut the right spot.. and the headphone jack on the left is slightly borked so that I only get one channel most of the time), but as far as sound quality.. they're quite nice. Dolby digital input too, which I like.

There's also the benefit of being smaller, easier to carry/store, and being able to play them on my computer. A lot of people don't like the last, but as a college student, I much rather prefer to have a dvd drive in my computer than need a separate box that'll plug in to my tv card (in my computer) that just sits around most of the time. Space is a premium in this one room that I can call my own. I don't own a tv because of it, there's no room (and no need on spending the extra money, in my mind. DVD drive: $30. Decent set-top player: $100+. Decent TV adds on to that. TV card + dvd drive: much cheaper (since I already have the computer anyway, the cost of the other parts needed dont come in to play)

We'll ignore the fact that my speakers are also better by far than 95% of the ones I've seen people use for 'home entertainment' systems. Digital convergence is nice at times.
