this is what is causing the interference, "[W]hen a photon passes through one of four slits, some shadow photons pass through the other three slits." The shadow protons, then, are blocking the tangible protons, causing only three shadow slits.
These shadow protons form a parallel universe.
I'm reminded of a Star Trek: TNG episode where Data went down to some planet to collect radioactive rocks. Somehow he short circuited (or whatever - I'm not much of a Star Trek fan) and "forgot" who he was and ended up in this small village full of people that were several centuries behind the human race.
While in this village, Data sat at a table listening to a teacher explain to her student what the various forms of matter were. In one of her explanations (and you star trek geeks will have to forgive me if I'm getting the details wrong here) but she said that fire was "inside" of wood and that it could only be released by heating it up... Data interjected and said that he felt like her conclusion had to be wrong for such and such reason. And throughout the episode he demonstrates a couple of other (obvious to us) things that these unevolved people are confused about.
My point is - this guy's explanation sounds like a conclusion drawn from a limited understanding of how things really are. But IANAQP (I am not a quantum physicist)... so what do I know? Maybe it does make sense... but Parallel Universes? I don't know.. sounds like he's reaching for an answer to explain the unobservable. Given time, this ?theory? of his will be proven wrong. You know how it is... the world is flat, the sound barrier can never be broken, 640k is enough for anything, etc...
How is someone ever going to find seven shows they want to watch at once in general
Sometimes there probably are actually seven things on at the same time that I want to see. Fox News, Discovery, TLC, TechTV, Sci-Fi and/or Comedy Central, local news, and the Discovery Science channel.... but the real problem is finding the time to actually go back and watch all those shows.
I only have 2 tuners on my PVR that I have now and I find myself going through and deleting unwatched shows a couple of times per week.
1) Havn't you heard of menu items? 2) Havn't you heard of shell scripts? 3) If you are supporting your mom and she doesn't have a network connection and vncserver running on her machine you are stupid:}
Yeah - you are right. Silly me. All of that is so much easier than the hardware simply suspending to RAM when the lid is closed as part of the Laptop's default behavior.
"OK - Mom... now I'm going to upload a shell script to your machine via secure ftp. I need you to make sure the ssh daemon is running on your machine. And I need to forward port 22 on your router to your computer. And I need a userid on your system, or I need you to give me your userid and password."... 5 hours later...
"Nevermind mom,... I'm flying out there to visit you next August, it will be faster for me to just write the shell script for you when I get there."
You will be happy to know that the acpi-problem with the nforce2 chipset has been solved in Kernel 2.6.6. NVidia disclosed the info about what goes wrong and it is in the kernel now.
Very cool... I was not aware of that. I've been checking the changelog for every new kernel, including the 2.6.6 kernel, and I've yet to see where this issue was addressed. But I'll take your word for it and give the 2.6.6 kernel a try on my ASUS nForce2 board later today when I get some time.
I use "echo 3 >/proc/acpi/sleep" to put it to sleep
Is that a requirement?
I can just hear myself on the phone with my mom "OK... click on your K menu, go to system, tools, now click on Konsole. Now type "su" and hit enter. Now type your root password. No, your *root* password, not your user password. Of course I don't know what *your* root password is.".... an hour later... "OK now type echo, that's e like edward, c like cat, h like house, o like oliver. Now press the space bar, now type the number 3, now press space again, now type the greater than sign. Hold down shift and press the period key. Now press space again. Now forward slash. That's the one on the same key as the question mark. Now type proc. That's p like postal, r like romeo, o like oliver, c like cat. Now type another forward slash, again that's the one with the question mark. No mom, no space. Now type acpi. That's a like apple, c like cat, p like postal, i like illusion. Now type another forward slash. No mom, no space. Now type sleep. That's s like scott, l like linda, e like edward, e like edward - yes mom - 2 e's, p like postal. Now press enter."..... "OK. You must have made a typo. Let's try again..."
... if I could just get the back light to shut off with my Sony Vaio under Linux. Suspend to disk/RAM is a pipe dream for me at this point. After much google'ing, I've come to the conclusion that I'm just screwed - my laptop just simply isn't "linux friendly". I seriously think I'm just going to buy an iBook for my next laptop. The 12" model really isn't all that terribly expensive for a Laptop (let alone for a Mac).
Mandrake 10.0 kernels (2.6 or 2.4) support nForce ethernet without problems, the driver is called forcedeth. And, oh, it is present in vanilla kernels too.
I wasn't the original poster on this - but I'll reply anyway.
That is interesting about the forcedeth module. I didn't even know it existed until you posted this. (In the past, I had downloaded the nForce drivers from NVidia to get my second NIC working.)
I wonder why MDK 10.0 only shows me my onboard 3com card by default? I assume I can probably add forcedeth to my/etc/modprobe.conf file - but I didn't have to do that for my 3com card.
Apparently, the 2.6.5 (and perhaps other) kernels trigger a bit of an nForce2 chipset problem; I needed to need to turn of APIC and Local APIC for them to work reliably at their rated speed.
By reliably, do you mean "for them to work at all"? Of the distro I've installed on this machine (as well as FreeBSD), I can't get it to even install unless I specify "noapic nolapic". There's also a "noioapic" option, but I don't appear to need that.
Once it's installed, I leave "noapic nolapic" in my lilo.conf or else my system will hard lock after 5 or 10 minutes. (Took me quite a while to figure out what was causing the hard lock. But now it's perfectly stable. But I wonder, what am I "missing" with APIC shut off?)
The 4 rules of karmawhoredom: 1. Write a joke and then write "It's Funny, Laugh!". 2. Post an unrelated comment high up in a discussion so everyone will see it and moderate it up. 3. Write "MOD UP" as AC after posting. 4. Ask a question that is explained in the article (guess why this is in bold).
I run Win4Lin for my windows "needs". Unfortunately Win4Lin doesn't allow me to access my firewire ports. So I could use this guy's method... fire up Windows under Win4Lin, download and run the setup.exe to get the updater.exe, then shutdown Win4Lin and hexedit the ~/win/Program Files/(Whatever)
Though more likely I will just wait until I reboot into my real Windows session (whenever that will be) and update it from there. I have reservations about this guy's method... it may be perfectly safe, but I lack the expertise to know for certain.
Waste runs under wine, but there are a lot of annoying issues, and the port seems dead in the water.
I bought Win4Lin... and WASTE was one of my motivating reasons for buying it. If WASTE is important enough to you, I'd recommend Win4Lin. And you get the addeded benefit of being able to do other Windows things. (Kaaza [though giFT works well enough for me most of the time], and whatever other Windows things you need.) The only "problem" with Win4Lin is that at this point in time it's Win95/98/98SE/ME only. However - if your programs will operate under Win98SE (WASTE will), then it's actually an advantage due to lower resource requirements.
I downloaded this PadLockSL but I'm not really impressed with it. The GUI looks "broken" in several places. Text doesn't line up correctly over the buttons and things of that nature. And it doesn't connect with our WASTE network anyway.
I am not a parent... and I never plan to be... but God help me - if I ever have a kid, I pray I don't go around boring the heck out of other people with stories about my kid.
Am I the only one with a Nforce2/Intel8x0 soundcar who cannot change the volume and must use OSS emulation for all applications since direct alsa doesn't work ? (2.6.3 kernel)
I have to use OSS instead of ALSA because my Line-In quits working with ALSA.
But for those who like to take their entire collection of books with them (sort of a book iPOD) this might a neat device.
That is a big selling point for me. Not so much the ability to take my entire book collection wherever I go, but just being able to keep my enitre book collection in a small place. About 2 weeks ago I bought 2 big plastic tubs and filled them up with books so I could store them in my attic because they were taking up too much space.
The biggest question in my mind, is just how much support are publishers going to give this thing? Judging from ebook platforms of the recent past, probably not much.
Right... I was wondering the same thing. I was real interested in eBooks several years ago when I first started reading and hearing about them. But unless you wanted to read some pretty obscure stuff, it wasn't useful.
I agree with this article. Sort of. The part where he says good products are worth paying for. I reluctantly paid $69 so I could make a last ditch effort at running a couple of Windows only programs without dual booting. (And my experience with WINE has been nothing short of a nightmare.) I made sure my system met the requirements for Win4Lin and then paid for it, downloaded it, and installed.
Very uneventful, it just worked. My "test" system (Mandrake 9.2) had a kernel premade so the installation was a breeze. Once I was happy with it - and in compliance with the license - I deleted Win4Lin off the test system and brought it over to main system. I knew it would be a bit more work on this system because I'm running my own kernel. But the kernel patches were as easy as any other kernel patch. Recompile, reboot, install Win4Lin - done.
(Of course someone is going to reply and say Win4Lin didn't work for them, destroyed their machine, set their house on fire, broke up their marriage, caused the death of their only child, inflated Microsoft's market share even more, etc...)
It's not Open Source, but it works. And unfortunately I'm not 15 years old any more so I can't sit around in my parents basement for days at a time screwing with a program just to make it work. My sense of idealism was hit with a hard slap of realism when I turned about 19 or 20. My time away from my computer is quite valuable these days. I'll happily pay a reasonable price for a program that works like it's supposed to. I would prefer to donate money to Open Source projects who give away their software free of charge, but... again... realism.
More importantly, what does "Community" mean in this Mandrake release? Is this a pre 10.0 release of some sort - made available to everyone for testing? Will there be a new 10.0 final after this made available only to club members for the first X number of weeks (like 9.2 was). I remember seeing that 10.0 Community as available only to club members just last week.
I am seriously considering doing just that. Though I am wondering if it will improve the graphics so they look as good as they do under Windows, or if it would just increase my frame rate. Even though the latter would still make it worth the switch.
Also - I'm wondering what kind of dual head support NVidia cards have. I'm using both the DVI and VGA on my Radeon 9800 Pro. Unfortunately the "big desktop" configuration makes it so that when I maximize a Window, it maximizes across both screens. And when I open a new Window, it will almost always open right between the two screens and the first thing I'll have to do is reposition the new window. It's quite annoying.
Finally... what video card would you recommend as an equal to or greater than replacement for a Radeon 9800 Pro w/ 256MB? (I said 128MB in my previous message by mistake. I know 256MB is a waste at this point, but I got such a good deal on it I didn't see any reason to pass it up.)
really, do most people speak english ?
Sí, Oui, Ja, Sim, ,
Me, I'm a Christian, and I don't buy that. I don't believe that Christ is the only avenue to God and salvation.
