You're doing something wrong if you're buying an eBook/game/whatever for it's bits.
True, but an eBook/game/whatever without bits is like a paperback book without the paper. I have to assume that if you're buying information, entertainment or something else and you're not getting the bits or other medium of transmission to go with it, you'd also like to purchase a bridge I own over the Atlantic... It's invisible, but you can drive on it, trust me.
I glad you'll pay, you deserve to. Enjoy paying high prices for a bunch of bits you can't transfer to anyone else, oh and also enjoy paying for the method used to deliver those bits to you, oh and enjoy paying for the storage space for those bits... I wonder what the publisher is paying for? Sounds to me like you've been had.
I won't accept their estimates based on A) they don't believe their estimates are correct
and with good reason, it’s a very rough estimate and the measurements are flawed.
and B) I don't agree with their methods, there are way too many uncontrolled variables and assumptions being made in order to claim a high rate. I don't doubt piracy exist, I just think companies are "playing it up" to get what they want (guilt people into buying products instead of pirating something they probably wouldn't have bought anyway, get more government regulation on their side, etc..).
You're still wrong and you've still only reinforced my point.
I personally agree with you... somewhat. Plastic bags are useful form more then carrying groceries home. We use them to clear our cats litter, tying up paper and the work in our kitchen garbage can just as well as the garbage bags you have to pay for. The issue with plastic bags is people are careless with them; they end up getting blown all over the place and are a hazard to animals. Up to a year ago grocery bags were free around here. now you're expected to use reusable canvas bags or pay $0.05 per bag. Grocery stores are publicizing this as them doing their part for the environment when really it's just a way for them to make more money.
I think the real issue is we've gone from one extreme (not caring about the environment at all or not enough) to the other (you can't breath without someone accusing you of creating harmful carbon emissions).
I'm all for helping the environment so I do what I can when I can, but when politicians and companies start forcing ME to be more environmentally friendly and then turn around and claim THEY did all the work, I get a little irked. What's worse is in order to maintain public image they have to constantly push the envelope and come up with new ways of forcing us to do more for less so they can claim they've done something.
I kind of wish people weren't so sheepish (including me) so I could see the garbage pile up in the street. I don't see why I have to pay taxes for services such as garbage and recycling pickup, then I have to do all the rinsing, sorting and packaging of the garbage so that someone else will do what their paid to do and pick the stuff up.
So what happens if you throw a party and end up with lots more garbage than normal?
I take it to an apartment building and illegally throw it in to one of their dumpsters since apartment buildings hire private contractors to remove garbage instead of the city doing it. They have no way of knowing who throws what away so the rules are unenforceable for people living in apartment buildings. If I was to get caught I'd have to pay a $400 fine, but compared to what I would spend on gas to drive out of the city to the land fill plus what I'd have to pay to get ride of the garbage, I'm saving money in the long run...
Not that I do that sort of thing a lot. The rules are really only hard to follow if my wife and I are out of town on garbage/recycling day (Saturday for us). We've both taken a Friday off before to go visit her parents and could have, but didn't, put our recycling out on Thursday instead (we were worried about animals getting in to it, the pick up people won't take it if it's spread all over the street).
What you're suppose to do is take it to the landfill yourself and pay to have it accepted
Just as a side note something I've been reading about that the city is thinking of implementing is selling "bag tags". Basically you buy the "bag tags" (Bar-code stickers) from the city to put on your garbage bags. Supposedly you can throw away as much as you want as long as you have enough "bag tags". I'm pretty opposed to the idea since we already pay taxes for garbage collection plus our home is pretty much a pre-recycling/waste disposal centre as it is. This just seems more like a scam to grab up more money while providing no more or less service. Besides *Reaching for the tinfoil hat* I don't want the city to track what I throw away. How can I be sure the bar-code isn't used to track where the bags were collected from? what if someone uses one of my garbage bags to get ride of their collection of child porn before or after the bag has been picked up? Before you know it the cops will be banging on my door because some junky threw his used needles in my garbage.
I apoligize I only read down to the line after the first section and didn't notice the "UPDATE" section. However
a lot of smart people have been questioning the accuracy of our 90% estimate, and with good reason, it’s a very rough estimate and the measurements are flawed.
Sounds like they still agree with me. This is one of the easiest arguments I've ever had, I have to commend you on finding and pointing out all the great resources that support my argument. The argument being:
I still don't see how they can come up with this rate of 90%, it has to be an estimate there is no way to 100% know how many pirated copies are out there or being played.
My subscription was $25/mo before I canceled it. The paper delivery person couldn't get the paper to my house before I left at 7:00 AM to go to work. By the time I'd get home all the paper was good for is to start a fire. My city has regulations on how much garbage and recycling you can put out in a given week. Garbage is one week (3 Clear bags of garbage and 1 non-see through black bag for "feminine" products, and other stuff you don't what your neighbors to see), recycling (4 clear blue bags) and compost (large green bin, only for food products no leaves, cardboard or paper) the next week. If we missed a recycling week we would accumulate a months worth of news papers combined with the other cardboard, non-refundable cans and bottles and other packaging. if we put that much out we'd get a red sticker and the city wouldn't take anything which only compounded the issue.
As they point out on the linked page. This method wouldn't account for multiple ligit copies of games being played behind a router using NAT, or dynamic IP address, possibly a combination. It also doesn't account for people who might have unchecked the box. It also wouldn't account for if I installed the game on my laptop and traveled from my home to my parents, in laws, cousins, friends place, which would make the piracy rate seem much much higher. They assume it would balance out, but it is IMHO a very inaccurate estimate and proves nothing.
Carmel recounted seeing torrents with upwards of "500 seeders and 300 leechers" and receiving emails from some who bought the title after pirating it, but flat-out said that "the piracy rate was about 90" percent. "We're doing ok, though," Carmel said in stride. "We're getting good sales through WiiWare, Steam, and our website. Not going bankrupt just yet."
Seems to be they don't mind too much and openly admit that piracy makes up a portion of the people who eventually bought the game. I still don't see how they can come up with this rate of 90%, it has to be an estimate there is no way to 100% know how many pirated copies are out there or being played. People could be downloading the game to try it and saying Not for me, others go out and but it. I'd bet the way they come up with 90% is by saying "Ok, we should sell 10000 copies of the game", then X time frame later they say we only sold 1000 copies, there must be 9000 pirated copies out there that's a 90% piracy rate.
I find the funny thing is I have a bunch of Nintendo & Super Nintendo games and quite a few PS1 and PS2 games. I've owned my PS3 since the week after it was released, but I only own two games for it. Little Big Planet (My wife wanted) and Folklore. I love my PS3 because of all the other things I can do with it besides play games. I'm not a first person shooter, racing, or sports game person. One of the things I've always thought the Play Stations were good for were their RPGs, but there haven't been any besides Folklore up to this year (FF 13 and White Knight Chronicles) that I've even remotely wanted to buy.
All the PS1 and PS2 games I own. I'd be pissed if I bought one of the new PS3s that wouldn't let me play them. When they do eventually come out with a PS4 unless it's backward compatible with all three systems Sony can bit me.
I don't want anyone to get me wrong. I've used Steam before and I did like it. I haven't used my account for probably almost a year. I have a habit of playing a game for awhile, not touching it for a very long time, then pulling it out again and enjoying it.
So how long will my steam account remain active?
Just last week I started a game of Dragon Worrier for the Nintendo, first game I ever owned and I haven't played it for going on 15 years at least. Will steam keep games I've bought that long?
I'm not worried about the amount of money I spend on games, what I'm concerned with is will I be able to play those games in the many years to come and eventually share them with my kids? Most of the crap that's coming out today I won't be able to. I find a lot of stuff has DLC after you buy the game. If I owned Fallout 3 (a game I hear has lots of pay for DLC) in 20 years will I be able to get the DLC I've previously paid for back... Probably not. That's how I view services like Steam, but only time will tell if I'm correct, so...
Let me know in 20 years how all those Steam games are working and what you can play them on
I own a Nintendo, Super Nintendo and tons of games I loved when I was a kid. I still play with my Nintendo and Super Nintendo, which still work almost 25 years later. When the systems eventually don't work anymore, I have Emulators and ROMs for all my games that let me play the games on my laptop and PS3 (with Linux installed on it). Let me know in 20 years how all those Steam games are working and what you can play them on. Should be interesting.

Jokes aside, I do agree with you about the need to stop being paranoid and the need start to get on with life.
I'm sure I could buy a new VCR at the local Walmart for $10 or less. But 1) I'm lazy and 2) I don't see the point in buying a cheaply made obsolete gadget, which I'll probably have to pay to get rid of when it likely breaks down in the next 5-10 years putting me right back where I started.
I will openly admit DVDs are better then VHS tapes, but I don't see much more utility in Blu-Ray disks. I've been told that if I bought something bigger then the 36" TV I only bought two years ago, I'd probably notice a difference. I'm happy with DVDs, but I'm going to be forced to buy into the next great thing when DVD/Blu-Ray players eventually go the way of the VCR because people can buy movies that can be bought and accessed anywhere from a central server. Then something else will come out and that will be obsolete. I really feel like a major defeatist.
Sarcasm aside, the world has always been a crazy place, and to say that kids today have to deal with terrorism and all that is really no different from past generations.
not really what I'm saying, I wasn't clear. It's not that kids have to deal with craziness past generations didn't have to, it's that they hear more about the craziness and it seems much closer. I remember during 9/11 standing in line at Canadian Tire while the planes were flying into the trade centers. I thought it was a movie trailer until I got home and my neighbor pulled me aside. If that sort of thing had of happened when my Dad was my age he might not have herd of it at all, but I can't say for sure because 1) that was a pretty big event and 2) I didn't grow up in that time. I commonly hear the phase "Are things really getting worse in the world, or do we just hear more about the bad things?"
Maybe you should have read his post a little closer. Personally I'd consider Cancer a Major Physical condition and I agree with the OP that kids are way over medicated. Beyond that "kids today" are way to well informed, constantly being bombarded with school shootings, people being blown up and all the craziness in the world. IMHO the OP is also correct that too many parents are over protective and won't allow their children to have the opportunity to make mistakes that could lead to physical harm, which teaches them valuable lessons about life and acceptable social behaviors. I remember being seriously hurt falling out of a tree when I was young, I learned a valuable lesson pain hurts and it, along with things that cause it, should be avoided.
I also have several friends who have kids where each kid is diagnosed with some kind of mental disability or disorder. The one that makes me laugh the most is a little girl that's "shy" and was diagnosed as Autistic. She was on medication for it and after two years a psychiatrist told her parents the medication was effective and there daughter was becoming much more "normal" in her development later her parents found out that out she had been spitting the pills out, throwing them away and hiding them in a compartment of her jewelry box.
