    I think the main contributing factor there is shipping. It will be cheaper to make something locally than to have it shipped from China.

    Where machining will hold on longest will be in the making of precision metal parts. There are some 3D printing techniques that can do metal, such as laser sintering, or print-then-sinter with organic binders and metal powder, but they're still slow, expensive, and of limited precision. There has also been progress with micro laser ablation machining, which is great for very small precision parts, but it's still too slow and expensive for larger parts.

    Bingo. Wouldn't it be nice if people read the article before posting? The journalist was either getting a first exposure to the concept of evolution or was dumbing everything down for kindergartners, but it seems the researches being reported on found a specific gene that humans have, which when inserted into mice makes their brains more like those of humans.

    Perhaps they use sign language because predators are too good at following sound. Maybe they communicate with electric charge. Or they could communicate with carefully controlled breaking of wind.

    I would want no weapons checks. Should you really have to give up your rights in order to travel? Besides, the passengers would in general be safer if some random proportion of them were CCL carriers. The real problem as I see it is that if you started operating that way you'd have a government run false flag operation to "prove it's unsafe".
