It sounds like service will be initially offered in Novato, Santa Rosa, and Rohnert Park. I see no mention of Petaluma, but since we get Pac Ball DSL and AT&T cable modem here, we may not qualify as one of the "Broadband-starved areas" that they appear to be targetting.
My wife and I recently decided that it would be cool to get a pinball machine. Mr Pinball's site was a great resource, and helped me decide to get a old electromechanical (EM) machine instead of a newer, solid-state (SS) one. If an EM breaks, it's likely that a physical component is at fault (switch, spring, solenoid, etc). If an SS breaks, I think there's less that I can do about it.
I checked around ebay and a few other places, and figured that a decent, playable EM would cost about $1000 (in California). I ended up finding Space Odyssey for $250. It's barely playable, and in poor cosmetic condition. It'll be my evening/weekend project for a few months. The repairs should cost much less than the $750 that I saved.
The first thing that I did was order schematics, a manual, rubber rings, and new flippers from The Pinball Resource. I've since ordered a bunch of other stuff from him. And rec.games.pinball is great. Every time I've had a problem, I get responses within hours. They've helped me out at least two or three times this week alone (flipper rebuild, broken "drained ball detect" switch, unexpected slam tilt/short-circuit). Currently, I've got the machine disassembled for cleaning and waxing.
In short, I would never have purchased my pinball machine unless I found the kind of resources that I did online. Rebuilding a '67 camaro or a monster truck may be a macho thing to do, but restoring this pinball machine seems like the equivalent geek activity.
The company is against pirating music from Napster
Gee, I certainly hope they don't find out that napster works just great without a sound card. (although having no sound card would make it harder to enjoy MP3's after downloading them)
I keep waiting for the inevitable post from that www.sorehands.com guy who's always battling with Mattel. I hear that he types with his nose now, so it might be a couple more hours before his post is finished...
The linux kernel itself certainly seems governed by Brownian motion. Linus himself suggests that development is random, and that evolution ends up sorting out the good stuff from the bad.

Notice how these console reviews are posted under the "Games" topic (pic of an N64 controller)? Maybe you could update your slashdot settings to ignore this topic, and then just go to gamespot instead. Problem solved.
Instead of dictating that "battery live = good, backlight = bad", it would have been great if Nintendo could let us make the decision. Add a user-controlled backlight (like my Palm IIIxe), so that I'm responsible for managing the tradeoffs between battery live and having a viewable screen.
Granted, saying that there are zero OSX programming jobs is a little unfair. It is really small though -- probably even smaller than the mac's market share. I'm a professional programmer, and I know that I'd have to look HARD to find an OSX-specific job (outside of apple).
Upstream and downstream speeds will be managed to provide a faster and more consistent broadband service
I'd heard rumors that the much bemoaned 128kbps upload cap would be joined by a 1.5mbps download cap, and the quote from their press release seems to confirm this. Last week, my downloads benchmarked to about 4.5mbps (courtesy of www.dslreports.com), but now I'm getting a little under 1mbps. No complaints for now, though -- I'm just happy to be back online.
PS - Don't wait for AT&T to call you. I unplugged my modem for 30 seconds, renewed my DHCP (or you can reboot your PC), and voila, I'm back online! (Petaluma, California)
You bet. I hear these LAN parties usually have a decent internet connection. Since @Home is gonna leave me in the dark any minute now, I'd love to be anywhere else but here.
I often encounter the same kind of closed-minded zealot that you seem to be. "M$ does bad stuff sometimes [often?], so *everything* they do (and will ever do) must be bad"
But think about it. Do you drink Coke? Buy toys from Matell? Eat any food made by the Phillip Morris Corporation? Buy CD's or DVD's? Wear Nike shoes? *Everything* in our lives is touched by corporate evil. You can't just boycott stuff selectively. You can't just pick the trendy causes. You either boycott everything, or you're a hypocrite.

Hell, when my power went out my UPS kicked in and I was still able to surf the internet. Cable Modem service was still up. Now _THAT_ is what I call robust service.
I read slashdot for hours at work, and play tons of chess online. Unfortunately my boss hasn't reciprocated by offering me a huge paycheck yet. Are you guys looking to hire another "guru"?
I more or less say what I want, karma be damned. And THAT is why slashdot sucks so much - because this place has been ruined by fucking 15-year-old pukes who only care about karma. They nuture it like its some goddam Diablo 2 stat.

Sorry, but I don't really feel comfortable using a compiler that has an adjustment for "safety".
/safety=0 option probably produces similar output to random >app.exe
I suspect the
What a coincidence -- my slashdot main page was also generated by a swarm of tiny robots (honest!). They sure are versatile.
How does not having a sound card prevent you from listening to the radio?
Do they also put glue in the headphone-out jack on your CDROM drive?

I know it sucks to reply to your own post, but here's info on the new download cap:

Trying to get Slashdot in trouble again? Why not post some secret scientology docs while you're at it? :)

FYI - An Intel P4-1.5ghz puts out 52watts, while an AMD Athlon-1.33ghz emits 73watts. Almost fifty percent more!
Sure, no problem. Now who exactly in the BSD crowd do I thank for the OSX10.0 to OSX10.1 upgrade?
