Why are we concerned that a gigantic metal tube designed to transport people underwater and missiles/other weaponry does not travel as fast as an organic unit that does not transport personnel and ordinance?

You really are missing the whole point, I'm sorry to say. Here in Europe, I have fibre internet and when I pick a show to watch on Netflix, it starts in under a second. When I use VOIP there's no latency. When I video conference, the image is crisp and again, there's no stuttering or lag.
US ISPs have convinced you there is a problem here that needs solving, and that the only way to solve it is to charge you or Netflix to prioritize one type of traffic over another. If someone tried that here, all their customers would move to another ISP that had their shit together.
US ISPs have refused to invest their profits into infrastructure and are going, instead, to use "Fast Lanes" as a win win situation. They _still_ don't have to build infrastructure AND they get to charge people to put up with a deteriorating service.
When marketing accounts for a greater than 50% of the development costs (One figure I read said $180Mil and $100Mil on top for marketing) then yes, there's going to be huge hype of an average game. What happens when the marketing budget is tiny compared to the development costs? You get a cheap, great game but it might take a bit of searching to find it (Example: Terraria and many many other indy games)
Aardwolf and others are still going strong. I'm still writing code for one to this day (not Aardwolf) and it's a lot of fun taking things that were good in MMOs and easily incorporating them into a MUD.
But for your 4 examples, the car would have plenty of advanced warning and if no response came from the driver, the car would be capable of stopping in time. The tests they were passing with the DMV was to allow them to do further testing in more conditions. They were not trying to get ubiquitous permission for autonomous driving, just an assurance that it would be safe for other road users for Google to perform more testing.
If America had just allowed free trade with Cuba the inflow of US culture into the country would've long turned it into a pro-US state - it's the policy of isolation that's keeping it hostile in the first place.
You'd swear nobody in the White House had played Civilisation V.
More likely it will be a public statement about how, after a thorough examination in the courts, they found the phone company not guilty and how pleased he is with the result.
I would love to see footage from the time between discovery, and plotting it's exact trajectory. I wonder how many times they ran the numbers to be sure.

Interesting about your list, is that some of them (from my experience) are EVEN better in multiplayer, Civilisation, GTA V, Torchlight.
I'd also add Terraria and Borderlands to your list of games that are great single player, but also have the bonus of multiplayer mode.

GTA V would be one of those, but the shooting aspect of it was never that tough with Aim Assist.
