to see a show this good tank after a dozen episodes when there's so much crap that keeps going. Ah well. I'll buy the DVD's and hope he does something else with it. Heck, maybe he could sell it to Dark Horse as a comic book series. I'd buy it.
N2H2 claimed that providing such information to Edelman would compromise trade secrets, and that Edelman had no legal standing to be granted such permission because there was no imminent threat he would be sued.
Maybe they should have picked a more suitable case to file their lawsuit?
... on the reaction you get the first time you try it. As an employee or contractor I would feel obligated to point out why something may be a bad idea. If I get my head bitten off after that I would default to "Yes sir, here you go, exactly what you asked for." Fortunately I have a boss who listens when I point things out. Sometimes he acts on my recommendations. Sometimes his response is "You have a point, but we're still doing it this way."
Yeah, I know - a lousy answer, but it's the only one I've got.
Not that it matters, after the RIAA's heavyhanded gorilla tactics, I'd already decided to not buy another audio CD - ever. I refuse to give my money to a bunch of government-sanctioned thugs and terrorists.
Completely off-topic I know, but I wish a few people would actually check out the "Deep South" before putting it down. And no, watching "Deliverence" and "The Dukes of Hazzard" doesn't count. Speaking as a geek who lives in the Nashville TN area, let me give you a few facts -
We actually have floors here, not dirt and hay.
We wear shoes!
Indoor plumbing, even!
There are radio stations that do not play country. Really. There are some of us here who have never set foot in the "Grand Ole Opry."
Oh, and before you start talking politics and race, you *really* need to catch up. A good friend of mine has told me that she experienced more racism living in the Northwest (Oregon, Washington) than she has ever experienced down here in the south (and she lives in Alabama, no less). Racism is individual, not regional. I saw more racism when I lived in Delaware than I do down here.
Okay, rant time over. We now return you to you your regular Slashdot Paranoia Check.
Um. I already pay cash for most transactions simply because I find I spend less money that way. It's a psychological thing. I do have a beard and mustache - neatly trimmed thank you. I don't fly very often but when I do it's usually coach. I'm there to get from one place to another, thanks.
And what do you mean it's illegal to post powders? What the heck does that mean? Powdered what?
For example, in the article (yes, some people RTA)
They can list special meal requests, which may indicate a traveler's religious affiliation.
A lot of people order the kosher meal on a flight just because it tends to be better food. There's also an option for a "muslim meal." If lots of people start ordering the muslim meal then that makes that particular data point less useful.
I'm sure the more creative among you could come up with variations for other data types. (watch DVD's on your laptop instead of renting an in-room movie for one).
And is it true that some people get a choice of the army or jail in the USA?
Not quite on-topic but just to answer your question, no. At least not any more. Many years ago, up to around WWII or so, this was in fact a common situation. You could be offered the choice of jail or the army. Today's US military is an all-volunteer force with fairly stringent standards as to who they'll take.
You'd mod someone down because you disagree with them? I must be missing the point...
I didn't, so no, I wouldn't. I was just showing my annoyance. Now, if there was a "-1 I think you're misinformed" option then maybe I would have taken it.
Personally, I might describe you as a 'gun freak', but I'm not going to tell people not to listen to your opinions, just that you're wrong.
Okay, "Freak" was a bit over the top. I was annoyed. Sue me.:) Being one of those Evil Gun Owners, I get annoyed easily. Just because I happen to enjoy blowing holes in defenseless paper targets, leftists seem to think I'm more likely to go up on my roof and start shooting people or something.
(I am, incidentally, interested in hearing facts which might convince me of your position)
I have noticed that people on both sides of this issue seem to conveniently ignore any facts that don't line up with what they already perceive as the "correct" viewpoint. We could sit here and rehash them, but I have a shower to take and a surprise party to go help with soon. I most definitely am not going to spend a beautiful saturday (Sunny and a high of 65 - mmmm) like this sitting in front of my PC. Maybe later. If you really want to discuss it in detail, let me know.
It's reassuring to see, however, that despite your urges, you did do the Right Thing in posting a reasoned response to someone you disagree with, rather than trying to ignore or suppress them.
I freely admit, the temptation to mod him down as flamebait or troll was there. Wasn't gonna do it. Wouldn't be prudent... [snicker]
So....A "street-legal" gun is one that can only shoot 10 people in about 15 seconds or less?
I considered modding you down but there's no "-1 doesn't know what the hell he's talking about" option.
If you think you (or just about *anybody*) can actually fire a 10 round magazine and hit 10 individuals with it you have quite obviously never even handled a real firearm. In the real world (not the firing range where you have time, light and a controlled, relaxed environment) the stresses of what's going on around you WILL cause you to miss what you're shooting at. Recoil, bad lighting, adrenaline, excitement/panic, targets that move, concern for what you might hit if you miss - all of these combine to make accuracy something of a problem. A few quick searches on google will turn up plenty of information about average number of rounds fired per actual hit by Police, and they are required to train regularly.
But what the heck, I'm posting a serious reply to a gun control freak when I could have just modded him down, so that shows how silly I am.
Definitely. KNOPPIX is a great rescue disc if nothing else. I pulled down the EN version the other day, popped it in an old Thinkpad 600X with a damaged hard drive (replacement on the way). Booted to KDE, grabbed an IP address from DHCP, pointed Mozilla at the corporate proxy & was out on the web and our intranet shortly thereafter. Used the SMB browser to map over to my laptop's hard drive.
Did I mention I'm an old hand with Novell and WIntel but not experienced with *nix at all? So technically I'm a newbie when it comes to Linux.
So you're 26. Greetings from the mid-30's.:) You're almost up to some fascinating experiences. Like a few weeks ago I was driving and saw a bunch of high school girls (Jr / Sr types) in their gym sweat suits jogging along. I picked one particular one out to drool over going "Oooh, she's cute." Then I realized that was their coach / teacher. Yep, I'm officially old.
I remember I saw my first Pong machine back in 1977 (I was 8). We were living in a hotel in Germany at Uncle Sam's expense, awaiting some base housing to be freed up. No way was my dad going to ante up quarters for us to play that silly thing. Fortunately, we had other resources...
This particular Pong machine had a quirk - if you gave it a mild electrical shock to the changer it would give you a credit to play. A static charge did the job nicely.
So there we were - me and my little brother and other kids zipping up and down the carpeted halls of the hotel in our socks, zapping the Pong machine and playing for hours, with one of us always on the lookout to make sure no one from the hotel saw what we were doing. Even back then I was a larcenous little fsck, trying to Scam The System and get stuff for free.
... and sees all the hubbub. Stops, checks his logs. Yup. That's one helluva lot of hits on 1434 overnight. All dropped just like they should be. He wonders what the problem is? Surely nobody out there is silly enough to leave ports unnecessarily open on the firewall, are they? *yawn* Time for caffeine and comics.
We should use bizarre measurements in everything, just to mess with people. How about the speed of light expressed as 1798639627696 furlongs per fortnight?
Over at animeondvd.com they have the following post up on the main news page -
Right Stuf confirms Miyazaki DVDs (04:45 PM EST): While no features have yet been delivered to retailers (a standard practice for Disney; announce title, then a few weeks later provide details), Shawne Kleckner over at Right Stuf has confirmed that both VHS and DVD versions of Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service and Castle in the Sky are due out in region one on 04/17/2003.
It was probably an IBM Model M. I'm typing on one now and I have several more in the closet for future use (between cats and my wife I've already ruined 2). I acquired them after junking out old PS/2 76's at work.
If you want one of your very own, go to eBay and type "ibm keyboard m" in the search field. Plenty of results.
My boss is still an IBM nut, but my company finally bit the bullet and we just finished recabling 300+ facilities that were on 16Mb token ring over Type 1 cable with those UDC connectors you were talking about to Cat5e and 100Mb Ethernet. Well, almost. I still have a few sites out there that are token ring but they aren't for long. Anybody want a few (hundred) Synoptics 2712 token ring concentrators?
(no, I can't really give them to you but they're just taking up space in my storeroom until someone decides what to do with the them)

Actually I go to movies like this to sit back and say "Ooh, shiny!" and get lost for a couple of hours.
(goes back and re-reads article)
Ah. I see what you mean. Hmm. Unfortunately I can't mod my own comment down as overrated. *sigh*
Well, time to start the appeals process then, I suppose.
Did the submitter read the article?

Okay, time to lose that "Karma: Excellent" rating. ^_^

The people buying these filters are clearly
1) Trying to break the law by stealing cable content
"The people using these P2P programs are clearly
1) Trying to break the law by stealing RIAA / MPAA content"
In other words, it's OK to use the MPAA or RIAA's licensed content without paying for it but it's not okay to do that to the cable company?
What? You were expecting Superman?

CBS seems to have the most hi-res footage of the breakup.
No, they're just zooming the image. They have the same footage as everyone else. It's "bigger" but it's pixellated all to hell.
