This just hit me. Suppose we put our music files up, but then we either encrypt the files or encrypt the connection or something, and use a really shitty "encryption" algorithm like ROT13 or something. This should have two effects. Number one, one could claim that he had his files up for his own personal use and he had them encrypted so that nobody else could access them. Number two, if the RIAA broke the encryption to see that you are sharing files, then *BAM* sue them under the DMCA for circumventing encryption.

Now there is a lot of stuff to be worked out with this method. And it would make a criminal out of everyone(for breaking encryption) but the kind of people who download music for free don't seem to care about that sort of thing(though I'm not saying downloading music is a criminal act).

Read the parent a bit more carefully. Specifically, read the sentences surrounding the sentence in the quote you made. He was not giving that as a justification for copyright infringement. He was putting this idea out as a counter to the RIAA's claim that a person downloading a song without paying is a lost sale. The RIAA's logic is wrong because, just as the original poster stated, many people just would not buy the music, so it is not a lost sale. He was not justifying copyright infringement. He was only countering an RIAA claim.

I have a pretty regular use for my explorer. I could get by with a regular car but when I step back and look at everything I do with a vehicle, the explorer makes sense. I also got it for $2k a year ago. Many of the cars available for that price are either so old or so poorly maintained that they don't get much better gas mileage. I'm going to start biking to work, though. It is less than two milesso it won't be too bad. I need the exercise anyway.

What about sports cars? "Oh, well, blugh blugh, well most of the people who drive SUVs don't even need them!!" Fuck off. How do you know what they do with their cars? Do you follow them around all the fucking time? Well I say you don't need your car. It is completely overkill. Get rid of it. Ride a bike. That is all you need. My post was not an advocation of a drug war or telling people what to do. I simply chose two examples that people would recognize. Many people see right through the drug war and have lost faith in it. However, many people also realize that abuse of anything is rarely good for anyone. One could just as easily overdose on sugar as he could on cocaine. Once again, I am not advocating telling people what to do. It was simply an example to help people to understand my point.

If you buy a full retail version of Windows then you can do whatever the hell you want with it. It is not tied to any particular machine. However, OEM versions of Windows that come installed on computers are usually tied to whatever computer it was originally installed on. Although Microsoft isn't directly producing and selling windows 95/98/ME anymore, I believe there are still places that have legal copies for sale. There are certainly many many copies that people bought back in the day but they are not using anymore. Also, what is wrong with doing something just to say, "Hey, look at this!"? This may also pave the way for other, more useful projects, so this project may not be entirely useless.

You're so full of shit. When we got digital cable(time warner), a man from the cable company came out to hook up the boxes. He programmed the remotes for our tvs and showed us how to use them. There are power buttons on the remote for the tv and the cable box. Most of the time my family just leaves the cable box on and just turns the tv on and off. I doubt the box uses significantly more power when on than when off. They rarely need the original tv remote(only time is when they watch dvds and need to change the input on the tv).

To recap: you don't have to mess with programming the remotes(they should do that for you) and you should not need to use your original tv remote.
