...thank the fact I'm posting this from Nautilus, I guess. Those nightly builds from Eazel are nice, but still a little unpredictable =) That should have been in response to a comment about David Korn's thingamabob, to do with voting...sorry.
So...is there some reason they have to feel indebted to Conway? Is use of Perl the only reason for donation? Come on. I would have given if I weren't broke =) and my Perl skills amount to `print "hello world!"` =)
Hrm, posting anonymously so we can mod up our posts?
What the hell's so funny about that? That's lame. It also scares me because my first name is Shane and my university, in a generic fashion, has named it's computer labs Computer Learning Centers (or CLCs.)
You make me sorry I wasted my moderator points already. =) The former post was about the need for raising funds...if you had bothered to check before you posted that, you wouldn't have been modded down to -1. Please think before you post something like this. No, better still, don't post the "this has been posted before" type of post. It's annoying and rude, and oftentimes is news to a fair number of/. readers (though I say so without having done any research.
Now I'll probably get modded down for being "offtopic" =) I hope not, because this can't be said enough. Whining about repeat posts is wrong. don't do it.
Aside from saying "you're an idiot," I can't back it up...though I've seen the pictures. It's been done. If you have some evidence that it never happened...
Any evidence that Sony is making a greater profit on this?
More than likely, the eBay trolls are individuals who know there are morons who won't wait a month or so to get a machine at regular retail price. Ditto on retailers, who will be all too happy to jack up the price if they know they can get the inflated retail price out of it (you think not? what are you on?)
/*
as for an additional FP processor... you are living in the wrong millenium bud.

And if you'd bothered to read the post more carefully, you'd know the poster wasn't talking about a separate FP co-processor. I think the poster was referring to the built-in FPU--very much still an issue, bud.

Shut the fuck up asshole. Look at what you just posted. It is neither funny, insightful, interesting, or informative. All that was was a LAME ASS attempt at FIRST POST.

More than likely, they're artificially bumping up the rate of calls. This could be used to fool investors into thinking that, hey, the 800 number works really well.;)
Oh, come on; Linus started a kernel project because he wanted something similar to Minix with a freer license. Linux has morphed into something different, true, but don't belittle a community for creating rather than porting.
Having said that, if anyone wants a great Linux project that has BSD ties (one that anyone would like to take over HINT HINT) look at this site. I'm looking for someone to take over since I suck at coding;)
/*
It shouldn't be anybody else's responsibility to help make your life more pleasant or
make working with non-Free systems easier for you when you embraced them and consciously gave up your freedom.

Right. So you're saying that no-one producing free software should even attempt to help me out here. Uh-huh. Okay. Tell me, do you send nasty letters to those who, say, get XFree going on some piece of undocumented hardware? Because if you don't, you're a hypocrite. What RMS is talking about is different. Here, someone is wanting to write binary-only software and make it work with LGPLed software (not right, because anything derived from it not using it as a library *must* be a library AFAIK) and RMS says no, it's not OK (mainly, as I see it, because the dreaded "open source" phrase was invoked).
What you're saying is that, if I choose to buy hardware that I know to be non-compliant with Free Software practices, I shouldn't expect (or receive) *any* help getting it to work. Thanks for answering for an entire community of software developers.
Myself, I'm an idiot when it comes to developing software. One thing I do recognize is that much hardware is poorly documented (especially when compared to personal computer hardware of the 80's.) That's changing. If it weren't for the efforts of people who just wanted their video card, sound card, etc. to work under something other than Windows, things are changing, and for the better.
I pity those who choose to adopt the Hurd--it sure as hell won't work on much hardware (unless the GNU project chooses to practice the hypocricy you speak out against.)
I don't want to boycott the Playstation 2. That's my choice. I am free to do so; I choose not to. I'd prefer to see CS working on the PS2. Not everything needs to be 100% Free Software by RMS's definition.
/*
But in addition we gain another kind of freedom: 5) The freedom to compile/run games developed with Crystal Space on
ANY platform including the PS2.
That is not a freedom, it is just a practical convenience. People will be able to run the program on the PS2, but they won't be able to
do so in freedom.
*/
If the CS->PS2 closed-source wrapper doesn't happen, I won't be free to play/develop CS games on the PS2. For the latter case, I'll have to use proprietary Sony tools(correct me if I'm wrong.) Thanks, RMS, for watching out for my freedom.
...is that you didn't get modded waaaay down. Didn't you know dissenting opinions aren't allowed on/.? =)
Another thing to keep in mind: if you're in the kind of office environment where you're not allowed to install your own software, not allowed to take materials in/out of the office, etc., and you go ahead and install Linux on a machine...good luck. In August I left a business that, essentially, you could lose your job if you ran Norton Utilities on their Macs, and you didn't have a certain job title. I'm sure they'd have been more than happy to stick a boot up my ass for installing Yellow Dog. =) While the prepubescents on/. might see this as an evil that needs to be expunged before they hit the workforce, I say it's a necessary evil.
Rather than going off half-cocked and installing Linux "because I can" draw up a proposal. Show why having Linux instead of/in addition to Windows/MacOS is better. Convince the powers that be. If they don't like it, then swallow the bitter pill and keep using Windows/MacOS. People have to do similar things in all professions daily. Being in a tech field doesn't make people better than others.
Ya gotta think, some people don't need moderator status. Some people still don't get that whole "giving away something doesn't make it free" concept. To someone who doesn't understand that, I guess that sounds like flamebait;)
because, as you know, Microsoft's operating systems never change, and never change hands, and their focus on desktop && server never change. I'm gonna fire up PFS:Write on Dos 9 and host the image on my Xenix 2000 machine! Whoo! Yeah! Erm...wait.

Perhaps penix?

I'm still trying to get a boot/root combo going for ELKS on my old Tandy 1000 EX. Those beasts sucked. =)
