I'm a fan of cross-platform compatibility and I was a huge advocate for OpenGL and open standards - I ditched Windows 98 for a Linux distro when Quake 3 dropped, and I was happy to do so. The statement (late) that John Carmack is making is that DirectX is the refined API to program with, but it doesn't say he has left OpenGL out to pasture (obvious when you see RAGE run on an iPhone).
I'm all for Open standards, but evolution will always take place. I view this statement as a concern for OpenGL rather than an attack; get the API up to speed and the developers will use it.
(DOOM 3 / IDTech4 sucked on my Linux distros and Mac OSX)
I have faith that the community will abide.
I've been playing these games since Morrowind. Oblivion was nice and so are the Fallouts (3, Zeta, Vegas, etc). My gripe is that their current engine is terrible still. Moving to a new engine when they haven't fixed the old one does not inspire confidence.
Time will tell.
I'll still buy it though, cause I's Luvs Dragons.
I'm pretty sure that box cost a heck of a lot of Doll Hairs when you bought it. Send it to me - I'll take it off your hands. I still have a quadra 68000 plugged up. I will give it a good home.:)

"I am a Snowflake, and though I am only one, I am one."
Just a suggestion, but the MACs will allow for both operating systems to run on the same machine (and with parallels, etc both at same time). In the programming world, having a wide array of devices to test on would be better. Like when I write html/css etc. I don't only test on IE and call it a day. I have to test with a number of different browsers and OSs to make sure it looks and works for everyone. Given the education discount for Apple and the fact you still have XP licenses (as long as you remove from old machines) you may have the best of both worlds.
What of Donuts?!? That's great. (Sisters-in-law dead, fancy house, new luxury car,... Marge, pass me the donuts - what are donuts? AHhhhhhhh) One of my favorites. Bump*
My country has its money produced by the same international banking system as the rest of the world; with obvious name differences. The Federal Reserve IS completely as you described. "OUR" money only steals value from previously created money and has no real worth. We do pay more and receive less everyday - in fact: 50 years ago, $1 was equal to about $25 today and this trend continues with every bail-out and loan approved. US money institutions were destroyed in 1913 by allowing the practice of Fractional Reserve Banking.
If you want to make the point that stealing is OK, then please say that, because your analogy isn't so much a what-if but rather a what-is.
This driver update is probably why my 9600 GT popped 2 caps a couple of weeks ago. How lame is this? My card is no longer under warranty and it popped due to badly written/tested drivers. Oh well, I went out and bought an ATI 5 series. DirectX 11 and AvP is a pretty good combo. Thanks Nvidia!
I've been reading a lot of these posts and I can't help but click on TPB and notice all new titles for the PC, XBOX, and PS3. I'm not much for Socialism in gaming, but I can't be upset with a company for trying to protect its products and offerings. Sure, someone may be pissed that they can't play unless their online - however, as someone else suggested, you don't HAVE to buy the game.
Remember when Half-Life 2 came out on Steam, and how no one could play, even when online? I was one of the affected "no internet available" people who couldn't play at first. I had to hook my PC up at the parents house and wait for it to update. This did piss me off at the time, but I still love Half-Life 2.
You wouldn't be upset if your parents put a security system in their home. So, why be pissed that UBI Soft wants to make some scratch off their work? Can't blame them.
Just take a look at the below link (be careful, TPB is filled with Nasties) and put yourself in the developers shoes.
You want to move the family to a new Linux Distro - Mint and Ubuntu are very nice, easy to install, and have a nice array of included/installed software. You can use dual boot with an old XP partition and show them how to load their old files.
If they want to just surf, watch videos, type papers, etc. then Ubuntu/Mint is a great choice.
If they want to play games on the PC, then Windows 7 is the best choice.
If they want a terrible headache-PITA, then OSX86 may be the ideal choice (it's not, lol).
If they want to add/subtract/multiply/divide, then a TI-36 Calculator is probably for them.
Give them the choice, and show them the +/- of each. Although, if you show them Compiz effects they'll be hooked like I was some 5 years ago.
Howdy,
I worked with AT&T/Cingular right at the release and that is when "it" happened. From what I was told, AT&T reduced the range of their network to make data transmission more "reliable" for the iPhone, and in so doing, they pissed off a number of end users. We had so many complaints from people about their service no longer working in their homes, work, etc. I was there for the switch to 3G in OH and though the service is fast, the batteries don't last (heh); my phone(s) would be dead with very limited surfing. Oh well, maybe AT&T will rebrand again - back to Cingular and become completely Open Source... and monkeys might flight out of my butt. Bye iPhone.
GE stole their "ideas" from Tesla.
Wireless charging devices are just now becoming a viable solution.
Tesla was working towards creating that 75 years ago.
We are a stupid species that creates worth from nothing and fears change.
Don't worry, there is someone in a basement coming up with the "NEXT" big idea that has potential to change the world, though, it will be burried.
Nobody wants free energy... how would they keep their stranglehold on society
?
We'll be burning fossil fuels for a long, long time.

John Stossel and his crew better be getting into shape for the upcoming child-porn craze that will be hitting the streets.

Flash runs for sh*t on linux and OSX because Adobe's code is NOT accelerated for anything other than Windows DirectX APIs. Flash uses OpenGL libs and doesn't provide full screen acceleration with desktop compositing software. ie: If I run flash video under linux, and have compiz or beryl enabled, flash vids are terrible in full-screen, but after disabling compiz/beryl, full-screen works much better, though, it still isn't perfect.
(deadbeefcafe) hooked me up with the following info: Problem is Firefox, has been fixed in latest builds (not yet officially released). It's fixed in 3.5.3 apparently, there's a patch you can apply to the source on the bugzilla somewhere. There's a workaround in the meantime, if you want to wait for the fix to make it to the stable releases, you need to set the environment variable LD_PRELOAD to/usr/lib/libGL.so.1
There's a few ways to do this, I put "export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libGL.so.1" into my.bashrc as a quick hack; prior to that (because I couldn't be bothered restarting X) I modified the.desktop file so that it ran "env LD_PRELOAD=/usr/libGL.so.1 firefox %s" instead of "firefox %s".
The reason you're getting slowness is because you've disabled hardware acceleration as part of your troubleshooting.
I followed this bit of info, and BAM! my flash videos work well in full screen.
I don't have a solution for OSX, but this may help Linux'ers. lol
Apple's never gonna give it up (source code).
Never gonna let you down (except for spotting 3G coverage).
Never gonna turn around and desert you.
Open phones = Rick Astley
LOL.
I have to agree with the above statement. Apple sells a "life-style" computer with flashy interfaces and shiny Apple logos. I will say that using a Mac is nice, the layout and design are solid, and the stability is why most users purchase the Mac. I believe in performance and flexibility, and Apple does not design their machines for upgrading/enhancing, save for the high-end products that do offer PCIx16 graphics slots, etc.
Apple sells their products for those out there with the click-happy mouse. I work in IT support, and I'm amazed when I watch users install software. They will click yes and next until the install is complete. Generally, they will install a new IE search bar, a chat/irc program, a demo-software package, and a number of Spam/malware apps, in the hopes of getting whatever original software they needed installed.
Most users will benifit from the Mac, by not having the option to install software/demos, as it doesn't exist, lol. Everything on the Mac has to be paid for, iMovie, iLife, iUse the computer, whatever it may be... oh, and the updates. Whenever a new Feline is available, it's time to pay, even if the update is mostly under-the-hood ie. Snow Leopard.
Macs are made for people who don't like using the computer, but rather, just need a Working solution for whatever it is they may use (photoshop, blender, Protools, etc.)
Comparable PC's are usually a third the cost of a Mac, but keeping the machine running on par, especially with a Windows OS, causes a huge issue for the NOT SO SAVVY user.
Apples' entire advertisement strategy is based on making fun of the PC's interface (Windows Vista) and the support that the PC user receives. I will argue that someone who is "computer illiterate" will benifit from a Mac, and save money over the long run, while those of us who are "Power" users will continue to solve our own problems the way we always have: Plug and Pray.
IT (irritated technician): I agree with most of the prior Posts; IT is who is blamed when something doesn't work. No one has ever came to me and said, "Man, the Active Directory Accounts and roaming profiles work great, keep it up," rather, "Why the F*CK can't I access my homedrive and backups?" or "I typed the worng password 12 times, why is my account locked?"
If IT works, then no one cares... if IT doesn't work, it's your fault for changing things. People just love the "Click (100 times) and see approach" and I'll be paid to wipe their @sses until they automate my job, or send it to India.
Australia is but a stones throw from New Zealand, home of Peter Jackson, creator of "one-of-the bloodiest movies of all time" --Dead Alive. Aussies, should replace the "A" with a "P" in order to correctly convey their stance on electronic video entertainment.
Why don't we just use the tremendous amount of heat energy provided from the earth. This power doesn't have any negative points. No waste, no river polluting, no Radioactive cooling water dumpage. Nuclear is nice, but it requires a lot of safety precautions. GEO-THERMAL all the way baby!
I tend to agree with you: I was modded to hell for "trolling" on a discussion about OS X Snow Kitty. I made a comment that Apple, who says that the "Update" was mostly under the hood, was charging 30 bucks for their new software. I don't know, maybe I was bashing a little, but I was making a valid point, or so I thought. But, now I'm a troll and get a Score: 0 on everything. So, F*CK it, I really don't care what "SCORE" I have. I'm not sucking Apples man-juices so that some forum-cruisers will think I'm "Interesting." TROLL me, baby.
Microsoft probably doesn't include these lists, I speculate, because Microsoft and Google are in direct competition; i.e. Chrome vs. IE, Windows vs. (Googles new desktop), Google vs. Bing (live search), Android vs. Windows Mobile, etc.
Microsoft doesn't want to include the competitor in their software. Remember when Windows 98 came out, and the anti-trust issue came about? Microsoft did not want to include Netscape Navigator in their software because they (Netscape) were a direct competitor with Microsoft. The evil empire does not share power. One software mogul to rule them all. lol
Apple expects you to pay for updates to a system they feel is unstable and slow, and they are charging for it? That seems kinda weak to me, but what do I know? I tell you... I know better than to pay for upgrades. I've had XP since it came out and I've never had to purchase an update. I'm pretty sure, they've made a ridiculous number of fixes, both cosmetic and under-the-hood, and they've always just come down the line for free. You WIN-haters sure love spending more for basically the same thing. Sure, I can't make my windows wobble about, but I can run Crysis pretty well, and cheap. I spent about $300.00 bucks for my PC, that, by the by, can run OSX now that WINTEL makes the chips. MAC's are nice, but where is the value?
It has been my experience that all Windows OS'es suffer from a lack of driver support in their infancy. Windows XP blew until SP1, Win 2000 was terrible until SP2, and so on.
I was so annoyed with XP when it first came out, I formated the drive and loaded Mandrake Linux. When SP2 came out on XP, I decided to try again, and I was able to use my PC without crashing to BLUE everytime I installed a USB device.
I really liked the Win 7 RC, until I put it on a newer PC. (First MOBO was an ASUS socket A with ATI x700) This machine worked great with all my devices.
However, I upgraded my MOBO to a (AM2+ Asus board and geforce 9600) and every 5 minutes my wireless USB adapter would cause the device manager to freeze and I could only get it to work again by doing a hard reset. (win 7 would not shutdown on it's own.)
I tried a fresh install... same problem. I replaced my wireless USB for another... same problem. I decided to install Vista SP2 and everything works without Flaw.
I figure about the time WIN 8 is on the horizon, I'll be able to use Win 7 (SP2), until then... I am content using Vista. -Which, by the by, works fine when you disable UAC control. Games work better than XP, system is reliable, and I don't have to worry about my OS any longer.
Rectum? Damn near Killed 'em.
