  1. Re:The Disgruntled employee on A Look Inside the BSA · · Score: 2
How easy would it be for a disgruntled employee to do something else stupid and illegal to fuck over their former employer? Like, plant crack and call the cops?

But in the case of planting drugs, police actually have to gather the evidence and the DA has to prove it in court. Here the company has to all the work and has to prove innocence. Bassackwards if you ask me.

  2. The Disgruntled employee on A Look Inside the BSA · · Score: 4, Interesting

How hard would it be for a disgruntled employee to knowingly install software without proper licenses, then call BSA? No where is it mentioned that individuals will suffer, only the company. Of course the company can then take action against the employee if they can find them.

Even if your comapny does pay for all its software, being forced to audit yourself costs money. Unless people making false reports are held liable, this system can and probably will be abused.

  3. Severs, Server, SERVERS!!!!! on Scott Draeker Interview About Loki's Demise · · Score: 2

For me, the main reason I will sorely miss Loki, is that now it will be harder(impossible?) to get server versions of Windows games. Right now my friend and I have a UT and CounterStrike servers running on RH. I know I am preaching to the choir here, but MS has yet to build an OS that is as well suited for this task. The toolsets, logging, scheduling, proccess control, remote management, etc.. all of it is better on Linux. Loki has been great in providing updates for UT and was hoping they would continue with UT2.

And I am not saying that Windows can't do this, I am saying that Linux just does it SOOOO much better.

Sure growing organs and such is a longs ways off, but the potential is astounding. Some discoveries should belong to the public domain, like cures and other medical discoveries. And I understand that research costs money, but maybe we as a society would be better off if governments not spend so much on space when there are so many worthwhile medical research programs that arin dire need of funding. And if the governments fund it, then the knowledge could be public.

This should come to no suprise for most of the posters here. In fact after reading through posts, it seems that this thread produced more humor posts than not pointing to the fact that this addiction is well known.

Back in the MUD/MOO/MUCK days I used to give free access to some seriously addicted people. At the time I thought I was helping because now that person would not have to spend so much money on internet access. (Flat rates? what were those?) Of couse now I see that I was not helping.

The gaming addiction boils down to escapism. People who may not have a good grip on reality are able to have a better control over their online lives than their RealLife lives. They may not be the classical addictive personality, but they can still get hooked. Games that are most addicting have some sort of social interaction that can take the place of face-to-face interaction, i.e. MUDs, MMRPG, and for that matter D&D.

Of couse the addictive personalities can become addicted to just about anything.

The way one builds a network should be based of traffic needs. If a person at their cube has a workstation running high bandwidth simulations with a lab or other users, then it would not be a good idea to oversubcribe any link that user night need.

But like i said in my first post, not many people use 100Mb. The generic office user should have no trouble sharing one 100Mb link for all the devices.

  10. Shared bandwidth on 3Com's 10/100 Switching... Wallplate · · Score: 2, Insightful

I guess no ones has noticed the obvious down side is that instead of having multiple dedicated 100Mb runs to a cube, now all the devices are going to share just one link.

Sure, not many apps will use all 100 Mb, but that is certainly something to think about.

Lets see, Coco's, Denney's, Carrows, Bakers Square, Norm's, etc. And in the nicer areas, there are plenty of small, mom and pop style diners. Granted, the rise of Fast Food is disturbing, but I see no shortage of family diner either.
