the discussion was regarding embedded OSes, why do you insist on bringing in PC's? Yes, Windows got the most market cap and the biggest amount of shrinkwrapped software. I'm not convinced they necessarily have the highest total amount of developers when it comes to in-house software. Java totaly pisses on MS in that case, maybe.NET will change that, maybe not.
Yes, the discussion was about Linksys and they trying to keep GPL'ed code for themselves, which they very clearly according to the GPL could not do. If they do not agree with the licence a particular software is released under, then they should pick something else, which they could have done, noone forced them to use Linux, they could have written somethnig inhouse, go for winCE, or why not gone for any of the *BSD OSes, which licence allows them to pretty much anything with the source.
do they? Linux is running on a fair amount of appliances right now (remember, we're talking about OSes running on routers, PDA's and other hardware here), yes, yuo will have to release all changes you make to the kernel, but you can write your own closed source modules and drivers. also all userspace apps you do can stay closed, so what's the problem? Also, the same rules applies to server/desktop linux as well.
actually, I think they're trying to end up doing the same stuff as Rambus does, just sit and do nothing (pretty much) but collecting royalties from everyone. I fthey can get a bit the cake for each sold Linux they can jsut sit back and relax asthe money ticks in.
They probably got that idea on some 'earn-$$$$-fast' website
bullshit, noone forced Linksys to use linux, they could have gone for any of the *BSDs and they would have been fine. Don't pick OS'es with a licence agreement you can't live up to, simple as that.
very true, as much as it will hurt having this case hanging around, I think we're better for it in the long run. We might not be so lucky in having IBM behind us next time this goes to court
Also, from what I know, even YAST is redistributable as long as you do not charge for it. HOwever this do stop 'cheapos' redistributing their own ISOs of SUSE and charge for them.
it's a simple thing for nasa, ESA et. al. to check if the chinese got something up there or not. o course they've done so and of course they would have voiced consern if there was nothing to be found up there. For christ sake, it's not like the chinese haven't put stuff up in LEO before (think satellites) , it's not even the first time they put the capsule up there, it's only the first time it's manned
nope they wouldn't at all, since the BSD licence allows you to release derivates without the source. weird that they didn't pick any of the BSD's really...
duh, china already got ICBMs that can reach the states. This doesn't change a thing except to the better. i prefer them to send people into space than spending all the money on their military.
If the GPL would be invalidated all code would be protected by copyright (which is the reason fsf recommends you to turn over the copyright to them, since they got the resources to protect the copyright in case of violation - not really needed if your'e one of the big guys, i.e. IBM, etc). the GPL would be rewritten, all code would be placed under the new lcence and it would all be dandy again.
and how would this work? You would have to run the c code within some kind of sandbox for this to work, intepreted style. Why not just go for java or c# then. There's no way you can just 'add' security by a function call to a lib. c/c++ doesn't work like that.

even if the Moon is a very big moon for a planet our size, it's still a moon. the centre of gravity is within earth, 4700km from earth's centre. http://www1.tpgi.com.au/users/mpaine/scie nce.html# moontide
yeah, IBM been very successful in reinventing themselves. MS is pretty much good enough for most ppl. so I think they stick around. Having said that not sure what MS would do with a complete paradigm shift away from PCs. they might be stuck there...
I suppose... Anyway, Indeed, I can't wait for the moment when humanity put their foot on the moon again, let them be chinese or whatever. It's out first step out in the unverse.
What do they got to lose?? Seriously, it's not like they can lose their stocked up cash reserve! too *really* serious, I do wish it went to court, GPL needs a test, it it succeeds, great, otherwise, back to the drawing board and come out with a better version. copyright will protect the code in the meantime inbetween
Ah, but as the link says the russians got one there as well, so it can have been placed there by an unmannded mission!! Not that I believe the hoax theory, but fair to be fair the mirror is not a proof that man walked on earth. Lots' of other things are though, like the films from the moon.

NASA launches over the sea from Florida, ain't much folks around there...
actually, they're mostly using russian technology

They;'re using a modified soyuz capsule, believe the lifter is all theirs though. ALso heard they got a fair bit of russians working for them.
sorry, how would having the code residing on a computer without internet access been impractical?

I think they more think 'europe' in the disguise of ESA. And russia/good ol' soviet was *entirely* europe, it was asia as well
