Imagine there was a regulation that said all medicines needed to be at least X safe. Both farmaceutical companies and Uni researchers are screwed. Being held liable for how safe your pharmaceuticals are would ruin everybody. That's just one example of a regulation that would mess everything up, but just about anything would be terrible. Keep it free.
Sorry, poor choice for an example. There is more oversight in pharmaceutical research than you can imagine. It takes YEARS to get approval for a new drug. Companies spend million$ just to get approval for testing, let alone to release a drug into the open market. Google Phen-Phen for an idea of what happens when a drug is released too soon. If software developers had to go through this, there would be very little software released.
Remember, these are the companies that shareholders should sue for frivolously spending company monies with no legal foundation. And the top executives should get the boot
IMHO, companies look at the bottom line, the don't care about SCOrap or Linux. They look at $$$. $20,000 to make SCO roll over and play dead is probably well worth it to these big compaines. I hope Darl and Co all get theirs, but I can't fault a buisness for making a buisness decision.
and following this analogy, if 99% of all calls were prank calls, should the phone company be required to do something about it?
No, the phone company should not do anything. Maybe they could make a way to track prankster easier. BUT anyone who breaks the law should be prosecuted. PERIOD. I think P2P is crap, and loaded with viruses, and wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. That dosen't mean because some (most?) people use it for illegal means, it should be shutdown.
Just my 2cents
However, following your own analogy, do you think that you should be held liable if you did make prank calls all day long? but I think a better analogy is should the phone comany be held liable if the customer made prank calls ?
....SCO either owns or doesn't own the code that they are trying to claim as theirs. If they own it, they'll win their lawsuits, regardless of who is paying for them.
Hows does this affect SCOrap's SEC filing ? Didn't they just have a conferance call to speak to investors ? Isn't this something that they should have revealed ?
With so many of us having dvd drives, I wonder why there isn't a dvd version??
I asked this in a previous dicussion on Linux CD's and the answer has to do with how the OS reads DVD's. I don't recall the exact answer, but they are not "bootable". My DVD will boot a CD, but not a DVD. It may have to do with the way the bios reads the CD's
Apparently the CEO of Diebold is a staunch Republican and contributed heavily to the Bush campaign.
As a Republican, I see these posts and usually think it's leftist crap. Low and behold I found this site
It looks like a heck of alot donations to the good ole Republican party. I am sure Diebold greases the skids on both sides, but it does make you stop and think. After the ruckus in 2000 you think they would have learned.
It placed a few prank 911 calls, but there is no evidence that anyone was physically or emotionally hurt.
And if your family member died because 911 was unreachable would you still consider this a "prank". How about if I mailed you some talcum powder with "danger anthrax" inside ?. Would you still consider it a "prank" ?. Would you feel any less scared or "terrified" ? Having lived through WTC on 9/11, this is not the kind of prank that EMS workers need to put up with. Next time have it dial Microsoft Tech Support.
Ebola Reston (the Ebola outbreak in Reston, VA) does not infect humans.
It actually does infect people, just like Ebola Marburg (Named after a nun). It just dosen't kill them. It is a non lethal variant of the Ebola Zaire Virus
You could sneeze, and millions of little highly infectious AIDS snot-droplets would fly everywhere and stick to everything. AIDS would get the resistance to being outside the body of the FLU, and the FLU would get the incurability and near 100% fatality rate of AIDS
FUD, pure and simple. HIV is only spread by direct contact. If you sneezed directly into someones open wound, you MIGHT be able to infect them. You also might be able to hit the Lotto. Your odds are about the same. There are many other dangerous dieases out there. See the MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) We used to get a flyer every week in the ER telling us whats killing people this week, and what to look out for
Creating "a virus that could kill tens of millions if it got out of the lab" is a catchy line in an article (or a cheesy plot for a movie), but there is absolutely no basis for it. I think any benefit that comes from this sort of research far outweighs the hypothetical dangers.
If you really want to be scared, read this TRUE account of a near outbreak of The Ebola Virus in Reston Virgina. This book is called The Hot Zone by Richard Preston. When you realize how easily viruses ar spread in hospitals, and labs you should be terrified. Superbugs/Superflus/SARS these are the real dangers to mankinds future.
Could SCO customers still obtain those packages on their own?
From a post above about the GPL rule #4 : However, parties who have received copies, or rights, from you under this License will not have their licenses terminated so long as such parties remain in full compliance.
I think this means the SCO can't distribute these tools, but that their customers can use these tools.
IANAL but I read Groklaw
Spammers set up hundreds of tiny sites that do nothing but point to each other, thus inflating their PageRanks.
I've heard this called "Money Bombing" see this
Link . Apparently a bunch of spammers cross link each others pages trying to get higher rankings. I am sure they (Google) can weed this out. Just like they weeded out the Litigous Bastards (SCO) Google bomb after a few days.
Funny but also insightful! They haven't sold any because they can go to prison for selling something they don't own. You won't get a license even if you beg for it.
There was a post from someone on Groklaw A while back, sorry I can't find it. But the guy basically called 5-6 times, trying to buy a license, they said "Um, Uh, we'll get back to you on that". They never called. I agree, they are not selling them, because they are not sure they can.
f you were in Pennsylvania when this happened, let me be the first to congratulate you on losing your license for 12 months.
IANAL (But I do read Groklaw
As far as I know, refusing a field test is not the same as refusing to be tested. I know people who have refused field tests, on the basis that they are unreliable, and have blood tests come back negative. Again, I would rather face the civil penalty of loss of licence, than the criminal penalty of DWI.
realizes that with the legal limit going so incredibly low all it takes is one drink, plus a poorly calibrated breath tester
Actually, for a 200 lb man you would need >4 drinks in a two hour period. A drink is defined as 1 1/2 oz 80% proof booze, or 12oz beer/wine. This assumes a normal person, with a healthty liver. Here is a little tester Breath Wheel As for the poorly calibrated breathalyzer, the police must maintaine records of the machine being calibrated. If you are ever stopped, refuse the field test and ask to be taken to an ER for a blood test. Make sure they use soap and water and not an alchol wipe before they draw the blood. This will be the most accurate level.
I think a distro like xandros with red carpet and an easy installer, along with no choice of different dekstop environments or applications would be better for those kinds of people.
I can vouch for Xandros. I got a freebie at Linux World Expo a few weeks ago. Four clicks and it was installed. Took a small slice out of my Windows partition, and set it up for dual boot. Auto detected / installed my Nvidia card. Detected but could not set up my Soundblaster Audigy. After boot, went online, upgraded multimedia icon with on click, and I had sound. I also had a version of Codeweavers for plug ins for Mozilla. Couldn't be easier.
The biggest roadblock for me understanding the system underneath the GUI. If a program crashes Windows, I can usually figure out why. I see a lousy desplay on a co-workers monitor, and I know to go to display manager and check the driver. I just can't seem to get that level of comfort in Linux, despite installing/running/crashing/re-installing it for the last 3-4 years. I dont even mind editing a config file or two. But I need to know where they are and what I need to do. This is the main stumbling block as far as I am concerned

Funny, but almost on point. Remember the thing about doctors, just like firemen, programmers, house painters etc, 50% will be below average. The problem is, a below average house painter can ruin your house, but a below average doctor can kill you.
What to do ? Choose a doctor carefully. Ask arround, ask friends, family, lawyers, clergy. Find someone and put your trust in them. There are doctors who I trust, and there are doctors that I would not let treat my dog. Any doctor that blows you off when you ask questions, dosen't deserve to be your doctor. Find someone you trust, and stick with them.

MSRA= Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus
Here is a great link from the CDC.
Like you said, this is the result of years of overabuse and over perscribing of antobiotics. Question for parents - If you took your child to the doctor, with a fever, and he told you "It is a virus, no need for antibiotics, just go home give him fluids and tylenol" Would you be happy? This is what contributes to these problems.People expect to be given medicine when they are sick, they cannot comprehend that the illness will run it's course. I have three teenage sons. Each of them have been on antibiotics less than 5 times. I have friends whose children get antibiotics 5-6 times a year.
We have become a society of quick fixes, if something is wrong take a pill/drug/drink and you'll feel better. We used to have a joke in the ER. You tell a patient " You have the flu, I can give you medicine and you will be better in 7 days, or you can go home and take tylenol, and drink fluids, and you will be better in a week"
" I pretty much agree, at this point, I stop all executables, and.zip files at my mail server.. kind of a pain, but between that, and the 25 RBLs I have setup, I only get about 10-15 unwanted emails a day... *sigh*... I won't run windows in front of a firewall now, even if psuedo-secure (only known port s available).. too much of a pain."
I think this goes to the point, you are obviously a well informed, savy computer user. You are not the problem. People who click on the link "to see what this does" are the problem. My friend who has a Masters in Finace and works for a VERY large firm, won't let me email him at work "because I only use it for work" Yet at home he has broad band , direct to his XP box, always on, and he has every piece of crapware, malware, and such installed. (He does run Norton AV, and I send him reminders update the definations when I read of particularly bad virii) He just can't see the danger of Bonzi Buddy and other "helpers" installed on his machine. These are the people who we need to educate.
PARENTS have to waive their own rights before the drugs can be administered. It's the parents who ultimately make the choice, not the schools, and not the doctors, except in the unusual case where the child is the ward of the state.
Although you are right, I think the parents are often bullied into giving their kids the meds. They are scared, they are told their kids will be expelled, they are threatened by Child Welfare agency's etc. Yes the parents have the final say, but they are often poorly informed, poorly prepared to deal with this. I have worked in the medical field for more than 20 years, and have seen way much of this. Patients do not ask enough questions, and doctor's, nurses and other professionals don't offer enough information and alternative treatments. BTW I have nothing against any medication, including Ritalin, as long as other less intrusive means have ben tried and failed.
Sorry, poor choice for an example. There is more oversight in pharmaceutical research than you can imagine.
