  1. Switched from Lease to Buy on Is Leasing Really Worth It? · · Score: 1

My company switched from leasing equipment to buying a few years ago. At first, they renegotiated the lease agreement to switch from two years to three years. At about the same time, they bought all the monitors. A year or two later, they switched to buying all equipment. The last leases expired a couple of years ago, so everything is owned now.

The net result is that instead of being forced to upgrade our PCs and workstations every two or three years, we upgrade them whenever we have a real need to upgrade them, which is generally when they break. Everyone seems to be pretty happy with the new system.

The real issue is that in the 90s, you could double the performance of a system by upgrading it every two years or so. Now, you'll often find you're only getting a 20% boost after two years, and it's just not worth the hassle of swapping systems. Users used to love leases, now they hate them for those very reasons.

The GPL has nothing to do with copyright ownership. Hence, projects like the Linux kernel are owned by the many different contributers. I'm hurt here. I use MythTV to record HDTV, much like you use your HDTiVo. However, because MythTV is open source, it is impossible to have it encrypt the outgoing signal using HDCP, even if I'm using a DVI connection to my HDTV.

Further, I have a CRT-based HDTV, and when using the DVI input, it has far too much overscan. If I use component output, then I can adjust the overscan, but I can't with DVI, so going digital isn't the best option.

And even further, my TV has only one DVI input, so if I have multiple HD sources, then I have to recable my TV to change sources (like, say, a HDTiVo, satellite receiver, and broadcast ATSC tuner).

Their video drivers are half-decent. By "half" I mean the half that works. Every driver seems to introduce some obscure bug while fixing others. Casual users are fine with most of the drivers, but if you use some special feature like twinview or TV-out overscan, then you have to be careful to use the right version. Oh, and their web pages clearly state that the video cards have on-board MPEG-2 decoding, but there's no driver support for that.

As to their motherboard drivers, I don't think anyone is using them. Newer kernels include GPL driver support for both ethernet and sound. I've heard some reports that the nVidia driver is better if you need SPDIF-out, but I've also heard reports that those drivers have various problems.

Still, with all that said, nVidia is clearly head and shoulders above other vendors, and I thank them for their efforts.

I've also heard some suggestions to use the pci=noapic command-line option when booting the kernel (in your grub.conf or equivalent); I'm not sure if that's a nForce issue or a 2.6 issue.

Have you compared the prices of 200GB drives with 400GB drives? The higher capacity drives cost more than double. Now if you happen to have more storage space than you know what to do with right now, then fine, but sooner or later you'll find that running a script overnight to compress your files is less painful than the cost and effort of a hardware upgrade.

And if you're doing backup by syncing over the network with another system, then you cut in half the storage cost on the other system, as well as the network time.

If you have enough computing power to manage a file system on a hard drive, then you have enough power to uncompress a file as you play it--that's why they put MP3 players into DVD players; it didn't increase the hardware cost.

The companies agree to merge, and they agree what the company being acquired is worth, do some math, and convert the shares of the acquired company into shares of the new company. The math is much like doing a stock split, though the ratio usually involves a number of decimal points. (The accounting for the investors is also much like a stock split.)

The real question in this case is why is Mandrakesoft's stock worth enough for Conectiva investors to consider this to be a worthwhile deal (as opposed to grabbing on to a sinking ship). I haven't looked at the business side of either company, so I can't comment there.
