WTF? If MS had done to the PC what Nintendo did to the hand held gaming market, it would make the current and past antitrust cases look like a walk in the park.
remember the Sega game gear or the Atari Lynx? Those other hand helds that are also dam close to a decade and a half old.. remember colour screens and the ability to watch TV on them(well i only remember the GG having a TV adapter but i never liked the lynx)
Imagine MS having held us back at Dos 5 for 10 long years as the default desktop OS, and Linux and Mac having systems of today to compete with Dos 5 and 386's, but still losing?
Its because ppl dont check the ID corectly, having worked in hospitality for 7 years we where warned about that and why not to accept it, bascily i pick up your shiny new CC in the mail from your mail box, i write "SEE ID" on back, i then go o9ut and buy a new $5000 plasma tv, and they check my ID, and dont compear the name on the ID to the name on the CC.
they are supsoed to keep the card in that situation, your are supsoed to phone the bank and get a new one, at lest over hear thats how it works, you usaly dont get charged for a new card either, under the signuter stip it says "VOID" over and over agine, so you know you arent suposed to accept that card.
and if you travle over seas your screwed, see id seems to be an american only thing, also those credit cards with pictures that ppl try to get away with out signing? also useless overseas, we all check the sig. IVe had ppl argue till there blue in teh face "but you saw my ID" or "cant yous ee i lok the same as the F* pictuer" but the fact is, most of us still require proff we can mail into the credit card company when you say "shit my card was stolen, i dont recall shoping at XYZ" and me saying 'well the picture on the card matched the dudes face' meens said tracnfer will be refunded and ill be left paying for it.
WE are talking about companys, rember some of these guys are still runing mainframs with the same software, hardware and even wetware they orignaly got 30+ years ago..
They need to be know that in another 10 or 20 years there data, there programs, there userbase will still be able to do the 'same shit differnt day' day in and day out.
They will need to be able to access at the lest 7 years of data at the drop of a hat, ever min wasted trying to track down a slight differnce or problem in a fork could cost them big bucks.
As far as they see, forking is the worst thing that could happen, chose a dieing fork, and it coudl be game over.

Sure, they try, but things do get hacked, for example the EOS300D (Digital rebel to you US'ers) has had its firmware hacked for quite a while, as its the only Digital cammer i own, its the only one i pay attchen to, but im sure theres plenty more out there.

My first car, a stock standard 1994 lancer GLI coupe, it had 90K-kms(56K-miles) on it, i got it serviced at 100k(62m), 110k(68m) and 120k(75m).. then went to 160k(100m) with out a service or an oil change just toping up.
at 160,000k(100,000m) i blew the distributor(sp), something to do with doing 110kph(68mph) normally I changed at 95kph(60mph)... but I just wanted to see)
Then going from 160,000k(100,000m) to 230,000k(140,000m) with out changing the oil just top ups, no servicing.. At 230,000k I blew the distributor (sp), again (the original replacement was a cheapie one) the high tension wires apparently needed to be replaced too..
Then didn't service the car again. It was written off (flooded the engine crossing a ford) and that was at 290,000kms(180,000 miles), though I did take to changing the oil my self every 10,000kms(6,000 miles).
At the end of 200,000kms(125,000 miles) driving over 4 years total upkeep on the car was 5 services, 2 distributors (sp), 1 set of high tension leads, 6 oil changes my self and 3 sets of wheels.
So im not sure what was magic about my car, or what others have done around you, but my experience was good enough that my next car was a Mitsubitchy too.
And lets not forget by toping up the oil, I usually drove for 2-4 weeks before adding oil after the light came on.
And just incase you are wondering, yes I did flog the shit out of the car all the time.
Ive seen my old lacer without a spoiler geting blowen across lanes on the freeway in gale force winds, and could feal most crosswinds hit the car, add a spoiler problem goes away, but no spoiler will be fine if your just driving yoru car to chuch down the street grandmar...
