This is absolutely true, living proof here. But, the cost of living all over Asia is skyrocketing - however, if you are poor u are poor, and don't really notice changes in the global economy anyway. The poor grow food in their backyard. The poor don't drive around much in gas guzzling autos. The poor have little use for laptops and cellphones, as there is no way to charge them anyway. What USAID and other aid agencies are trying to do is to build up middle classes in "under developed" countries in order to create bigger consumer bases for multinational product delivery. It's like fattening up the lambs before slaughter. Countries like Cuba and many others have governments that resent this type of aid.
However, what makes this report fishy is the fact that aid agencies almost always work on programs approved by the government of the host country. They can't do anything without a lot of paperwork and graf - not even hand out bags of rice! So for someone to get arrested for implementing a project is very odd. They must have done something else, or really pissed off someone in higher places who was perhaps not getting enough kickback. This story has more to it that is untold.
You can go to any corner phone store, have a selection of hundreds of phones, and then pick a carrier sim card of your liking, and within seconds you are on your way making calls - that's what's really different. You have complete control over what you call/play with, what you pay per call, and you can change your mind in an instant. That's what is different about the USA and the rest of the world as Areyoukiddingme points out. Phones are "unlocked" (an Americanism) out of the box, and you are not breaking any laws or EULAs when you want to modify the phone. The American way of using phones is just pure insanity, and I don't understand why the people there put up with it. If they tried it here, people would be burning tires in the streets and burning down the parliament building.
And now they have a great way of doing just that - a breathing tax! I am so glad that I live in a country where the people would not stand for that...they would burn down Parliament before paying a single rupee.
To the op, yes that's being petty, you should forget it and go program something (or whatever makes you happy), and don't worry about what u are called, u will have many names in this lifetime.
And what's so strange about that truism is that the code evangelists are usually the ones embracing all the visual coding tools, and then telling the underlings, "Here, throw that simple editor away and use this instead." This makes the evangelist look super cool to execs, even when coders are suffering silently or unheard.
What I find interesting now that I in the media biz, is how successful such as interfaces like you find in Shake, are so effective, allowing you to zoom in and out of complex programs quite nicely. So I strongly disagree with Jeffrey Snover.
Well, that may be all well and good for kids sitting in the sanitized play yards of the west, but I don't see this as good news for the tens of thousands of kids who die of diarrhea in Nepal each year. But then again, overwashing is not an issue here. Finding a bar of soap is.
But what I wanna know is why the iTunes Store is now taxing us?!? I just got charged $.49 when I purchased 1Password Pro app. Where does that money go?
Dude, I totally agree with you. We are being channeled into systems that will not be under our full control, and doing anything about going down that path (other then willingly) is to be deemed unlawful. But I am not sure if freedom-loving individuals have any choice at this point...talking about it on/. is not going to change anything, other then providing a record of the dissent. So as they say here, "Ke Garne" or what to do?
It's worse then that. For people with Exotropia (I for one) they won't be able to see the new 3D format coming out in theaters everywhere. There should perhaps be a warning about this at the ticket counter. But a legal case? That would be stupid.
I doubt the majority of the voting public will ever hear about nor understand this issue. Meg Whitman will win because all others in Sacramento have failed miserably, and folks will figure if a superman can't get the job done, hire a superwoman.
I'm an American living in India. The standard here is bare wires into any hole in the wall. I've been zapped with unregulated 220 more times then I care to remember. But they say it's good for you...like shock therapy for mental patients. Perhaps America should switch to 220 and the Indian standard.
Fearlessness could never be described as being unimaginative, stupid, and faithless, so your turning of FDR's phrase is inaccurate at best. From Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche to www.answers.com, fearlessness has not been used in this manner. However, the content was good, so kudos for that...
I liked this joke because it points out the futility of desalinization - if the seas are so polluted with bio-hazards that they will make the water unfit for consumption in the first place...all that's left is some dirty salt.
At this point in life, HFS is working fine, and the drobo is quietly humming away. I'm glad snow leopard was relatively painless to upgrade too, and not sure this would have been the case if ZFS had been included in 10.6.

Looks like they use a lot of it in the making of the Tilt-O-Whirl shuttle craft in Explorers (1985 by Joe Dante).

Good point Wolf.
Makes perfect sense. Add that to the list of reasons never to fly over America, despite the renowned cabin service.

I agree with both of you. American business is dog eat dog. That's why I refuse to engage. My dog eats rice, and my business is fine.
At least we'll always have new versions of Madden!
Go Madden! The Broncos won this year on the iPhone...it could only happen @ EA...
But what I wanna know is why the iTunes Store is now taxing us?!? I just got charged $.49 when I purchased 1Password Pro app. Where does that money go?
Boy are they smart...

I agree. Bring it on. It's gotta be better then reality TV, once the new works make their rounds there.

Where the fuck is our money going? It certainly doesn't seem to be the bridge.
State employee salaries and pension increases apparently...

Please dear god someone now save me Entourage hell and rewrite something that works...
Don't you mean demonoid?
No, that ones gone too (for the moment? been 1 month now). yar.
