    I think the keyword here is "visible". So either you install the antennas indoor (behind windows made of plastic, in the roof) or you could use one of these antennas they use for cellphone base-stations. I've seen one that looks like a cross installed on top of a church...

    So if the RIAA is (probably) allowed to DoS someone on a PtP-Network. I don't see how this kind of bill or legislation is supposed to work in practice.
    I mean suppose i'm sitting happily in front of my pc in, say germany or france or whereever... They DoS me. Are the breaking german/french/whaever law?! I think so...

    So how is this thing supposed to work after all?? Since i don't live in the USA i might sue them if they crash my companys router while some stupid guy from marketing is downloading the latest pr0n flick.

    First off all the "Deusche Bahn" is AFAIK a private company despite it's name. So it's not germany "outlawing" free speech it's a private company suing another company

    Second, imagine some radical group in the US. posting instructions on how to hijack some planes and fly them into skyscrapers on the internet. Don't you think your FBI would shut these sites down as soon as words gets out?
    There goes your "free speech"...

    I mean the part:

    Cards with addresses in the USA have a new Get Map button in the card preview pane which creates a map for that address at mapquest.com

    Well, i'm not shure if i'm extremly lucky, but mapquest is doing just fine with any european address i can come up with!

    Right now my company is working with the local schools and the university to build a (you guessed it) linux based network.
    We're setting up a wireless backbone using cisco equipment (so not the most cheapest alternative, but afaik the most configureable) and linux based web/mail/groupware/whatever servers...


    No license-fees here. Only one Box of (SuSe) Linux.

    I know for sure that a large telco in germany (namely mobilcom) used have about 4+ Mio Useraccounts stored on a Linuxbox running MySQL.
    Last i heard (about 2 years ago) they dropped the MySQL in favor of Oracle but still had some Linux boxes running it...

    Is it just me or has anyone else allready heard this kind of discussuion (in the eighties, maybe)?
    I mean we're talking global nuclear war here. Hello? Are you thinking anyone except for some fanatic nationalists out there (who don't have access to ICBMs) may be stupid enought to launch a missile against the USA. They'd be dust in approx. 40 minutes...
    What unnerves me more is the fact the someone in W. (everyone in charge right now) seems to be happy to spend billions of $ on missile defence on not a fscking buck on global warming...

    I bought a dvd-rom and a matrox card. With both of them came a WinDVD player. I bought a copy of Matrix. So why am i not allowed to play it with linux?
    It's like buying some wheels and gasoline and not being allowed to use them on my car (which i assembled from parts i got for free).

    Please don't give me that piracy shit! I don't want to copy it (even though i don't see why i'm not allowed to copy it for personal use, since i bought it) and i don't want to sell it or show it to an lager audience....

    I thought the point of 802.11 was using spread spectrum?! So if you want to intercept a wireless transmission you'll have to use a spectrum analyzer. If i'm correct with that one (flame me if you must, i'm no electronic-specialist), that's not the most likely setup for a skript kiddie...

    Plus you'll have to know the SSID and break the encryption. So if you use a directed antenna, say, 3 degree AND use some kind of VPN over the WEP-encryption it shoud be quiet secure.

    In germany you can go up to 150mW which is more than enough if you narrow the beam down to 3 degrees and improve the signal-quality on receiver.
    We're not amplifying the sender at all.

    Yea, probably you could do it that way. But since we're just improving the performance on the receiving end (between the antenna and the wireless device) it's not importand what vendor you prefer. Here in germany we're using cisco/aironet since their pcmcia cards work nicely with linux. By the way you should think twice about buing their access-points since they just contain on of their pcmcia cards which are much cheaper.

    Nice, to start with:-)

    Currently we have a 802.11 based system which can do up to 30km on a p-t-p link and 5 km in radius!!

    We're using a selfmade module for enhancing the signal on the receivers end and 1,8m parabol antennas.
