I'm guessing that if Porsche decided to develop the next great thing in lawnmowers, all the porsche owners who take their cars to porsche festivals, and parade them around would probably buy the lawnmower too.:)
That being said, I agree that this is a skewed way of viewing the markets...it's as though the customer no longer decides what's is necessary, the producer does...I hope supply and demand cathes up with them cuz of it.
Does anyone else think that this is a bit out of hand. I'm not sure what they expect to reap from this, but I wonder why these claims have never been made before. What are the open Alternatives to JPG, in the way that PNG is alternate to GIF?
Although, nothing stops them from playing shows and making music...what is with the idea that artists can't make money without the labels. In fact, the labels can't make money without the artists, who they bilk out of their just share.
Sorry for not getting all the details right, but my copy is at home...The june issue of IEEE Computer magazine has a short article about a company that has developed a Holographic DVD storage unit that I found to be quite interesting.
It stores about 100 GB worth of data, so in that regards it puts the standard DVD to shame, but at the same time its access time is 1.5 or so times as fast as standard DVD due to the parallelism inherent in the storage mechanism.
No thanks! I want technology that seperates me from my fellow human beings. All this technology that tries to bring us together ends up biting us in the collective ass.
Hmmm....the funny thing is that without the technology bringing us together in the first place...we would not have the skills to create technology that will bring us further apart...or am I just confusing myself?
I understand that there are a few people who are angry at blizzard suing bnetd for what is supposed to be simply reverse engineering the server system that they built, but the fact remains, I will pay for my blizzard software and use their battle.net service even if someone were to throw a free (lent, burnt, downloaded) copy with a free server right in my face...why?
Easy. It's because I have enjoyed playing blizzard games, their license is better than most gaming companies, and finally they do the things that most software companies should be doing, but aren;t (i.e. releasing software only after sufficient testing -> delays are no big deal when I get my warcraft 3 box cuz I know that it's gonna work, and it's gonna work good).
So, to all those who don't want to buy it because of the bnetd thing...fine...for those who want to enjoy a good piece of game...buy it, and support one of this centuries leading pioneers in the digital storytelling revolution.
Fortunately Hollywood isn't the only place where movies are made...If they did decide to reel-in the 35mm format then there would probably be a marketplace looking something like:
those that want (??) to pay 15-20 dollars for a film that is all flash, and no substance, and
those that want to see a movie that is made on film because it's cheaper, and doesn't require mammoth amounts of special effects
I'll take the cheaper option, foreign films and quality shows anyday...
I guess what I see is that this piece of paper doesn't really mean much in the long-term...whether it's there or not isn't really relevant...the two cases could work out like:
a) earthly nations appropriate portions of planetary/lunar surfaces and attempt to control them, a la the europeans trying to control the americas at one point in time...eventually, the great distance from earth to these places will mean that self-governance is a much more efficient means of governance, and the people will see that and put it into action.
b) said outer space treaty is scrapped, and these bodies naturally build themselves into a form of governance (perhaps without conflict)...
I don't know, but I am very interested to know what the future has in store for mars....
well, this sounds reasonable, but I kind of like the yoda in Empire better than the yoda in Clones anyways...the puppetry makes him look frail and old, while at the same time allows luke/r2 to act interactively with hime in a realistic manner.
that even if star wars gets drubbed (I use this term in reference, not in correctness) there will still be an episode 3 in couple of years, and it will still make enough money to cover it's bills...thus saying it was a decent enough investment
the worries about the mooon being totally overdeveloped are, in my opinion, unfounded. The moon is geologically dead, and there may be trace amounts of water located on the surface somewhere, but any development that will be done there will be with resources coming from other locations (i.e. Earth, Mars) and by the time that technology is around that converts geologically dead moon into viable construction material, we'll have little problems with garbage as well.
This makes me think, when are MMORPG's going to act as a distributed kind of thing, i.e. I set up a house, and it resides on my computer, and those that wish to visit my house get it's info from there...
I'll call it Nebuchadnezzar
Well, could be interesting, but I think the movies could be a more interesting way to spend my time. MMORPG's are cool, and they are bound to become cooler and cooler, but a Matrix one? When do I get my neural implant?
I think the important question to ask is not whether this is only the engine, but whether the source includes art material and stuff like that...e.g. models and textures and stuff like that. Otherwise it's just a bunch of code without stuff to do
We should give 2% so the sci-fi people get more of a say as to what's going with the space industry...I'd be happy to know that my star-wars ticket costs would go to the development of a brand new death star
If people keep stealing their music, artists won't have any means or motivation to make more music.
Does this mean that music never existed until money was invented, or that as soon as nobody buys CD's anymore that music will cease to exist??
I'm not so sure about that...
Who reads the License anyways?

Doesn't it suck that the one form of modern society which is most important to protecting the common person(ie. the Law) is basically incomprehensible by that same person. Ask anybody who has just bought their first computer what their license restricts them to do, and they probably wouldn't know what to say, except that maybe they can use their computer in the same way as any other consumer market item. How many people actually read that stupid box with small print AND THE PART CONTAINED, BUT NOT NECESSARILY IMPLIED BY THE CAPITAL LETTERS, WHICH IS IN FACT THE DIGITAL EQUIVALENT OF THREAT, IF ONE WERE TO LOOK AT THE WAY BLOCK LETTERS WHICH ARE SO PREVALENT IN THESE LICENSES. Why can't they just write a license that says: Hi, enjoy your computer. You bought it, so it is yours to use. I think any able minded individual can understand that.

Mozilla lets you shut those down...I don't know any other browsers that do.

also, when he says drubbing, what does he mean? 115 Million in four days ain't bad, if you ask me...

wow, thinking about this now...arnold vs. the iceman vs. jesse ventura, fighting for their lives in the 'running' for office
great...I'd like to use my BFG to take out george dubya any day...wait a minute, maybe the rail gun is a better choice
...or sleep through most of it
