Why have the toolkit in the server at all. Additionally, let's rip out all the graphics code out of the server altogether.
Make server nothing but a manager of windows, passing areas of shared memory for apps to write what their window contents will be. Then the server blits it to the screen.
Don't forget the quality of the components there dude.
With the Mac you get an AWESOME monitor, it's way bigger than a typical 17" monitor (yet that's what Apple calls it), it is top-notch screen.
You get HQ keyboard and mouse, the basic Dell Mouse and keyboard is utter crap. Also, I'm pretty sure that system comes with Windows XP Home, more crap.
You also get a better design, which will use less space and be easier to install. You don't have a bunch of wires sticking out everywhere (for the speakers for instance). Multiply these factors by a couple dozen too.
Of course, try to compute the cost of administrating a couple dozen Dells vs. the a couple dozen eMacs and I'm certain in the long run the Emacs will be cheaper.
Doesn't the U.S. Government provide monetary compensation for whistle blowers? I have heard this before in the past so i did a google on it. I found bits and pieces of information showing this to be true but nothing official.
Oh my, why even write this? Why is it so disturbing to you that people decide to purchase a different computer than what you have?
Thank you for your comment, obviously many people don't give a damn about it though. People are buying these things like crazy because they believe it is a good tool for THEM, not you.
This is exactly what AMD and Transmeta chips do. They convert x86 CISC instructions into blocks of VLIW instructions. We have been running VLIW machines for many years, actually.
I'd be won over when I can put in a DVD into the TiVo, have the TiVo rip it, maybe convert it to MP4, and keep it like a "jukebox" onto its HD.
Storing all my DVDs (and shuffling them into and out of the DVD Player) is a major pain the arse. The software exists to create something like the above now, it's just not legal here in the U.S. (what a bunch of crap, really). If I own a DVD, I should be able to store it on a HD for personal use.
The major problem may be with people renting DVDs and ripping them to "own" them forever. This situation could be handled by TiVo, the movie industry, and blockbuster (etc) agreeing to "tag" rental DVDs so that they cannot be ripped on a TiVo.
I have considered making my own DVD jukebox, the software is definetely there, configuring it is a pain though. Also, without some type of conversion, you'd need multiple HDs just to hold more than a dozen movies.
It's interesting that nobody complains about the U.S. liberating Germany from their leaders in WWII, even though many more civilians died in that endevor than will die in this one. The ends did in fact justifiy the means in that situation. However, it is always sad to see innocent civilians die for this purpose, I won't argue with that.
Ah, sorry for the misquote, and thanks for correcting me. I think you can still see what I am trying to say. And, as I said before, I do not remotely buy that this is being done for actual reasons of national security, and I am furthermore highly suspicious of anything done in the name of national security anyway.
Oh, your quote was correct. They both said essentiual the same way but in slightly different ways. However, I do believe that this is done for the purposes of national security. Intelliegence assets are very precious (and expensive) and need to be guarded. I understand your mistrust of national securitiy reasons, and that is good. It's good that you have the sense of freedom to be mistrustful, that is. However,I trust our intelligence agencies.
I understand what you are saying with your quotes, but you and I knbow that the first two cxan be interpreted a million ways (in different contexts).
The quote from Einstein shows much wisdom (duh!):-) However, I have to say that sometimes war is necessary. Further, sometimes preemptive actions can be the best choice. WWII tells us that, but then again hindsight is always 20/20.
Oh sorry. didn't intend to make you feel insulted. however, your comment that classified information should be automatically declassified in 5-10 years shows me that you have no experience whatsoever in this subject.
Well, you have to understand how intelligence works. Basically, it builds on itself over many, many years, decades actually. It is entirely plausible that if intelligence from 25 years ago was released then other countries could deduce current capabilities by following the events that occurred after the fact. It's like a stack of cards set up as a pyramid with that one little snippet of information from 25 years ago being a card on the bottom level. When it is removed, then everything else can be figured out.
"Any nation which will sacrifice a little liberty for a little security will get and deserve neither." --Thomas Jefferson
Now, you know you are taking this completely out of context. Do you think that Thomas Jefferson revealed all the strategic and tactical capabilities of the country? Of course not, the government is obligated to provide defense for the country, and that would undermine it. Now, how about these quotes:
They that can give up **essential** liberty to purchase a little **temporary** safety deserve neither liberty or safety. Benjamin Franklin (Emphasis is, obviously, mine)
Freedom without obligation is anarchy. Freedom with obligation is democracy. Earl Riney
If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. Federalist Papers
And a bonus:
Tyrants are always assassinated too late. That is their great excuse. E.M. Cioran
I agree completely. hopefully someone will catch it with MetaModerate

First, there may be millions of protesters, but so what? there are also millions of mentally ill people in the world as well. the number itself is meaningless when talking about the global population. How many people are FOR the war? So what if they are not all marching on the street carrying signs supporting the war. it is probably because they are more mature than that. You vastly underestimate the support for this war.
Second, The reason the UN is not able to come to a consessus is basically because of France, Germany, and Russia. France and Russia both have monetary reasons for not wanting the war there. this is because they sell things to them, they buy oil from them, and because Iraq still owes them a crapload of money! Also, if there is no threat of WMS, then why is France now saying they will provide support in the event that Iraq uses it? that is because the know that they possess it, wake up knucklehead!
third, every effort is made to not hurt civilians! As a matter of fact, every effort is being made not to hurt the Iraqi military forces! We have been warning them via leaflets and radio broadcasts that we do not wish to hurt them and even give them detailed instructions as to how to let us now that they do not wish to fight so they will not be injurred. If you read the news, you'd know that.
Your statement about the Taliban being former allies of the U.S. is crap. They came into power and defeated the people which we were supporting (to push out the Soviets).
Oh, and the crap about a dead kid being a dead kid. what the hell are you talking about? Sadamn has killed masses of children. We all know about the nerve agent shellings, who died? women and children. How about the SCUD missiles he launched in to Israel, and (gasp, a brother) Saudi Arabia? Those were targeted specifically at civilain areas.
I will concede that we made a mistake in helping him build his military power. That was done for a very specific purpose, to give Iran a slap in the face. What he did with that military after the fact was his own choice and we never approved of it.
And please don't throw me your crap about my being some kind of nationalistic robot. i am simply a person much more informed than you are.

Dude, get a grip. they don't have 356 cameras to point in every possible angle. They had no idea that it was gonna even happen, how could they have possibly known where to film?
I think about this problem off and on and I think that this project is conceivable. The key is to break down the software into separate pieces, each utilizing different types of computing. Mixtures of AI and traditional programming can be used to make this a reality.
My idea of the basic input system idea is based on layers: Layer one: the camera(s) two: various neural nets, each designed to filter out specific things. Fo example, one net would id cars (and their relative speeds), another the middle of the road (lanes), another the whole road. Maybe even one to find speed limit signs! and tree: traditional algorithms which intepret the data from the neural net and use it to compute cars location, other cars locations, where the road is, what speed to go, etc etc.
This would allow the surrounding envornemt to be broken down into very simple data structures that traditional Algorithms can handle. I think the key to this problem is to divide and conquer, using the best tools for each part.
It should ot be difficult to train a NN to identify the boundaries of a road in the desert. The info from this can be transformed into 2d space and voila, you got a simplified but accurate view of the cars surroundings. Now just add NNs to id cars and you can use that for collision avboidance. I can go on and on, but you get the idea.
Here's a good one. At my local hospital they used to use X11 apps and xterms for their patient software.
Well, they modernized, guess what they use now? WinXP machines with X11 server software, accesing the exact same X11 app they used before.
Now that's progress!
Well, there are different levels of secure areas, obviously. My bet is that there are areas in the White House where cell phones are not allowed.

That is the way we are going with XFree86 anyhow.

Thank you! I'm so sick of everyone saying Macs are more expensive.
If you look into high-end laptops, Dell's are usually more expensive as well.
I wish that old "Macs are too pricey" line would just go away.
Sure you can pick up a cheap PC system for $350, but you get what you pay for, every single time....

The reason according to Elke Monssen-Engberding, director of the Ministry for Family Affairs: 'It portrays war as the only way to resolve conflicts.'"
Interesting, considering that WWII Germany presented an actual real-life situation where all-out war was clearly the only way to solve the conflict.

One of the projects most suited to the group would be making some processors for missiles and I definately wouldnt be happy about that.
Yunno, not all missiles are offensive. PATRIOT and THAAD come to mind. those missile systems are purely defensive.
