I'm not so sure that biometrics are really a good idea. People have already pointed out various means to thwart the system, i.e. chop off your finger, put a gun to your head. Facial recognition systems have proven so far to be less than reliable. I don't understand how biometrics will make any information more secure than already well established best practices for security.
This trend towards biometrics just seems like a way to make security somewhat brainless. The big problem is that security that is brainless isn't security.
It amazes me to see PDA's that have more total computing power than all of that used to send men to the moon. What do we use it for? Well to play solitaire and mp3's of course! How long before people will be running seti@home and protein folding on these things?
My geek quotient just dropped a couple points though. I just got my blackberry las week, and I thought I was uber-cool. Now I guess I'm just a geek with a wireless PDA:-)
I think the point of the book is simply to be cool and look pretty, which is just fine with me. I have a feeling it will end up being the uber-geek coffee book of choise.
Interestingly enough though, these are some of the images I had in my mind when I first read Neuromancer and Snow Crash. I could theoretically see extending these virtual maps into virtual worlds. Cool stuff IMHO.
Does this mean that it would finally be http://www.goat.sex instead of http://www.goatse.cx? It would truly be the end of an era on slashdot if that happened:-)
I can see where this would be a major help to those that are still running older macs, (beige g3, 604.) Even though the machines are old, linux would probably fly on them, while still maintaining a suprising amount of compatability for Classic MacOS apps. Taking a look at this really makes me wish that wine supported as many applications (though it has been a long time sice I've played with it.)
Where this project will go in the future is the big question. With 10.1 (yes, this is the obligitory "it rocks" comment,) you get the same ammount of Classic MacOS support, with all the modern goddies that you could want.
What's the advantage of 30-50% more anyway? We got slammed with the microsoft tax to the tune of over 50k this year. We are a small manufacturing outfit, and that was over 1/4 of my budget. Now we have to pay that much more for product we will never upgrade to? Hell, I purchase office 2000 and win 2k server licenses, and install office 97 and nt 4. 50% percent more for the right to install products that suck less seems more than a little exhorbitant to me.
I'd really like to put linux on people's desktops, but unfortunatly, I can't see the people- some of whom can barely use a mouse, using linux.
It seems to me that laying off some of your top OS engineers is really stupid. HPIX may not have been the best flavor of unix out there, but it did provide an alternative. I'm really saddened by how many OS's and architechtures ar biting the dust at the moment. Looks like it's gonna be a one chip three OS world in not too long....

Hell, that didn't bother me at all. Kirk used to hook up all the time. My personal beef with voyager was that everything had become *way* too sanitized and PC. I think it's good to see some good ole sexuality in the new series. It's one of the things that gives me hope for Enterprise.
I guess it just comes down to: If you show butts and boobies, people will watch it:-)

I am an electronic musician, and just recently purchased an EOL dual g4 450.
This almost makes me wish I would have been a little more patient. With as much bandwidth as these new mac's will have, one could reasonable expect to be able to master full surround dvd's without even spiking processor usage. I'm glad to see that apple is still innovating on the technical end. It's this type of innovation that reminds me why I use a mac for all things music:-)

cause it sure scares me. If we use nukes- even 'tactical' nuclear weapons- then it's over. WWIII.
Who invented the term 'tactical' nuclear weapon anyway? Someone in need of a big dose of reality.
quote and source follow:
"THE SCALE of the attacks and the loss of life - mostly in New York City's
World Trade Center, but also near Pittsburgh and Washington - ensured that
"no option has been taken off the table," a senior U.S. official told
MSNBC.com. Asked if that included nuclear weapons, one senior official said:
"I said no option is out of the question. That's precisely what I mean.""
The solution to this is really easy enough- Don't buy any cd that you know uses this technology. Ifyou buy one by mistake, return it, and write a letter to the record company telling them exactly why you will never purchase product from them again. I recently went through a similar experience when a flawed copy protection scheme went bad- I could no longer use the software I had purchased legitmately. I had to get a cracked version for a while (which was hassle free btw.)I ended up politely ranting at the CFO of the copy protection software company. Granted the CFO of Time-Warner might not drop you an email, but sooner or later they will drop stupid sh*t like this when they realize that people will not buy a flawed product.
Hmmmm, Jesus wants you to be a sheep and follow orders. Many people are perfectly content being sheeple. "well, if it makesme feel *safer*, then it must be good." Whatever.
I am a personal fan of radical responsibility. If you drive drunk, you pay the consequences. I don't need the gub'ment, MADD, or some bunch of puritans subjugating my *body* to testing just so they can feel safer.
Almost enough to make me go out and buy a shack somewhere out in the forest and hole up for a while until this type of crap blows over;-)
my fav's in no particular order:
Nemesis MUD: Man this was my home away from home for years. There was a test server up and running it a while ago. anyone know where it is?
jump man junior: enough said.
civilization: yup that one too!
wolfenstein, spear of destiny, doom, quake.....
snow brothers nick & tom (god i love mame!)
enough for now.
anyone with nemesis info please email me.
thanks

Hello All. How many of you are from London? I'm from the states and visited the city recently. I was amazed at the sheer amount of cctv cameras on street corners, in the tube, shops, even in fscking pubs! It really got me thinking. At the company where I work, we have no less than 16 cctv cameras monitoring our entire workforce, and the area surrounding our building. Almost every other company in this area does the same. Credit card company's monitor how much we spend, what stores we spend it at. They even monitor our movements. The same situation exists with our fun to use debit cards. Companies like DoubleClick already monitor most of the less technically savy. Companies buy & sell our online habits all the time. Someone posted above that it isn't big brother that is going to take our privacy away, but mr. moneybags. That person was correct. Except that they (yes, *them*) have already done it. Our privacy has been slowly and anonymously chipped away since the end of world war two. I hate to say it but I suspect that this battle was lost long ago, without anyone noticing. This time the revolution *was not* televised.
1.) Having your website posted on Slashdot. The most effective DoS know to mankind.
Why would they want to make another one after Disney's Black Hole? That was the worst movie ever!
just in case you never saw the movie:
