Yeah. I agree totally. If you still believe the hype, you need to see a shrink.
Also, is there even an Amiga to buy Kickstart ROMS from anymore? Whould a nextgen Amiga be impossible due to red tape?
Yeah, I was just as depressed as you all when I found out there would be no Amiga workstations. This iWin hoax isn't a very good way to handle the letdown.
Yeah, that would be a good reason, but that was never mentioned. One minute, it's a cool Amiga compatable machine, next it's a bitchin' Linux workstation. You know, it's just odd. And you would have a difficult time emulation the Amiga at a kernel level, would it be smarter just to do a VMWare thing?
Really, we can talk about what would have been smarter, and what would work better, but the bottom line is, this smells too much like a hoax for me to waste that much time on it.
When it ceases to be vaporware, I will be happy in insert my foot in my mouth, but until then, can we please assume it's a fake until something real comes out of this?
Puh-leeze. I wouldn't believe it for a second. Even Squid ( Amiga Rumour Mill ) thinks it's bull.
The terminology doesn't match up with real technology. If this thing really existed, it would be very popular. Oh yeah, and the HTML was done by the "CEO" of the company. What it seems to me they're doing is taking the rumours flying around (Linux Kernels, New Boxes) and creating a hoax. Turning it into the iMac of Amigas. And if you send money? theyWin.
And then, of course, you have to wonder about the "new" distro they're creating. What would the point be? RedHat'sRough Cuts CD has had a fully fuctional Amiga distro for quite a while. It would be stupid to create another distro to do the exact same job of another one already much more accepted.
I think the AC poster was being a wee bit sarcastic, Robin.
I've had to reboot a Linux machine many times before because of failures.
On occasion, my sound card will die, and all programs trying to use it will report it's already being used.
My X server (XFree86) occasionally crashes while starting and won't let me switch over to a virtual console. On my RedHat 6.0 box, I have some problems with random lock-ups.
XMame (SVGAlib) will nix your display under text mode under quite a few video games. Sometimes even because of a bad command line.
So, badly designed programs would be happy to crash your system. Linux isn't just the kernel.
You see, the purpose of creating this kind of pnmonic device is to link SDMI to Sodemy hence creating a kind of disgust in the potential user of SDMI tech.
I realize that CPU speed are supposed to double after a given amount of time.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but chip speed have a limit to them. For example, right now, speeds are held back by the material they're made from, copper and silicon. Wouldn't it be true that the fastest a chip could ever go would be a chip made from a couple of thosand atoms, with the electrical impulses in the chip running at the speed of light? Which brings up a question as to how close we are to the limit.
And once we hit that limit, would the only way to boost performance be to create paralell processing units?
So, I guess, really, what I'm trying to say is...
...WHEN CAN WE USE BEOWULF ON IT!?!?!
( OK, maybe that's not what I wanted to say. Maybe something along the lines of "When will we see any of this cool nanotech which seems to exist...but not really." There, that's better. )
What the hell kind of manifesto is that? That's the same thing that *every* non-profit organization is ultimatly supposed to be doing.
Don't get me wrong, I like Red Hat. I like their business methods. I even like the products. The problem is that this is just a Bad Thing. I have a religiously held belief that a for-profit organization shouldn't have full rule and rein over a non-profit one.
I think a much better solution would be to put the money back into the community. There are groups that would love to have some real funding. Debian and the FSF, to name a couple.
Also, to any tax-minded types, wouldn't this make for a nice loophole? You move $1,000,000 to your non-profit group, and now it's non-taxable. Or even have your company "lose" money while your non-profit group "gains" it?
Or do I just have my head firmly planted up my ass?
...and with that he utterly forgot what he was trying to say.
Does anyone remember the AK47 ban? The law said guns could not be sold as AK47s. With that, along came the AK48s and the AK57s. In any law, there is a loophole. In this case, a loophole is defined as any action which violates the spirit of the law and not the wording.
The US does this and continues to do this everyday. I don't see how this nation could function if the government didn't exploit holes in the law governing themselves.
But, the problem is not the international laws we have made, the problem is that the US is intent on playing big-brother/mediator/faux protagonist in everything it does. I think this stems from the false notion that the US is the last great super-power. The truth is that countries govern themselves well or they fall to someone who does it better.
So, dear Slashdotter, the US in doing dastardly deeds, indefinitly, and there's nothing you can do about it. Sorry.
Yeah, "What happens to the weapons development during peacetime?" seems like a valid question.
Well the answer is pretty simple. Obviously, they don't stop. Peacetime is only a padding between wartimes and the best way to make sure your enemy doesn't defeat you at the next go `round is to be practicing in the off-season. Does anyone here honestly believe that with the nuclear club opening up as much as it has in the recent years that any nation in its right mind would stop Weapon and Anti-Weapon development?
I, for one, don't think so.
A much more valid topic of debate is whether or not the media coverage just drops off or if the information is no longer submitted for public consumption.
Can you tell I'm excited? Here's the fourm to say what I need to say. FUCK YOUR ENCRYPTION! Does anyone remember when we thought this was impossible, and that even if it weren't, it would need a hardware decoder? Well, the Linux-DVD team has proven them all wrong.
Oh, and any posts about the "ethics" of this are pointless to say the least. When you pay for a DVD, you pay for the right to watch it, and enjoy it. Should you be penalized if you aren't using Windows to view it?
I love you Tux, I love you Linux-DVD team, I love you Slashdot.
By the way, I heard about people using their DVD drives under Linux (for data DVDs) back in Janurary. I never thought I would see the Matrix playing in an X-Window.
LASIK vision correction has only been around for a bit. I've heard great things, and occasionally a terrible thing or two. The procedure is no more dangerous than, say, having your appendix taken out. As a matter of fact, "Weird Al" Yankovic recently had his eyes zapped (and was quite happy with it). I got the chance to watch an operation preformed on a woman. It doesn't seem to be for the faint of heart. Her eyes were taped (to keep her from blinking) and she kept repeating "There's something wrong with my eyes" the whole time. She turned out fine. Also, chance of relapse into poor vision is slim.
In my area (Virginia Beach), LASIK is done on the cheap, which makes me wonder how much of a guniea pig you really are when you have this done.
But, the bottom line is, if you're the daring sort and have the $500 - $2,000 (per eye) to blow, go for it. With a little luck, you'll turn out better than you were before. But, be warned, problems do occur, and you may want to hold off on the procedure for another year or two.
Take a look at this list, not exactly national security here. If echelon does exist I'm sure its busy scanning for words that would be a lot more trivial/classified than 'HILLARY BILL CLINTON GORE.'
I couldn't possibly agree more. This sounds like either a hoax or heavy paranoia. One theroy I do buy it a theroy first in 2600 which was that the NSA monitors public IRC. This was brought up by Agent Steal whom may be bullsh*tting about it.
But, back on topic, the list does seem pretty superficial and I would wonder where words like ASSASSINATE would come into play (which I don't see on the list). So, for now:
FBI is a TERRORIST TASK FORCE which makes OLIVER NORTH BOMB.
Have fun guys with this one, guys.

Apple has always has a big influence in academic centers, mostly in primary and college learning areas (strangly, in Virginia, I haven't see very many Macintoshes in High Schools).
But, I really don't think they've smashed their PR. Apple has made themselves far more visable then they were a few short years ago. Frankly, if it wasn't for their ride of the PR crest, I don't think we really would have heard much about this. If we did, I don't think many of us would have cared.

If you think this is unfair, you should contact malda@slashdot.org.
Let me get this straight, you want everyone to E-Mail Rob and tell him that his method of temp-banning is unfair?
Forget it.
I don't think you understand how difficult it is to run a forum like this and how consuming it is (both economically and time-wise). To come into a fourm and ask for the floodgates to open into Malda's mailbox is a stupid, juvenile thing to do.

Apple has had problems for a while now. I remember a time where there was actually a question as to if you used a PC or not.
This being said, Apple isn't like Amiga. The Amiga is now dead-ish because of horrible management. In this [Apple's] case it looks like a problem of the technology catergory.
I still don't like the way they are handling it. Apple has done well with a 5% (+/-) market share. I truly think the management should be applauded for their efforts. But, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I agree. The content value is actually negative. Some may argue this is a good thing.
What exactly is the big deal about speeds in the GHz? May be a mile stone, but it's only logical progression.
Light doesn't move at an infinite speed, therefore the number of instructions executed could not be infinite as well.
Or, at least that what my "common sense" says.

The Amiga, as I recall, was a hardware *and* software combo.
To GPL the Amiga, you would have to GPL the whole she-bang.
A lot of talk about making the PLEB project's boards GPL has been going around (we got feedback from RMS about it).
The bottom line is that the GPL is not made for hardware. Period.
Somebody enlighten me. What is M-x Spook?
