  1. a whine or two... on IBM Makes Firefox Its Corporate Browser · · Score: 1

I strongly urge Firefox use here at work and most people use it, but the pres. of the company hates it so that's that...at least I got him on IE8, which he resisted for a long time...."I'd better not lose all my favorites when you do the upgrade..." My biggest peeve with Firefox is that every point release seemed to break all your extensions, although it does seem to be a little better about that lately.

But you only needed a forklift for the mainframe itself, usually the terminals stayed put. Migrating to Win7 from XP pretty much demands a client hardware refresh along with whatever ERP/WMS/CRM bloatware you're upgrading, so you might want to order an extra forklift for moving the pallets of desktops boxes that will be delivered. Of course, any thin-client+VM visionaries are a leg up.

FZ always tried to keep what he called "conceptual continuity" in his work. If you listen to his progression throughout the years, that phrase sort of makes sense. He was also a master at taking disparate tracks (from several different songs), and creating fresh material without playing a single new note.

One of FZ's many talents as a composer and musician was his ability to write and perform in every musical genre. His stuff ranges from classical to funk, jazz to plain rock, weirdness to well, just more weirdness. I've always said that if I had to be stranded on a deserted island for the rest of my life with only one artist's music, it would be Zappa.

Poster child here for what you have described...I freelanced for almost 9 years after the last company I worked for closed (the owners cashed in and retired to a golf course in FL). I didn't get rich, but I was happy. Things started slowing down a couple of years ago, and after reading the tea leaves I got a real job as a working (as in, I do real work, like coding) IT Manager for one of my former clients. Having said all that, I do not have any certs beyond a degree; just 25+ years of solid experience with business systems. I can't tell you how many people in my programming classes were clueless yet somehow managed to graduate, and this was in the early 80's! I guess not much has changed.

This isn't to say that Islam is logical - no religion is. But it is quite internally consistent, so long as you stick to the framework of its axioms. There is considerably less wiggle room there than there is in Christianity.

Substitute the word "Scientology" for "Islam" and your statements still hold true.

  24. Re:Yet another legal solution to a technical probl on US House Passes Ban On Caller ID Spoofing · · Score: 1

Using ANI (Billing Number) for all calls would probably be a bad idea. Say you're calling someone you have a business relationship with from your phone at work (technology type doesn't matter here). If billing number was the only thing available, every single call from your company would show up with the same number. Probably your main line that goes to a receptionist. In some situations this is what people want (telemarketers for instance) but in what many view as more legitimate business it would be annoying.

I'd hate it if every time various vendors that I have multiple account managers called my cell phone it just said "AT&T employee" etc. I like knowing who I'm going to be talking to.

Also, this completely ignores some of the other valid reasons for setting a caller ID value that most people outside of the telecom industry probably aren't aware of or care much about. Let's just say it's very useful for testing purposes and it's a great way to send a small amount of data to the entity you're calling if you're not using something like UUI.

Customers should be allowed to choose whether their billing (or "main") number is used for outbound caller id, or the individual lines. My company has a plethora of analog lines and none of the carriers we''ve had (AT&T, Verizon, and most recently Broadview) seem to have that capability. In our situation, we don't want people calling (or even knowing about) those 'other' numbers. We are not telemarketers, but we do contact our customers on a regular basis for other reasons besides trying to sell them more stuff.

Please be assured that SCE is committed to continue the support for previously sold models that have the "Install Other OS" feature and that this feature will not be disabled in future firmware releases. -Geoff
