  1. Hrm.. on Techies Saying No To College · · Score: 1

What about the stuff your learn in post-secondary that does NOT relate directly to your 'career', but round out your skills and ability to adapt to different situations (problem solve) and shift your focus if you burn out in your primary focus?

How many people stick to one 'career' anymore?

  2. Selling your soul vs making a living.. on Micropayment Wars Are Over... PayPal Wins? · · Score: 2

Hmm.. I dont see this as a big risk. Sure there are folks out there that will get some bucks through a system like this, and perhaps it will alter their 'creation' (whatever it may be), but if that alteration is for the worse (predictable) they will most likely fade away, if that change is pleasing to their audience (whoever that may be) more power to them..

I think most 'creative' people do some work for ca$h, and usually have something going on the side just for fun.. I don't see how this would change that. I know that part of the charm of something you create without any monetary pay-back, is that you dont have to answer to anyone.

--OK.. Did I get enough 'quotes' and (parentheses) in there?

  7. Its Slashdot Proof! on Ian Clarke of Freenet Intereview · · Score: 2

Freenet is actually much more efficient than the Web in the way it distributes information. With the Web, if a hundred people in Europe request the same document in America, that will travel under the Atlantic a hundred times. With Freenet it will only travel under once or twice. And then a copy will be stored locally in Europe, where it can be distributed to the other ninety-nine or ninety-eight people requesting it.

this would solve the slashdot effect for content access overload, because it could be cached all over.. So slightly offtopic, Has SlashDot ever considered caching, or mirroring sites they point to? At least the first page, until freenet takes over?

  13. 'Meaningful' info? on More Web Site User Data Gathering Revealed · · Score: 1
So the tracking is easier to do, and easier to analyze, and there is more of it, and it is more meaningful; Do you honestly think your bank, the telephone company, and the credit agencies aren't selling your spending habits to marketers?

That concerns me much more than online tracking - I need to give accurate personal info to the Credit Card companies, I have no real reason to give accurate personal info online. So just because the tracking is easy online, and there is more info, I hardly think that means it is more meaningfull..

I know this is the kind of thing that is impossible to determine, but I'm curious what the percentage of online info given (filled out forms etc) is accurate or usefull. I'm sure slashdot readers have a higher percentage of not giving personal info online, but of overall web-users (that constant stream of newbies), how many feel the need to give true personal info when asked by some market-droid site looking for that big info-goldrush?

As far as super-market cards go, some of the names I have them registered under are:
    1. Don T. Botherme
    1. Anita Prawduct

Hooboy! How many times have I wished my computers had an 'animate' button - These tools have been in use for a long time, All those shows use some variety of software to finish up the show -That certainly doesn't mean they don't still need a whole team of animators, clean up artists, etc, etc..

The computer on its own is not going to do sweet fuck-all. And you can STILL tell the difference between a project with a good team of artists, and one where they thought maybe the computer could do more. And believe you me, a LOT of effort still has to go into 'good' animation (come to think of it, even 'bad' animation takes a hell of a lot of effort).

A package of tools to scan or shoot drawings, composite them, with FX, etc and out put for film or video -decent software, but I prefer 'USAnimation' by toonboom, because it is vector-based. You scan your original art in, and it is converted to vectors for ink & paint, and compositing - The cool thing about this is that its not resolution dependent, you can take your original work and output to a small flash-vector file, or to a huge IMAX size film frame, without getting pixelization.
