    Uh.. Couldnt they have figured this out to begin with by just looking at theRazorFish site? I know some people like them, but those seventies color schemes just don't do it for me..

    (yeah, yeah, I know my site looks like a fast food reject.. Thats the point! don't you get it? Its Iron-o-riffic!(TM)..Whatever...)

    That Idrema box looks like so many other psuedo-futuristic modern gadget designs, like some sleek underwater device, or a handy tray to keep your marble collection in.. What I want to see is some good-old-fashioned future noir design in some settop boxes.. Something more sid mead/bladerunnerish. Something that looks a little more dangerous.

    Uh, yeah, but I'd take one in a pinch..

    Wow. This would bring a tear to the eye of an old KGB flak.. It sounds so wholesome, so godamn HEALTHY - Its good to know that someone is out there *cleansing* info. Now I *know* I can trust whatever I read online. No more dirty info!

    By use of a remote laser or microwave source, beamed energy can be directed toward a space sail. In space, the laser or microwave source may be provided by a satellite or other type of spacecraft.

    ..and the craft providing the laser or microwave source will us space sails powered by another satellite or other type of spacecraft, which in turn will be powered by another satellite or.. Etc etc..

    I can just picture a long chain of space sail crafts providing energy to one another and stretching from earth to destination.. Watch out for them meteors!

    The bad side I see- School system shoveling money into the upgrade hole, lame educational programs that the 'teacher' runs and sits back for 45 minutes, Mac/Pc/*nix holy wars..

    "We have no evidence that stands up under scrutiny," Healy says, "that computer education is helpful for learning in children under the fourth grade."

    ..Um.. except maybe learning about computers? I can kind of see the point to this stuff, a computer is not a good substitute for a decent human teacher, but why would you want to keep kids away from computers?

    Mm. -Minimally invasive surgery.. Little bots crawling around in my gut.. Call me a ludite, but I'm not sure how much faith I would place in a scheme like this - how does the failsafe work? Imagine them programed by a certain nameless favorite from the Pacific Northwest.. "Dr! Quick.. Reboot the Nano-bots! We're getting the blue foam of death" as the little bots get stuck in a endless loop.

    I completely agree with you, however: From what I've heard M$ is working closely with the game developers to ensure that the talent can make the games for the market. The Playstation II sounds like it is notoriously difficult to develop for, so It will be interesting to see how this shakes up - I'm happy with a cheap PC and M.A.M.E. so obviously I'm more interested in gameplay than graphics.

    So you get a smart gene "installed" in your child- Who owns it? I was just reading this scary story at Wired News about the Monsanto/Farmer sue-sounter-sue situation. Supposedly some Monsanto-patented genes made it into his field- They accuse him of stealing, and he counter-sues because the genes made it into his crop without his knowledge or consent. -Freaky stuff. Will you have to pay a yearly licensing fee for some of you're childrens genes? What if you didn't want those genes there in the first place? How do you compartmentalize genetic material?

    In tests, the "Doogie" mice significantly outperformed genetically unmodified mice in such tasks as running mazes, recognizing objects in their environment, and solving such problems as how to get themselves out of a pool of water and up onto a pedestal.

    When I haven't been drinking heavily, I can allready do all these tasks to a moderate degree...Bring on the wings and gills! Lets get Jiggy with this genetic engineering!

    yup. I think this is a coincidence. I think it has more to do with the progress that has been made with Linux in terms of friendly install, improved driver support, lots of good software. You now have distro's that will install very easily on most any machine, and a good gui that the average user can grasp and run without any real knowledge of a CLI..

    As long as a big shiny box with a single CD rattling around inside sells better than a single CD, There will be no reason for M$ and others to change.. Perhaps as more people buy software online, and vendors change their licenses (You are *NOT ALLOWED* to own an install CD of this product) This will change- But then again maybe not- I've seen a lot of "Internet in a box" packages at the shops- Big shiny boxes with a CD rattling around inside.

    Put this puppy in a digital camera and you would have something you could really travel with. Most photographers would have no problem spending $500 on that much storage- High-rez uncompressed photos galore!.. And for the average consumer, you could go crazy with snapshots over a long vacation in that much space. Now we just need the speed to get rid of latency, a simple yet powerful cataloging system and a 30 -year battery.

    I have not used the iPAQ -The idea of color and MP3 playback appeals to the gadget freak in me.. but when it comes down to straight-ahead useability I love my old Palm Pilot 5000. I traded a fourteen inch monitor and a SCSI case for it a few years ago. The UI is simple as pie (good for handheld)and customisable.

    There is no way that a Pilot 5000 will stand up to a Pocket PC in terms of sheer computational muscle, but it doesnt need to. A couple of AAA batteries last me months of daily use- I've put in a two meg upgrade card, which is more that enough for the 14 or so websites I browse daily with avantgo.

    I can read/answer email, keep phone numbers,appointments, play games - etc. I dont even miss the backlight on this old device. When it comes to fancy colour graphics, and video playback -Im happy to use my Desktop box or Laptop. I'm not ready to trade in 2 months of battery life for 6-8 hours. This is especially true if the device offers MP3 playback, because I would want to be able to use it as a walkman throughout the day at work, and would like to be able to travel with it without having to plug-in daily to recharge.

    Wow. Thats anti-climactic. Maybe I'm just being picky, but I think the color-scheme for these shots could have been better, and I understand that they are working on user-friendly design - But I was hoping for a bit more flash. These look very flat, and unfortunately very "Windows"..

    -Sure you can make a Unix Sysadmin character compelling - to the right audience.. I'm enjoying "The Cuckoo's Egg" by Cliff Stoll right now.. But I don't imagine a lot of TeleTubbies fans would dig it..

    I remember not too long ago 3 of Stephensons books were on the top ten selling scifi list - Cryptonomicon, Snow Crash, and The Diamond Age- So he's doing something right.. I know I look forward to the new book.

    Get yer top level domains -$500 bucks.. buy now.. What? contract? services? Aw yeah we'll work all that out in the future..

    Still.. $500 bucks for a Top Level Domain.. Who's not up for that?

    Hmm.. Well if I can get someone to pay me for a service or product that they feel is important in their life, whose fault is that - The customer, the seller, or 'society'..

    I dont think there is a direct link from technology to consumption/leased life, other than technology used to drive the consumptive desire that has always been there..

    I for one just sold a depeeled banana online (seriously) from my website, so I must say I'm feeling pretty good about capitalism.. For every doubt there is a product -god bless the market economy.
