    2 megs a frame x 24 = 48 megs a second/2,880 megs a minute

    - so unless this film is just over 17 minutes long, it must be compressed- I'm just wondering what kind of compression they are using, and what the hit to quality is like - Unless my math is way off..

  4. Innovation/Refinement- on Systems Research Is Dead? · · Score: 2

Ok -I'll admit 'innovation' sounds more exciting, but it seems to me that what the general public gets excited about is the refinement of 'new' technologies -MP3, Voice over IP, desktop PC with simple UI's... In general people want things that they can use simply -this is MS's big 'innovation' -'refinement' of existing technology-

I hardly think that this means the art of research is gone- there will always be wild-eyed geniuses that create things that are truely new, just for the love of it (not the 'market' of it). This is the way it has always been.

has anyone seen a demo of any Crusoe based devices? At what cost does that battery life come? I sure would love it if my laptop ran more than a couple of hours on a full charge, but I have a hard time giving up speed - so. How fast does that chip go?

  9. 350 megs @ 56K? on Video Shrinks With MP4 · · Score: 2

Until there are cross platform players and encoders I don't see it making each inroads, and there still are some compression issues (but then again, a 128kb/s MP3 wacks out music's treble and bass pretty badly too and that hasn't slowed down its acceptance).

In general people will choose convenience over quality to a certain threshold. The main problem here is that an hours worth of MP4 video (350 megs) is not something many people would want to attempt on a slow net connection - I imagine this would then be most usefull for distribution of small clips, or large clips on CD/DVD.

  13. Beware. on Microsoft Releases First X-Box Screens · · Score: 2

My brother is a project manager for a Game Developer- he just had a meeting with the "evil empire" last week to pitch a project for the Xbox- It sounds like they have some definate advantages. Apparently the PS2 is *not nice* to develop for, and they have a ways to go before the games will live up to all the hype- One of the major problems is that (apparently) PS2 has NO antialiasing capability.. I find this hard to believe, but from what he was saying a lot of the PS2 stuff looked "worse" than the dreamcast. If this is the case, the PS2 may not be the console champ it looked like it would be.

Since the Xbox is just a PC box, MS has a lot of muscle to get PC games ported (very simple) to the Xbox as well as creating new games, and Dreamcast now has the Playstation emulator, so there goes the backwards compatibility argument for the PS2. Apparently no console has maintained market lead when jumping to next generation - it'll be interesting to see how this all shakes out.

Everytime people at work want faster machines, they ask "can't we just put more ram in it?".. I have to explain that doubling the ram in that p100 running win95 is just not going to double their performance..

That said, I have one reason to use over 128 megs of ram -AfterEffects. I use AfterEffects daily, and it uses a 'ram preview' function that stores as much of your video comp in a ram buffer as possible, then lets you view it playing back smoothly with sound - This is such an important tool to me at work, my G3 there has 768 megs. 18. Illegal FileSharing! on Seagram Declares War On Napster · · Score: 5

I have discovered a massive conduit for stolen intellectual material. They call it 'email', but beneath it's innocuous sounding name hides a great evil. As I write this, there are potentially gigs and gigs of illegal material flowing all around the world.. entire chapters of books, song lyrics, and the misuse of corporate trademarks are all taking place - but that's not the worst of it! Using a technology called "attachments" actual songs, TV shows, and stolen software can be exchanged along with the plain-text.

I have done a little research, and it appears that the major ring-leaders are a company going by the name of 'MicroSoft' with their 'hotmail' service (even in the name they are brazen about the 'hot' or 'stolen' nature of the contents!) and a company that goes by the name of 'Time/Warner/AOL' operating under the alias 'Netscape Webmail' (Which I assume relates to the web of lies and trickery that the service enables).. I have heard that there may be some other software that make use of this 'email' technology, but I think we have to go after the biggest most brazen CopyRight Theft Enablersto send a message to the internet community at large: 'Sharing is bad! I'm actually a bit suprised that this is 'newsworthy'.. I would think that by now a lot of homes should be built with some sort of consideration toward a high speed connection - apparently this is not the case.

According to Jo Chapman, director of surveys at the National Association of Home Builders, only 5 percent of new homes come with "structured" wiring, the fatter in-home pipe needed to get the most from broadband service.

And just how 'fat' are those pipes anyways? I always thought that if I built a house I would do the basic ethernet cabling, but I would also put in some sort of open-ducting in the walls so that 'fatter' cable for other purposes could be run from room to room fairly simply in the future.
