THis guy has produced a great atx shutdown that will time out (adjustable) the time between when you kill your ignition and when it sends a "push power button" signal to the mobo. Much easier than a software script, plus you can buy them from him for around $20. Good luck!
I would reccomend you take a look at http://www.mp3car.com message boards, there is more information there than you can shake a stick at on heating and cooling issues. Many people have had problems with tempature extremes on their boards. The problem does not seem to be with the exreme tempatures themselves, but rather with the fact that cars heat up/cool down quickly and often.
It is a great idea to use plenty of fans if possible, but even cooler (pun intended) is to use you car's body as a giant heat sink for your power supply/chip. Should't be too hard to be creative in car setups, there is lots of innovation to be made. Check the forums on mp3 car to see some good examples.
The giant squid is a carnivorous mollusk with a beak-like mouth strong enough to cut through a steel cable and its eyes are the largest in the animal kingdom -- growing up to 45 centimeters (18 inches) wide.
I'm not a marine biologist, but what do you suppose giant squid need to bite through that is "as strong as a steel cable?" Unless they prey on submarines, I can't imagine any sea critter that has a shell that tough!
Be that as it may, I submit that a "burned grease trap" smells better than burned diesel. And remarkably better that the smell of a scorched planet from diesel emissions.
(I know this is not emission free, but it *is* a step in the right direction. If I had a diesel car I would be sending money *right now.*)
Save the Whales Save the whales Oh, funky momma, save the whales Yeah, Save the whales You just got to save the whales but believe me when I tell you, Kill the seals
For any Tinfoil hat types out there worried about the NYT registration I will gladly summarise the "article" for you
From the New York Times:
Earlier this month a bunch of really important advertisers in our newspaper had a meeting. According to several people close to the talks, these companies have now invented a new wireless standard called "802.11" The big companies are very proud of their invention, calling it "the next really really big thing (tm)"
While they realize there are many compatitibility issues that need to be worked out, executives from all the major advertisers agree that by Q4 of 2009 they will be rolling out preliminary test programs in Bumfark, South Dakota and the 'Pendelton Hills' Starbucks in Pendelton Oregon. This test program will only allow for compatibility with 3 brands of cell phones and one PDA, but all of the companies suspect that they will be able to offer service to their propriatary hardware within several years of a sucessful test program.
When asked if the meeting attendees had ever heard of a grassroots open source movement around 802.11, the spokesperson said: "huh?"
I'm currently considering something similar. The hardest part I've found is finding the right job. Why would a company look into canidates from overseas when there are so many availible locally? Definatly not easier to interview non-local canidates. So do you just take that leap of faith, spend a bunch of money to move there and then look for something when you land?
As I recall from when I lived in Germany as a high school student, in order to keep his work visa, my dad had to go into immigration and basically prove that he was the only one qualified to do his job. (i.e. no German could do the job that he was doing, therefore he was not competing with German citizens for the position he was doing) Is this common in European Countries?
Of course *were* someone to do this, they would have to be pretty careful... It is not hard to look at the fax's header and trace you company name-phone #
Jebus christo! Really, give me a break! You are the worst kind of troll slashdot has. Someone goes and does something that is pretty cool, and you demand it be 100% geek buzword compliant, runs Linux, have a T-1 speed wireless connection, Jolt soda cooler, hydrogen fuel cells, and night vision. Give me a $@#$$ break!!!
What this guy did is more than you have done to your POS, so cut him some slack, unless you can make the Uber-smallpenis-mobile you have described in your post. Then you have every right to say his mod is "more like stupidity," but until then don't knock others creativity!
This guy is a regular over at www.mp3car.com forums. You can check out the progress of his install if you root around a little bit.
Actually, if anyone is planning a car install, this is the best site on the internet for all things "carputer" related. They have a TON of information about how Power supplies, touchscreens, inverters, and all the rest work.
And really, all you people who post "thats just what we need, someone watching DVDs while driving" can @#$% off. I think a lot of people are jelous they don't have the skill to build something like this themselves, and would rather rip on people that do. Of course there is a safe and unsafe way to use these, just like cell phones and eating fast food. But that is just my 2 cents.
So I've seen your website, and I have a quesion: How do you market you product? I mean, what draws people to host there and why? I know you likely can't disclose who your customers are, but how do they find you? You say that your customers are legitimate, well, what kind of organization uses your service? I'm not trying to be offensive, just curious.
Additionaly, do you activly seek out customers or is it just word of mouth? And of course, the question on everyone's mind.... have you marketed your service to P2P programs?
cool that you guys are involved in the discussion here....
I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is the perfect place for a centralized server for filesharing programs. Any thoughts on why this has not happened yet?
For example, why does Audiogalaxy cower at the RIAA instead of just moving to Sealand?
I think someone mentioned KaZZa (or however you spell it) was based overseas, is this true?
This is why I choose to wear whatever I feel like. I am an anti-anti advertisment advertisment!!! This way I can wear whatever I feel like and I'm still be true to my personal advertiser philosophy.
I say this in jest, but it really is true. I used to have long hair, cut it off not because of the statement it would make, but more the statement it would *not* make. Unless you had long hair (as a man) you would not believe how differntly you are treated. Deep down, I just did it for my own reasons, but everyone had their own theory on why I did it. It's the anti-statement statement!
Reminds me of the discussion on Slashdot the other day about copyrighting a "silent" musical piece
Boy, do I feel sorry for these people. I used to work for a promotional marketing company (who would subcontract to do these kinds of promotions), and this is some of the hardest work you can imagine. People are downright MEAN to people who do this kind of work, and $100 a day would not be enough to get me to do it!
You think being beat up is unrealistic? How about taking insults all day about how much cooler Dreamcast, xbox, is? How about the snotty kid who wants to play for hours? Good luck to these people, they will need it!!!
I noticed this the other day on Kuro5hin too. In the discussion someone brought up an interesting point that I have wondered about as well; Why not just move the centeralized servers offshore to a data haven like SeaLand?
I thought it might be an ethics issue, I mean, what company would advertise on something so blatently illegal? Then I remembered that AG bundled Gator and other spyware! Doh!
Anyway, why not move it offshore? Isn't this the reason datahavens exist? I would think the folks from SeaLand would be falling all over themselves to get Audiogalaxy as a client. The publicity alone would be better than any advertising they could possibly buy.
Democrats don't know the answers, Republicans don't know the questions.

Those who believe there are two types of people in the world, and those who don't.

What the heck is a "CD?" Is that like one of those old "LP" thingies grandpa is always rambling about?
And I would also be assured you were not stupid, had you been man enough to try and flame me from you own account anom cow...
Rock super-stardom, here I come!

Ahhhhhhh good point. But why not base your operation out of Nassau, host your server(s) on Sealand, and keep your $$$ in a Swiss Bank?
