IANAL but I'm pretty sure these clauses are difficult to enforce as they can be considered more-or-less unconscionable contracts. They are also specifically invalid in some states (definitely California, probably others).
If GP is playing a lot, halfway to max in a week isn't too shallow of a grind. There's been a weekend in there, so we could say easily 40 hours of playtime (though that would be quite a lot of playing). Grind generally gets steeper as you approach max level so he likely wouldn't be more than 20% to max or so depending on the curve. Really bad napkin math: 40*5=200. 200 hours of someone playing casually (4 hours per day let's say?) would be close to 2 months to get to max level. If we go a little conservative and assume our intrepid friend has only played 20 hours this week that would still be something like 4-5 weeks to get to max level.
Just eyeballing it that seems somewhere in the normal range for modern MMO's.
Anecdote: I actually obtained an amateur radio license when I was 8 or 9.
It was the (now deprecated) entry-level 'Novice' class license which required a small basic theory exam and a 5 WPM morse-code exam. Unfortunately I wasn't really interested in it at the time (I just did it because my dad was doing it at the time) and never did anything with it aside from hopping on to one of the morse-code-only bands once or twice and try to figure out what people were saying.
Most universities have a GE requirement for a course in basic computer usage that goes over spreadsheets, word processing, how to navigate in Windows etc. etc. This is not 'computer science', but generally considered very useful information. Most kids will not be going into computer science as a career, but pretty much everyone will need to know word processing and spreadsheets to some extent, so I do not feel that a quick introduction to these tools would be a bad idea for any student in high school.
Since these kids are being home-schooled they have the option to take courses in what interests them that may not be offered in public school. If they have a strong interest in computers then maybe they should take a course in computational math or algorithm development or whatever, but if they have no interest in it then that stuff is not really going to be useful down the road. You also do not want to just throw kids into deep science without giving them something they can work with to spark some interest. Most kids who exhibit computer-nerdly leanings would have a lot more fun with something like an intro to programming course rather than a course in computer science theory. Programming or something else a little hands-on would also cultivate more interest in the field than something they would see as just another math course.
John Connor - the last best hope of mankind - performed this feat in Terminator 2. It was probably a little simplified for the sake of theatrics though.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the Donald and the W would score much higher on an IQ test than you give them credit for. The factors that cause you to believe they are not 'smart' are probably due more to personality than actual on-paper intelligence.
They're not all BS lawsuits. For example they also sued many search engine spamming websites that were just scraping content from other sites and trying to make money with other peoples content. Righthaven should just concentrate on those ones.
Try not to be such a dickhead in the future, okay?
GP is not "being a dickhead". He is raising some legitimate doubts on the authenticity of the story. It doesn't seem to make sense to me either, and I will reserve judgment until we actually get a third-party source to confirm that there really was an actual raid on this dude's house.
Not to be negative, because your MA of choice does sound interesting...but here is some perspective: I am 6'2" 220lbs, so to mimic the size discrepancy of someone my size vs. someone who is 5'4" 120lbs., my attacker would have to be roughly 7' 4" tall and weigh somewhere close to 380 pounds...imagine someone that monstrously huge trying to rape you. Good luck.
Just knowing that (for example) you can cause damage to an attacker's vital areas easily doesn't help that much if you haven't practiced the technique thoroughly. Even years of training can only prepare you to be comfortable in a few situations, and maybe somewhat familiar with a few others. Being able to do what a lot of MA proponents claim - adapt to any situation to defend yourself from attack effectively - is virtually impossible, even for highly trained and skilled individuals.
If you dedicate yourself to MA at a professional level (e.g. MMA fighters, Jet Li) then you'll definitely have an advantage against ordinary violent offenders who are just running around out there, but even if you study a 'non-sport' MA, or self-defense in general, without a LOT (read: thousands of hours) of study, training and conditioning your advantages will not be very significant. Most of the advantages someone will have from low/moderate MA training will be negated by an attacker's physical or situational advantages.
This post (though raising some interesting points) highlights some common misconceptions about martial arts. Martial arts (and fighting in general) are not magical. Just because you have "studied" some martial arts - fighting styles, techniques, conditioning, whatever - does not mean you will be equipped to defend yourself in a real-life scenario. Martial arts training is especially weak in situations where the victim has an extreme disadvantage, and when life is on the line. Most martial arts (including Judo, mentioned above) are primarily only valid in sport situations, where ground rules are laid out and the combatants know (at least roughly) what the other person is capable of doing/allowed to do.
If a 120 pound woman who has trained in some kind of standard martial arts (let's say jiu-jitsu and kickboxing) consistently for 10 years (a LONG TIME) is attacked by a 220 pound potential rapist who has no martial arts training outside of the occasional bar fight, my money is going on the rapist. Maybe she punches or kicks him in the face and leaves a bruise or knocks a few teeth out...and maybe he retaliates by beating her senseless with a few clumsy blows that she doesn't have the physical strength to block. Maybe she is able to break his arm, and maybe he retaliates by lifting her bodily and putting her head through a windshield. Maybe he catches her unawares and injures her so badly she is unable to put up any kind of effective defense. Maybe she is able to fight him off without being raped/killed/hospitalized, but I do not like her chances. Rapists are not known for fighting fair.
This is not to say that martial arts training is not good or useful. Martial arts training can be used to build confidence, make people aware of potential violence, help people remain calm in violent situations, and sometimes give people the tools that they do need to actually defend themselves - but it is definitely not some magical rape-prevention tactic.
I might have been interested if they did a classic rock version, but all of the versions they have are 90% uninteresting crap and 10% something I might want to hear. Now granted, that is the same ration that pop music uses, but that is also why I don't buy pop music. I only buy music where the whole album is interesting, which is my 95% of my collection is 70's music.
Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock was mostly Classic Rock.
What? I saw the IPv4 exhaustion coming two years ago, and I don't even work in this field. Cisco should have known years ahead and built-in the v6 code just like Microsoft did with Vista years ahead of schedule.
How awful is it that detectives were able to discover that her husband searched for information on the exact thing that killed her shortly before her death, along with other methods of killing someone. On top of that he attempted to delete traces of it. This is an invasion of piracy.
Normally in murder cases the significant other of the victim is the primary suspect. As such I would assume (Didn't RTFA so not sure if there is more detail) that it was pretty easy to get a warrant for his house, computer, bank statements, etc. etc.
He's not making an "argument from authority", since he is directly rebutting the statement which claims that nobody who holds his beliefs could be educated in any of the sciences.
His claim to be educated in the sciences is unverifiable, but if true is an appropriate submission of evidence against the statement he is responding to.
But Neptune (as well as Earth, and Jupiter) is clearly the dominant object in it's orbital area, dwarfing and gravitationally affecting everything else in the 'neighborhood'. Most planetary scientists are okay with this definition of 'clearing the neighborhood'.
"A machine firewall does what...it protects the computer from the listening ports that the OS allowed ITSELF to open."
Sure it does that, but it does a lot more. For example, I might want to allow ssh access from one, a few, or all systems on my internal LAN, but block them from the other side of the DMZ. Just how do you propose to do that without a firewall local to the machine.
You can allow specific traffic to/from specific systems using a network firewall without ever touching a machine. This is common in enterprise environments.

What is your definition of "a lot"..? Also, can someone get us a list of these companies so that we can all avoid them?
