Starts slowly? What ancient hardware/version of Word are you using? The splash screen for Word 2010 includes a little box that allows you to abort opening the program if you double-clicked its icon by mistake. Unfortunately, I can't move my hand fast enough to click it before I'm staring at a new blank document. Typing "vi filename" actually takes longer.

Umm, what kind of supercomputer do I need to run text editor? vi fi[tab][enter] is as fast as blink of the eye ;)

Anyway, having some colonists on mars, and terraforming it would ensure that no single catastrophic event could kill all humanity. With the exception of blewing up whole solar system of course :)

Then we would be allowed to fuck up one planet and learn from mistakes.
For example I doubt that mars colonists would burn carbon based fuel in it's atmosphere.. There's simply none of it there. So, colonization would initially be cleaner.

Into rotating what? Some mechanism that has friction, which however turns torque into heat. Even non-connected electric motor will have rotating friction with air, thus heating up the air.

If you look at the whole system (motor + mechanical device, light bulb + walls/curtains, computer), they are all very efficient heaters as many have stated above.

As for original article - clever idea, because sometimes you really want 100 or 200 watts of tungsten light, as it's pretty nice for the eyes.. no blinking, warm colors on photos, etc :) Not any of the energy-saving shit.

And as some houses here are heated only by means of electricity, usually by using 2kW electric heaters, I don't see anything wrong with some extra heat from tungsten lightbulbs :)
