    Doesn't the 3rd slideshow photo (http://www.popsci.com/popsci/flat_files/space/spa ce1102boeing_slideshow/slide03.html) look faked?

    (check the angle of the shadows on the engine intake vs. the shadows on the ground)

    But the hi-res photo on Boeing's site looks legit, haven't seen the movie yet...

    It just amazes me that the still-litigating states don't bring up IE on Mac OS. It is definitely self-contained, it can definitely be removed. If they can do that on a different OS, why can't they do that on their own?

    I suspect the question isn't why can't they, but why they choose not to. And I'm sure that the answer to that question has nothing to do with benefits for the end-users & consumers...

    There is also KBPS here in Portland, http://www.allclassical.org/
    which is a user-supported station. No commercials, just a pledge drive twice a year.

    Did anyone catch the part where they were talking about the Enterprise Agreement:

    "But joining means CIOs must also sign a contract that bars them from using any competitive products."

    Does that sound like I think it sounds? Does anyone know anything about it?

    Gosh, it's a good thing that the DOJ settlement will prevent these kinds of shenanigans, I feel safer already.

    Sorry to hear that; have you checked with the recruiting office at your school? Even though you graduated a year ago, they should still be able to get you some job leads.

    As far as your interview experiences, my stock reply is along the lines of "Oh. I presumed that you were interested in an educated professional, not the cheapest worker." Then I leave.

    Yes, Orthodox Christian celebrate Xmas, they just do it according to the old (Georgian?) calendar, so it's in early January.

    And of course, not every Russian is Orthodox Christian, anymore than every Afghan is Taliban.

    Yes, I was aware of the recent 2600 decision.

    IIRC though, 2600 posted links and just the src (?). I was thinking of a formal "academic" (nudge-nudge-wink-wink) paper describing the process of hacking CSS.

    Regardless, yesterday was certainly Black Thursday.

    Well, one factor would be "which languages"? If the blocks are coded in (for example) C/C++, Perl, and Java, then I would hope that any reasonably competent programmer would not have any problems.

    If it's coded in 68000 Asm, Eiffel, and Cobol* then, well, it's the PHB's fault for allowing that to happen.

    *These three chosen not to imply a slur that they are obscure, just that they're different and expertise in them might not be that common.

    Everytime I hear someone from the RIAA or the recording companies carp & whine about how they're only concerned about the artist, I could just puke. Shut the fuck up Hilary, just shut the fuck up.

    Maybe it's time for this proposal:

    - On each CD, print the amount of the artist's royalties and an address to send it to.
    - Also make this information available on the web.
    - When people post an MP3 of the CD, include the royalty rate and address.
    - When you burn a CD, send a check to the artist. The _artist_.

    This way, everyone gets compensated for exactly the value they added: The artist gets their fair share, and the end user doesn't have to spend the majority of a yuppie foodstamp to buy a single CD. The recording company gets compensated for exactly the valued they added to the specific transaction: zero, zip, zilch.

    Yeah, I know what chance this has of happening...

    Wow, that's progress. When I left the Navy in '88 they were still using those huge grey TTY machines (Mod 7 or Mod 42?) and paper tape! Granted, they were on their way out, but they weren't totally out the door either...

    Oh, and I won't say anything at all about the vacum tubes in the KW-26 machines...

    While I agree that there is a significant mindset against "free" SW, perhaps they (the military brass) need to bear the following in mind:

    Number of Navy ships disabled due to Windows NT crashing: One.

    Number of Navy ships disabled due to Linux crashing: Zero.

    (yes, I know it was an application that precipitated the crash, and yes I know that there aren't any Navy ships running Linux anyway, but you know what they say about the three types of lies...)
