  1. Stupid Policies on Allen Telescope Array Shut Down · · Score: -1, Flamebait

We fail to tax the rich and the corporations and neglect everything that is important. We have a retarder population calling their buddies at the Tea Party. Join me. I run the P. Party and I have something for their tea.

  2. Warning on Bizarre Porn Raid Underscores Wi-Fi Privacy Risks · · Score: 2

We would like to believe that law enforcement types are bright enough to collect a great deal of hard evidence before raiding, arresting, detaining or even interviewing a suspect. That raid was absurd.
And it gets worse. In Florida complaints of abuse to a senior citizen are handled by Children and Family Services. These meat heads only investigate 10% of the reports made. This state agency is responsible for deaths of children and harm to the disabled and a total lack of responsibility to seniors. Funding and low job qualifications are probably at the root of it all. We need to eliminate that agency and start from ground zero with all new people and a quality budget. Constant budget restraints murder people. Thank the right wing for dead children and abused seniors.

  3. Housing? on Graphene Super Paper Is 10x Stronger Than Steel · · Score: 1

Obviously if it can be made durable enough it might be a wonderful housing material. A cardboard like wall of this stuff might mean the end of wind storms destroying walls and roofs. It also sounds rather ideal for car and truck skins. And a new trombone made of this stuff might also be very interesting. Trurning a 2.5 lb. musical instrument into a three oz. instrument that resist destruction would be a blessing.

  4. Hmmm! on Robot Throws First Pitch At Phillies Game · · Score: 3

Way back in 1959 I worked as a teen in a batting cage. The machines actually did throw much as a human does with an elbow and forearm type of mechanism. It was very realistic as no two balls would ever leave the gutter shaped hand the same way due to starting with the balls laces in different positions. So you could get dusted off or even hit by a ball and curves and balls slightly high or low were also thrown. We had three machines. One was little league speed. One for minor league and the final machine was set up to act like a pro pitcher in the world series. Actually I believe that machine was throwing just a bit faster than any pro pitcher could throw although it was supposedly identical to a hot, fast ball. That machine was actually a bit frightening. A mistake in that cage just might get you hurt. The New York Yankees team members used to drop by and smack balls around. They really do hit balls further than normal people can. I know as I was the kid that had to pick up the balls and we had a full size ball field to cover. At night it took some skill not to be slaughtered by a line drive while gathering balls. Keep in mind that there were three batters firing at me. Those days were pre OSHA and I suppose I was taking on a serious risk. Life was different back then.

  5. Distance? on Instant Quantum Communication Is Near · · Score: 1

  6. Crime Tool on Michigan Police Could Search Cell Phones During Traffic Stops · · Score: 1

Cell phones are a great tool for criminals to use in many circumstances. It sort of makes sense that government would need the ability to see what has transpired on a cell phone. This could go all the way upstream to finding terrorists and all the way down stream to people who take secret pics of others nude in a spa or dressing area. Maybe it is time for all of us to be a bit more open to the idea that others have very good reason to review the actions of us all just as we should have the ability to review their actions.
Most people probably feel that a device that would catch their teen drag racing in the family car is a great idea. Less people would be happy about a device that phones a cop if they are driving drunk. I wonder how many people would be in favor of a device that is 100% reliable in discovering adultery in a spouse. Yet people should expect absolutely no right to do wrong no matter what their feelings.

  7. Ask a diabetic on Is Sugar Toxic? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Almost all that we eat is converted to sugar by our own bodies. Protein is the exception. The catch is that carmelization occurs and this end product clogs our internal organs. It is one reason why older peoples eyes don't look as clear as when they were young. So yes sugar does help to kill you and there is nothing at all that you can do about it other than a mild state of starvation all your life. Prevention may extend life but it ruins the quality of life to such a degree that one almost must be perverted to maintain that degree of hunger.
Whet we are seeing are people looking for a way to get attention and make money simply by spouting nonsense. Think about the extent of this phony evangelism. How many people have made money, one way or another, by selling diets and diet products? And every one of those diets and diet products was hot air with a liberal dose of lies melted in to the alloy. Yet simply lying and stealing money with false health claims is not enough to be put in prison these days. And the suckers keep right on lining up to lose their money. Whether it's the daily miracle cure for arthritis or the miracle weight loss method it is all nonsense.

  8. Public Rights on Judge Reveals Secret Righthaven Copyright Contract · · Score: 2

This is a very good reason for all contracts to be open to public inspection. Courts cost the tax payers large sums of money. If all of the suits are reversed the expense incurred by the public will be severe.
It is an interesting concept that a business or an individual might be able to sell the right to sue for another parties losses. For example what if a private investor were to contract with me to get all benefits from any injuries I might sustain in a traffic accident in exchange for a lump sum in hand? The possibilities seem sinister and endless.

  9. Time on What Happened To the Climate Refugees? · · Score: 1

We don't always see things happening slowly around us. For example the population of South Florida is always growing. Who is to say that the recent weather patterns are not causing people to avoid moving here? I would think that a lot of people would have great fear of moving to New Orleans as well.
In essence we are only on the leading edge of this catastrophe. I'm certain we will see populations shifting about soon enough.

  10. Technology Vs. People on Jesse Jackson, Jr. Pins US Job Losses On iPad · · Score: 1

The entire concept of technology is to eliminate human labor. And if viewed that way technology is a success. We no longer need fifty men swinging scythes to cut our lawns. One guy with a cheap lawn mower can easily replace those fifty laborers.
Almost no one is giving thought to the end results of this trend. As less and less tasks require human input we must find a way to pay people not to work. We are now at a tipping point in which the displacement of labor as well as the end of economies as we know and understand them will exist.
As for deflation we really had best not go there. Deflation is a death spiral and if it starts there is no bottom to it. Imagine an entire bushel of prime apples for one penny and no one has a penny.
In particular the right wing needs to confront reality. I see all kinds of rants about the elimination of Social Security. They all claim that current retirees benefits will not be touched as they only want to get rid of Social Security for the younger generations. But birth rates are not what they used to be. Even if that twenty year old worker is never to receive benefits he will carry a big load for those now retired just as those now retired carried a big load for the generation before them. So we would have young workers suffer loss of a big chunk of their pay checks with no hope of getting benefits when they are old. Worse yet jobs for younger workers are vanishing as technology displaces human labor. Still, we see not one political leader even mention these issues much less propose any sort of cure.
The catch is this. The fix for these problems will very much seem to be socialistic even though it has nothing at all to do with socialism. For a president or congressman to talk about real solutions for this issue would be political suicide due to a very uneducated public having knee jerk reactions. The choice is cure or chaos. The field seems to be tilted towards chaos.

  11. Stalking? on 'Scrapers' Dig Deep For Data On Web · · Score: 1

Collecting data about others is somewhat an essential freedom. But my view and the modern view differ as most people do not feel the same way. But if we take the usual view any company collecting data about a specific person could be charged with stalking. We usually think of a pervert stalking a child or pretty girl. But stalking is stalking regardless of whether it is a corporation or a pervert. The motive for the stalking is irrelevant. Considering the current mood huge civil suits might take place and even criminal prosecutions might be applied. This is one demonstration of why hacking and social engineering need to be legal. After all, how will you ever know to what degree others are studying you without being able to penetrate their data? Restricting hacking is a path to tyranny that is quite direct and predictable. The natural balance is to allow all people and groups to completely study each other in great depth.

  12. Whose Law Enforcement? on Self-Wiping Hard Drives From Toshiba · · Score: 2

The US simply does not manufacture items like hard drives. I am certain that law enforcement as well as government good squads in many nations will not tolerate any form of personal security including a self wiping drive. So when it comes to back doors and over rides it may well be governments other than our own that can peek into these drives at will. And I doe believe that any software or hardware that is effective in securing ones' data will usually be from a source either infiltrated or owned by government agencies.
I'm not so sure how much I would like to protest the situation as I understand that covert electronic modes have already been effective for our forces in war actions.

  13. The Right To Offend Others on Tennessee Bill Helps Teachers Challenge Evolution · · Score: 1

Really that is what it all boils down to. No person or group has any right not to be mortally offended. That is what free speech is really all about. There is no real argument about evolution and the Bible. So what if God used evolution to create all things. Evolution is simply one tool that God might choose to use. And we have no clue about what Genesis means by seven days and seven nights either. For all we know God used Lucifer to create heaven and Earth just so we would have things like jock itch, athlete's foot and tooth ache in our world.

  14. It's About Time on Is Science Just a Matter of Faith? · · Score: 1

Usually the worse the education the more that science is accepted as factual. Yes science is very useful and science does try to self correct. But what really happens is that those corrections are shifts to another belief which may or may not be more reality based. One can almost look at science like the frames in an analog film. Stop science at every certain time and ask if it is real or error. Is 1920s science real or error? Is 1990s science real or error? Now it is 2011 and our recent errors are not obvious yet. But just like the science of 1920 the science of 2011 will be error and does nothing to reflect the reality of existence.
The most troubling thing of all is that many, supposedly well educated people, fail to understand the situation.

How about fines for sky divers or motorcyclists as they tend to sustain injuries in those activities?
The list of things that do harm is endless. Should we tax those things? And isn't getting old a great expense to society? Should we fine people for every day they live after the age of 50?

  17. They Will Cheat on Requiring Algebra II In High School Gains Momentum · · Score: 1

Many school systems will simply give a very weak course in Algebra II rather than the pre college academic Algebra II classes like we had back in the 1950s. I seriously doubt that most students would be able to complete such a course these days. Even in the colleges many courses have been diluted and turned into baby like courses. If you require most students to actually learn they simply drop out of school. The GED has caused this and must be halted. It is a lot easier to drop out and then take a watered down GED course than to actually get a high school education. And sadly it will cause social and racial chaos if teaching returns to our schools. And to make it worse there is a current concept of punishing teachers if the kids fail or drop out.
How many states are really willing to let the outside world know about the quality of their schools? ZERO

I really am not concerned with the price of a CD as it is not vital to own such things. But I am concerned when works can not be purchased and are still not available for free on the net. Not only the finished product but sheet music is often impossible to acquire at any price. Laws that cause us to suffer loss of materials of our cultural heritage can not be legal. I believe that Lincoln made remarks similar to that, along the lines that an unjust law is not law and God will judge those that place unjust laws into place.

  20. Re:What's funny is on Drug Runners Perfect Long-Range Subs · · Score: 1

The reason that drug deregulation is not considered is it is a disaster. First the pro drug crowd not only wants decriminalization but they also want a very special status in which product quality and purity is not examined or a path to taxation kept in view. If recreational drugs were sold at a pharmacy by prescription and had to comply with all the regulations that all other items comply to drugs would be very expensive. And it gets even worse. The addict that can not acquire $300 a day to feed their habit and stay alive also can not earn $20. a day as a rule. So even if drugs were cheap and easy to purchase their habits will still be supported by their crimes. I'm funny about that sort of thing. I don't want my skull bashed in for an addict to get $1000. But I hate the idea of my skull being crushed to get $20. just as much.
Maybe if we could get all the addicts to sniff spray paint it would be the perfect answer. It is super cheap and they can stay really high for $2. a day. And as long as we are not stupid enough to offer them medical help or rehab they will all die soon enough fulfilling their goal of being stoned all their miserable lives. Or we could just gun them down. You know, keep it simple.

Worse yet hate speech is frequently a very vague term. We had a local minister burning the Koran. That does not imply that he hates anyone at all. But in the minds of many Moslems they feel it is hate speech because the action offends them. Offending people does not mean that you hate them. I am reminded of that lunatic Baptist sect that turns up when soldiers lost in war funerals take place. Obviously they offend almost 100% of the population by troubling those funeral services. But they do not hate the dead soldiers nor do they hate the families of the dead soldiers. What they are against is paying attention to the dead instead of paying attention to Christ and they also try to point out that Christians may not take up arms. Yet the entire world sees them as a hate group. This stuff with special classes of people has simply gone too far. Maybe we should be telling our young never to take up arms for any reason. If it was good enough for Christ is it not good enough for all of us?

By experienced I mean experienced in a specific terrain as a full time hunter for at least five years and in snow states even five years is not sufficient to gain experience as winter shuts down hunting quite a bit.
