Please, give the poor doctor a name. And, on the off chance that an ambulance with one of these on board is stranded in some remote area for years, please make a female one too.
I see the future of a HDTV / PVR combination as being the first good reason to use a PC to record television.
PC's are already capable of recording in HD. Cheap storage and easy upgrading allow people to record more shows. There are up-to-the second accurate guides avalaible on the internet that could easily be transformed into "guide" content. It's easier to hack a PC to do exactly what you want then it is to modify a HD-PVR to do what you want.
It's sad. XM should really look how the open source mentality of making things better worked with TiVo. The would have been taken under a long time ago if they weren't hacked and made better.
Each student learns differently. This particular student has a visual implement. Other students have other specific learning disabilities.
Perhaps the way to resolve this problem is to talk with the teacher about an alternative form of assignment. The purpose of map finding activities isn't to study maps and memorize locations, it is to expand your view on the world by realizing the physical attributes that make different places unique.
A good teacher will be able to accommodate for many different learning disabilities and ask for help from colleagues when a new learning challenge is encountered. Perhaps the solution doesn't lye in high-res maps, but rather a different strategy in teaching and learning? However, this post is just an alternative view. I would defiantly try an LCD projector. Many companies may even donate a used one.
I think that this Starnix company is in a prime spot to be bought out. I could see the features that they are working on being a powerfull addition to products from big companies such as Sony, Dell, even the evil Microsoft XP media edition.
1)
This Andrew guy is obviously an UberGeek. Congratulations on achiving such notariety.
2)
This system is absolutly amazing. It is an interesting test of the application of exising technology. He didn't create anything new, he just used what was already avaliable.

Everything seems perfectly legal, but some big companies are loosing money on the setup. Will Andrew's work lead to harsher laws in Canada? Once this type of setup is common place, I think that the non-communist values that some law making Canadians have may be overpowered.
There are very few women going into CS programs. I know that sounds obvious, but that really is the problem. People feel more comfortable among others who have the same interests, ideas, gender, etc.
So, once women stop looking at CS programs and I.T. jobs as male dominated, then more women will be attracted to them.
"The BlueSniper rifle for capturing data from Bluetooth-enabled phones is constructed from a Choate Ruger Mini-14 stock, 14dbi semi-directional Yagi antenna, standard rifle scope, electrical tape, zip ties and cardboard."
They really should have used duct tape rather then electrical tape. It would have been much more Chic!
I teach weekly computer lessons to my class. I stopped teaching them typing quickly after they found out about MSN. The need to communicate is very powerful. In order to communicate over MSN, typing fast is required.
Quid-pro-quo - I have to teach them that proper grammar is not using MSN shorthand:)
It would have been great to go. However, it was too expensive for me to go. I asked my boss, but with our predominately Windows network, it was tough. Even my "but our mail servers run linux" rebuttal didn't justify the expensive cost. My boss did say that I could have the day off with pay to go, but they didn't have the money to pay for the conference.
Looking back on it, I think that they made the right choice not to let me go. The company likes linux because it is cheap and works very well. However, sending me on a conference where nothing new was presented only a discussion on older ideas may not have been cost effective.
I really hope that these "snake oil" salesmen keep up the good work. The longer that they keep selling silly ideas like this, the longer things will stay the same.
If gamming is such a big part of your life, perhaps you made the wrong choice with a significant other. Go find a girl / boy friend who will game with you!
Of course, as all true/.er's know, simply finding any sort of female who will tolerate more then a few minutes with them is hard enough:)
Hey hey, I'm actually from Canada. There's a whole T.V. show about how little Americans know about our country. Each week (no lie) a guy goes down south and asks questions. My favorite: "Who is the Canadian President" A: "Tim Hortons".
Won't work in many parts of the North

In the upper states (buffalo, etc) and many parts of Canada, they have a great deal of trouble with things like these. Snow plows simply pick anything not level with the road off. Even if they're dug down a bit into the pavement, they still get damaged and eventually get picked out. I don't think that it's going to work to well up here.
Now, figure out how to do all that in a paint and then you're a kabillionair!
Wouldn't it be cheaper to ask a few research firms to donate (or buy cheap) some of the animal tracking tags. Stick one to everyone's clothes and then if someone gets lost, break out the wand thing I see on the discovery channel?
Although a bunch of webcams wired (or 802.11b) should do the job. I've seen monitoring software on freshmeat for this stuff before.
Your right, and I think that your reasoning is why console video game systems (XBOX, Playstation, etc) get hacked so quickly. However, with Cel Phones, the hardware changes so often, that it wouldn't be hard to keep changing the DMA hardware code every generation. Cel phones are almost disposable these days and as hardware gets even cheaper, it is going to become more of a problem for your friendly neighborhood cracker.
Good thinking. I used some slightly more expensive CAT 5 in my home. When I ran my wire, I decided that the extra money was worth a little bit of extra shield. The last thing that you need when using vi is a fuzzy screen:)
Of course, it goes without saying that as with regular network runs, you must be very careful about power lines. I worked hard to stay as far away from them as I could.
Please, give the poor doctor a name. And, on the off chance that an ambulance with one of these on board is stranded in some remote area for years, please make a female one too.
Oh man, that's so geeky.

Another great article Cringely!
The RSA keys have been avaliable for a long time. They're great.
I'm impressed that AOL is using them. It shows that they're at least a little concerned with security.
I really hope that this is a starting point for web hosting providers to start using these.
Great article. Thank's for posting the link!

They're watching old Mission Impossible episodes and reselling the technology to the bloated RIAA.
I think that I'll corner the market on the A-team technology, start filing patents and help with the war against proper audio distribution.

oh man, not only did I make a spelling mistake, but I posted under the wrong story.
The now most common Ad on Slashdot told me so. The TCO for windows is WAY lower. There's a prety bar graph and everything!!!
:)
LIARS!
A good, easy to read, consumer grade local port sniffer / analyzer. How hard would it be to build a frontend that reported on "odd" behavior?
Hold on...keep this quite. I'm just filing patent number 109180482 now!

Now I can be subjected to the COMPLETE lyrics of "hit me baby one more time" once ringtone makers find this out.
Did you know that ringtone sales make up 10% of music relates sales now? That's a big number.
