  2. Troublesome implementation on Earthlink Invests In Broadband Over Power Lines · · Score: 1

The way this is implemented bothers me a little bit. I could be wrong but it looks like they are just creating hot spots and using some 802.11 variant to get into the home.

I live in Raleigh and thought about getting more information until I saw this. Since they are doing it this way they can really limit how you can use the service. Most other broadband ISP's have an ethernet solution which allows you to use any of these routers that are on the market (linksys, netgear, linux using iptables, etc) but with this method you can really be screwed. First of all the can hide the WEP so that only machines that they approve of can even connect to the hot spot in the first place. So they could very easily support only Windows clients (or maybe Mac too). But Linux users would be screwed. And I have never heard of a wifi to wifi router or wifi to ethernet router so sharing inside you home without them knowing about it could be problematic. I just see all kinds of problems that this might cause.

I am all for choice but this really smells fishy to me.

  3. Idea of commercials is a changin' on AOL's Mystro TV vs Tivo? · · Score: 1

With the advent of Tivo and whatever other PVR you want to throw in the mix you are going to see a lot of product placement in TV shows and/or shows sponsored by a product much like they did in the early days of TV. The commercial is going to be so ingrained in the show the only way not to watch it is to not watch the show.

Network TV is supported by the ads so if most people are skipping the ads then one of two things has to happen:

    1) Network TV, at least free network TV, goes away (not likely)
    2) Ads change to get around the PVR

The whole idea of time shifting affecting the money making abibility of a show is kinda silly. If a show is good it will be watched whenever.

While the hell the PTO doesn't employ some moderately technically literate people to make sure these stupid patents are never granted in the first place is beyond me.

If there should be any blame placed it should be with the PTO, although Altavista (CMGI) should know better. It seems to me that the incredible incompetence of this organization to allow these sort of obvious prior art patents to go through is making a bunch of lawyers rich while at the same time causing all kinds of trouble for everyday users.

A company publishes a software product riddled with bugs. Customers complain. The company's response is, "Well, look how much worse the other guy is! At least we let you see the source code!"

I for one agree with Bob Young. Large scale software products alway have bugs and always will. The difference is the business model which i think in Redhat's case is heads above M$. Dot 0 releases in almost any product have general problems and it is not until the product has been put through the extensive tests of production do most of these bugs show up. If you want bug free code wait for 7.1 or 7.2. If you want a company that truly doesn't care about its customers go buy Windoze. But just quit busting on a company that is working hard to do the right thing.

I for one have a cable modem with linux as my firewall and bunches of ethernet ports to connect multiple machines. My problem is running the cables since I live in an apartment. Why not put some sort of wireless connection in these devices and then let the box (airport for example) it talks to determine whether or not to use dialup or ethernet. Most of these machines don't need kick ass bandwith so even slow 2mb wireless should be sufficient. Just my 2c. -- Bill
