Engadget has a couple of screens: The applications screen shows an email client next to GMail.
This screen shows the email setup wizard.
So it seems like there is an alternative to gmail.
What I'm missing in the new discussion system is the option to change the comment threshold like in the old system. Now I have to go to the user prefs to change the threshold. Changing the threshold on the comment page is easier, especially when you would like to moderate low scored comments.
What's new? Same kind of prices are accounted to students and teachers in The Netherlands. We can buy Office, XP, Vista, Visio, Project planner for similar prices. I cannot imagine that other countries do not have deals like this. So what's the news?
Photo editing services on the web already exist for several years. Years ago I played with a photo filter tool on the Nikon website. You could apply all sorts of funny filters on your foto's, like cartoon filters and so on.
Now there are several (free) services available, like myImager, Phixr and Pixenate. Image processing is done at the webserver. A preview of the image processing result is shown on the web page and the final image can be downloaded at full resolution. So no rocket science at all. Just some clever web programming. I think there is space for a big player (Adobe, did I hear the G-word?) to create a more advanced web based image processing service. I think it could be very popular and a real concurrent for light weight photo editing tools.
With Opera you can zoom in or out on the complete rendered page, and not just on the texts or the images. So you can zoom in without nuking the quite so often lame page designs. Awesome function I'm definitely mssing in firefox. Bug/feature request has been filed in 1999 already (bugzilla number 4281 - copy and paste the url. Slashdot referers are blocked by bugzilla.) Vote for this bug, it might help:-\.
Truth is, no professional actually uses Blender. You'll see the occasional one-off logo or something like that, but even a serious hobbiest uses something like Lightwave or Max.
In august a Belgian short movie won the critics award on the Film Festival of Locarno. Have a look at theirwebsites. The images and special effects are really gorgeous. Modeled in Blender. Painting in Gimp and Cinepaint. Rendered on Suse Linux machines. Anyway, here are all the technical specs.
In Windows it is possible, and preferable, to disable most of the plugins. Loading al these unnecessary plugins makes Arcobat Reader extremely slow at startup. My plugin folder only contains the plugins EScript.api, EWH32.api, IA32.api, Search.api and Search5.api. Now ist starts up very fast. Don't know if that is possible with the Linux version.

Ajax is the number one footbal team in The Netherlands. It has a history of almost 105 years. From all the Dutch football clubs it has won the most cups, including the Champions League and the World Cup for club teams. It's the first hit that comes up at google. Says enough. Nothing lame about that.
... thanks to sysadmins following the "best practices" from Microsoft, Thunderbird/Mozilla Mail is only usable for writing and sending email. So I'm stuck to Outlook for reading mail.
Yes, in The Netherlands it's called Teletekst. And it is still very popular these days. In fact people use it as the first source for information like latest news, weather, traffic information, TV and radio schedules. Dutch Teletekst on the web can be found here.
BTW, you do not have it in the US? Didn't know that.
I forgot the complete procedure but the trick is to create Unix type mail folders in Pegasus and move all the emails to these folders. These folders can be copied to a location within your profile and Mozilla/Thundebird can open these folders right away.
I remember that Visual Basics for Applications in Office 97 was in Dutch. Yes, it was a Dutch Office version. Pain in the ass when I had to use an original english version macro.

Good idea in fact. Give us a cheap windows version without the bloat. I will pay for the core version and install my own tools of choise.

I'm not aware of the Russion toilet habits: is it a flush or squad toilet?
The Welsh village with the longest name in the UK is also one of the few domain names that uses all possible 63 characters allowed for a .eu domain name. Check it out at http://llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllan tysiliogogogochuchaf.eu

A short review of some of these tools can be found at the "Ditigal Inspiration" weblog.
Have a look at the web sites of the united Dutch public broadcast companies, the web site of the public broadcast company, named VPRO, one of the founders of MMBase, or the extensive VPRO 3voor12 pop music website. Enjoy public radio and television on the web. And then decide whether MMBase is weak or not.

Thomas Friedman's has written a column about it. Interesting argument in fact on why the US should have to use alternative energy sources.
Todays Slashdot sig says it all:
Time is an illusion perpetrated by the manufacturers of space.

I can't say.
Although I can say that it is illegal for children to drive cars (at least in the country where I live in).
Have a look at the Stokke web site (one of the European versions) for a kneel chair.

One popular bank in The Netherlands send a single TAN codes per SMS to the user's mobile phone whenever a transaction is done.

So many opportunities, so promising, where are the applications?
