  1. Re:Kinda Interesting on Petabyte Storage Array · · Score: 1

The only places I can think of that would benefit from this are supercomputing institutes
We have been in the design phase for a storage solution that would provide scalability up to an exabyte (on paper, in theory, with some dark magic and light kludges).
The only thing that has amazed me to this point is not the fact we can do it, its the number of applications that require (and the others that logically should require if they were not stuck in the 90's) a serious storage solution.

    SHAMELESS PLUG BELOW:
However the main problem is not how to store and retrieve the data in a seamless fasion, its power and the the fact that, for most applications, you rarely need the drives spinning... So we took that and moved it a step further and power the whole damned thing of, one unit and layer at a time. Add in some deep thought in the power management and you have what we are striving for. Oh, that and 'dial in your own reliability' this last is my phrase.

  2. Methinks we look at this incorrectly on Publishers Say 'Fact-Checking Too Costly' · · Score: 2, Interesting

I will forgo the usual bad joke for this thought:
Someone should pick this up as an opportunity to create a commercial certification such as in MSA, UL, or to a much less and more stupid extent, A+. e.g. Certified to be factual by Sarlon (its made up I hope). With that they get the right to put the big ol' Sarlon stamp on the cover and in the publishers disclaimer.
As with all certifications, whose without are obviously sub-par and not to be trusted.
    I am only partially joking.

  8. Its a non-problem on Mac users 'too smug' Over Security? · · Score: 1

For instance, if an OS needs a firewall in order to be secure, that OS should be deemed 'insecure' until there is no longer a need (i.e. the problems fixed), but it does in no way indicate that all OSes need a firewall to be secure.

If there were a market for such tools for the MAC OS, people would buy and use them (its a curcular arguement, but thats economics for ya). Instead I would measure the relative security of the MAC OS by the lack of need for such tools for day-to-day operation.
Just because one OS has a severe need for such third party tools, it should not indicate all OSes have the same need.

I too do not give a rats ass what this guy thinks about Linux or Windows. But I also know that there are some here who do, and I have the option to ignore this article.

Look, this whole unbiased reporting thing is a load of crap. Newspapers started and functioned for years as weekly open political statements all packaged up for constituents to read. Both left wing and right. Everyone knew what they were and what the motivations were. It was only after pandering to the eventual advertisers that it was decided a more balanced approach was needed, neither to left and not too right. Water it down some more and perfect, we have a load of crap that cannot offend anyone becouse this crap has no smell. Except by the mear fact that they pander to the advertisers pretty much makes them biased by definition.
I do not care about Windows Vs. Linux so much, but I do like to see this method of statement get some attention. It may not be unbiased or balanced, but its far more honest and his political agenda is in clear text.
