  1. Re:Gentoo on Which Linux for Professional Admins? · · Score: 1

I have a similar question comming up with regard to which distro to use in a product we have yet to build. If I cant argue against your points then I am basically screwed. It not personal.
Oh, english excapes me, so please forgive. It is sometimes broken.

    stability

Below standard. Bleeding Edge, often beta.

Beta does not denote lack of stability, at least in the OSI world. It is supposed to, yes. But it does not.
Instead what it tends to mean is "I have this new extravagant change set and I am not quite confortable releasing it as the replacement for the last stable", all the while, as many times as not, the last stable revision exhibits lesser stability characteristics.
By default, Gentoo releases into the tree (as being default) what is deemed to be stable, its up to the package manager to make this determination. If it happens to be beta code, then so be it. I specifically deny that this is in itself an indication of instability.
If "released for quite a while" == stability to you, then go play with debian, they have very old code; it should prove stable for you. We have some machines here, the debian machines run for a long time, just like the gentoo boxes, the redhat boxes are envious that we have flipped the uptime counter (due to minor/known bug in linux) and the redhat boxes do not tend to live so long. I just dont find this statement to have merit, and worse, I find it to be misleading.

    Out of context:
If I was to manage a farm of 200 different of these I'd easily go crazy.

No, no crazy here, you would adapt, and you would likely be hapier for it, as apposed to the alternatives.
How many test debian machines do you have?

    Kudos go out
I always blaim my father for things. Mostly for always having some semi-ironic quip for whatever the situation was. I blaim him for that.
    Such as:
you know son, now matter how big you get, there will always be someone bigger(this was interchangable with "faster, stronger, smarter")
    or
No matter the lock, there will always be a key.. or two
    my favorite
you can keep a secret, but not if you tell someone Well, ya, like duh. (its harder than you might think first off, which I guess is why he told me this)
So in this case I would like to coin another father-esk sort of phrase:
No matter how strong your scheme is, someone will work around it
Although this is probably already covered by the "...Better mousetrap.." sort or saying.
I know that there is a such thing as security. It is secure enough to where it does not take federal mandates and houshold raids to make it secure. Thats security. I am not suggesting things like ssh2 are completly secure and that security promblems will not be found. I am mearly suggesting that it is trusted to be secure and that when a problem is found, it will be fixed.
I am fully unaware of any media distribution method (designed to lock people in) to be secure from breakage or to essentially succeed. I think maybe there has been no case.
All our security is based on the desireable parties having secrets that the undesirable parties cannot derive in any meaningfull timeframe. This involves keys, and algorithyms.
Since the media providers generally dont trust anyone, they seem to think its keen to put the keys in the software where no one may find them.
q: Dont they need to deliver said software to the user?
a: Why yes Dilvish, they do need to do just that
q: Since they need do this, arent they in effect handing the keys to the users and alienating them at the same time?
    a: " " (I like self gratification, I think its healthy)

The results are just what we see. I used to read all the hardware DRM related stuff, but I am not a hardware guy. I am also jaded when it comes to this sort of thing. We have seen all kinds of software cracked and many kinds of hardware cracked.
I am personally not afraid of the security schemes designed to make the media people happy. I am afraid of the jail time. I have faced a judge once over such trivial things, I have no compelling desire to do it again.
I guess what I am saying is that we all know this sort of thing can be done, but I believe the effort would be better spent trying to fund http://www.eff.org/IP/DRM/fair_use_and_drm.html

But still, I by no means inteand to subtract from what has been done here. I just think there is a better way.

Even with a humble project that defines a standard for cataloging independant provided content, and a user interface for expressing interest in such content, the old standard infrastructure we know as cable/satellite/broadcast would potentially take on a slow death. For one, this is not a victimless crime. Bandwidth costs money and well ALL pay for bandwidth, clear accross the globe. Normally the money goes up the chain and gets spread around nicely. But now they would have sympathyzers arbitrarily add to the collective bandwidth requirements in order to subtract available bandwidth from specific users of the internet.
Just to take it a bit further, but in a different direction, maybe we all hate google (ya right), and yahoo is kind enough to give us a tool to increase the operating costs of google. You might argue that we *choose* to use google and we do not *choose* to recieve spam, but I fail to see how this difference makes such immoral and mostly illegal tactics legit.
Flogging might be a good comprimise though. We should never overlook flogging as an alternative. No one gets hurt and we could even serve beer for the event and make it fun for everyone.

And yet with all this testing the other distros, notably RedHat, are not noticably more stable. Methinks stability comparison studies and research into what the various realease philosophies really yield should be accomplished before such assertions are made. The obvious belief that more testing on an unchanging software automatically results in greater stability may well be flawed. I base this idea solely on my perception that, out of the box, RedHat is one of the least stable distros we have used based on a sample install of say 20 out of 100 machines over the past 4 years. The RedHat boxes always gave us the most trouble once put into production. Debian proved to be far more stable, but oddly, Gentoo has nearly equaled Debian for stable production services.
All I am saying is that I would not assume compiling from source will equate to less stability, even though it may seem counterintuitive.

High latency+high bandiwdth connection can benifit from large window sizes on both ends using TCP + some other optimizations, MS already tries to do away with SYN/SYN+ACK in IE in a bad attempt to accelerate the connection buildup. That said, there is nothing inherently wrong with TCP as a protocol, its just that we suffer from original implementation.
When TCP was first developed, memory and bandwidth both were at a premium. All implementations thusfar have usually simply followed the BSD code, and standard mutual understandings have been grudgingly accepted allong the way to improve the performance.
Yep, I proclaim there is nothing wrong with TCP. Only the way we use it.
Now we have high bandwidth channels for the average person. Cool. Its the high latency channels that present a problem. For this reason we end up with TCP accelerators like Mentat's SkyX product or the Via Sat Linkway or the iPSTAR useage of Nettgain. The main difference is these applications do not require you to recode your user app. And non of them would be needed if TCP were retuned on all endpoints.
