that you can't claim rights to a verb. That is why they are trying their best to avoid having it be in anyway officially made a verb. The Coka cola people did this a few years ago in Texas. Those of you from certain parts of the country will know that the word "coke" is used as a generic word for soda in many places. Leading to things like "What kind of coke would you like?" "A Pepsi please". This has been documented by many linguists. To avoid dilution the company has tried to sponser studies showing that it is not used in this way. They are simply trying to avoid becoming a verb before it ruins their trademark. I'm not sure what I think of this but it is far from stupid.

  11. Re:How do banks secure ATM lines? on Citibank Tries to Hush ATM Crypto Vulnerability · · Score: 4, Interesting

They are some kind of leased line. We have customers that run on Frame, ISDN, and yes even dialup but mostly they go into some kind of Frame cloud. No they are not satelite and although a few people are trying to do them over VPNs it is for obvious reasons thought of as being a *very* bad thing. While this does not apply to what they are talking about in the article they mostly use 3DES for all the traffic that goes over the line. So an attacker could most likely wardial and find the dial backup lines and try to get in that way. But why bother with that when most places have dial in lines on their mainframes. Other than that if you had or could get access to the Frame cloud you could try. But at least the ones I work with are *very* hardened and most likely not worth the time /effort to break them remotly because it is hard to get cash over a line and breaking a ATM does not really get you into the mainframe. Far better and easier to try to break the mainframe mostly because there are far more ways to get to them and banks etc. do not pay nearly as much attention to security as you would think. This in spite of the fact that I yell at people all day long on the subject but I'm just one guy and they consider me paranoid. Gawd I hate people. Anyway hope the above answers your questions which could be summed up as I've never heard of anybody breaking them remotely and it would be *very* hard to do so.

  12. Re:zeroth law on The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect · · Score: 4, Informative

Odd that this should come along just as I've gotten done reading Brin's, Bear's, and Benford's Foundation books. First of all the person doing the review got the 1st law wrong or they got it wrong in the book. See below. Clearly "Prime Intellect" had a correct version of the 1st law because it is from there that the zeroth law is derived. And you are correct in Asimov's Foundation prequels he had Dors kill a man to defend Hari because the robots thought that Hari was the key to survival of the human race. Of course one must note that the conflict almost killed Dors. And of course the zeroth law is what lead Daneel to try and shepherd humanity towards a stable future with the Empire and in fact lead him to decide that the Earth had to be destroyed to help the race. And of course in Benford's Foundation book he postulates that robots wiped out any aliens they came accross to ensure that humans would survive. So yes it is clear that Prime Intellect has a version of the zeroth law. Interesting is that "the killer B's" seem to decide that having very powerful creatures with the zeroth law around is not a very good thing.

1 A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

2 A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

3 A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

No I think that it is more complex than that. Yes to some extant I was lucky in that I got into weather which was one of the fields that relied heavily on computers and networks. But of course many other people I worked with did not take advantage of the bit of luck.

I did not mean to present my case as being "simple" far from it and yes there was luck involved. My point in answer to the parent post, and granted I could have explained more, was that working harder, doing something diffrent, and taking advantage of luck when it happens, another example from my case a Cisco gawd who also happened to like me, can and almost always will allow you to improve your situation.

To me the parent seemed to be saying that working harder will not help people who are in very bad situations. I gave my example to show that working harder can help and in most cases will. So I would not call it dump luck because IMO chance favors the prepared.

And I'm not calling them lazy. But you will notice that the event that set everything in motion involved a risk and was in the short term harder than staying put would have been. People need to have the courage to change and then take advantage of the "luck" those changes can produce.

I think most people are taught that they can't improve themselves and therefore don't even try. By pointing out that in many cases you can make your luck I hope to change that perception and to make the point that no matter how bad off you are or how hard you are working at the moment you can improve.

8 years ago I was barely making minimum wage had a wife a kid and due to bad decision making had a degree that was basically worthless. Working two jobs and for all intents and purposes living in a cardboard box.

By making a hard choice, go into the Air Force, while in I worked hard and learned everything about anything anybody would teach me. I also looked around the world and came to realize that computers and networks were *very* big and only going to get bigger I started to insert myself into every situation where they needed someone to help out with any computer related. At the same time I started to devour every book on networking that I could get from any library that I had access to. As a result of that I got out 4 years later and worked at a crappy temp job for a few months while shopping out resumes. Since I had very little experince I got a crappy job doing tech support for a medimum sized ISP. While there I continued to work my ass off and learn everything I could and read everything I could get my hands on. As a result of doing that for the past few years I've managed to go from *very* poor to be rather well off. And it was all hard work. I have yet to meet a person, myself included, who does not waste time. Put even a small perctange of that wasted time to work and you can improve your situation. So yes they should work harder and study more.
