I'm not sure how to start but I'm not going to start with the obvious insult. A few months ago in a bid to get some docs out of MS for a thing I needed to do I was forced to sign up for a Passport. So yes indeed I got a hotmail account with it. Now how in the hell does that force me to use the thing? Answer it does not. If you need free email use http://www.hushmail.com instead. Now what is your excuse?
But of course as the devs point out you *really* want to compile anyway. They include the Debian rules so it is pretty easy and fast. That is what I and most people I know do.
I happen to agree with you on your choice of OSes and I don't think of myself as paranoid but rather what I like to call "right" and I suspect you are also.:)
In any case the problem here is that they don't want people to change the passwords and they want them to be the default or at least a well known password and any well known password *will* become public. This is of course because the vast majority of their lusers will fsck up changing the passwords and it will be a support nightmare. Also if they can get into the router, please for the love of gawd quit calling them modems, it is much easier for them to provide support. Of course the password leaked and now they need to put a good spin on it and in Amerika what better way to put a good spin on it than to blame the customer.
No they have taken something *very* concrete. They have used up bandwidth that I have paid for, they have taken up space on my HD, they have taken my time which is most certainly both of value and concrete. In addition to this they have used processor cycles and other precious resources on machines that do not belong to them to send out their stuff.
Then lets get into the other damages. If I where to send you half the stuff via snail mail that these people send out I would be arrested, as well I should be in that case. So in short yes they are theives and criminals and should be treated as such. So yes there should be laws against this stuff because it does cost me money and denies me use of resources I would otherwise have. It may be small in some ways. OTOH in the not having to look at their filth area it is big.
Having said that you are right we need a tech solution also. I think http://www.tmda.net/ have the right idea. Read about it install it and use it. I'm looking at a way to make it reject anything that is not signed (Think GNU Privacy Guard) with a similar message. This would be a good thing but we also need the law to be on our side and it should be.
I don't know where you are at or what they are doing right now. But when i worked for PTC they hired a ton of MEs who they then trained to be pretty good sys admins. Granted you would have to answer phones for a while and it would most likely be a pay cut. But it just might get you there.
Yup they have done this for a long time that is why http://www.cheapbytes.com sells "Pink Tie" a Red Hat "Workalike" now.:) Pretty clever hack. The point being RH doens not care if you sell CDs made from the ISOs but they do care about it being marketed as such.
You most likely already know this but I'll post it here for others. If you are and/or want to be a security pro and you have not yet read Secrets and Lies you need to run not walk to a bookstore get a copy and read it. Twice.
You could always just take Bob's thumb. You could also find out some piece of information about Bob that could be used to make Bob want to let you in. You could drug Bob. You or someone working for you could seduce Bob. You could offer Bob a large amount of money/pr0n/whateverelseBobwants. You could convince Bob that you are good and that the person running the system you want access to is evil and that Bob should let you in.
Do not fool yourself *anytime* there is a human involved you can use social engineering to get in.
A large number of North American DVD players can be made regionless with not much effort. Check out http://www.vcdhelp.com. Also a great place to consult with before buying a player.
Debian only wants one CD for a base install. Now granted a true base install does not give you much. Assuming that you have a decent net connection you can just do the install over the network. Granted it will ask you some configuration questions. I tend to tell it to ask me everything and to ask it over and over but you can configure it to ask you almost nothing.
Has it ever occured to you that cheap stuff is cheap for a reason and that if you bought quality up front you would have fewer problems and save money in the long run? I have had no more problems recently that at any other time in the past 20 years.
Very good I found a new band that I might like. They are called Switchblade Symphony. Now if there was only a way I could download a couple of tracks to listen I'd most likely go out and buy a couple of CDs. Oh well too bad Napster is dead.
Too much trash out there for me to risk my money without being able to get a handful of tracks.:(
"Yea right" or "good luck" simply means that it is so damned obvious that networked computers are a fundamental part of the job as currently practiced that it is just silly to say that you can do the job without them. Also IIRC the parole papers said networked and made no mention of the Internet. Also almost all companies have all machines on their networks with a default gateway that points towards a firewall or Internet router of some sort. And almost every job out there requires you to use email in some way or another.
So lets take salesman as an example. Yes it might be possible to have a salseman who is not on your network and/or could not reach the Internet from their machine and had no Internet email. But a great many people would have to change the way they work and expect to do business in order to do business with this person. Also to maintain everything in a state where you could prove to the courts that you are not helping them violate parole would be a major pain in the arse. So , in the real world, no one is going to hire them.
The same goes for almost every other job you listed. So I will grant you it would be possible to do at least some of the jobs you listed without access to a networked computer that could not reach the Internet in any way. But it would be damned hard, nearing impossible, to get anyone to hire you if they needed to jump through those hoops.
So in theory I guess you are mostly right, but in practice I'm right. And talking about theory is IMO just wanking.
I don't code so I really don't know but what is wrong with OpenGL and SDL?
is there anything it *can't* do?

if anybody wants a copy reply to this and let me know I'll let you know when I get it done.
So does that mean that the fast forward and skip buttons on my DVD player should be illegal and are censorship?
But of course as the devs point out you *really* want to compile anyway. They include the Debian rules so it is pretty easy and fast. That is what I and most people I know do.

Yes we do in fact live in a sad fscked up world.

Yea but you would have to port VIM to get a *good* editor.
suggest this to Monster Garage.

Yup I used the fire thing when I was in the Air Farce. Also a rowing machine that had some kind of a game the details of which escape me just know
Damn I wish netflix had Hentai. :(

Yes that would be the correct answer :)
http://www.osnews.com and it has a Victoria's Secret ad? WTF? That was funny.
