They're so small that I have a vision of like 15 of the 512MB or 1GB ones in a special vinyl insert in my dayplanner...

Actually, I've been thinking of trying out a sony memorystick protector case, as they are roughly the same size (a bit smaller than the memory stick, I think). Rexz forgot to mention that the LED is ORANGE! Glowing out of the purple plastic shell! My wife occasionally plug/unplugs it just to watch the LED blink... it's really cute.

No testimonial here about the provided software, I have all the support I need from usb-storage and cryptoloop. MyPasswordSafe is also really handy, and I can (and do) carry around all my passwords on one of these guys.

hdparm is one of those things that Red Hat people never think of because installers do so much work for you these days. I remember shuddering at the thought of X based installers... how could it even know ahead of time if the monitor was multisync or not?? Ludicrous!!!

  11. Re:Defrag on NTFS on FireFox and Longhorn: Meant For Each Other? · · Score: 1

"Defragmenting itself" doesn't mean providing a tool that a user can click on, or schedule periodically. It means defragmenting ITSELF. High quality filesystems do not produce fragmentation in the manner that we have been used to for so long (like FAT anything or NTFS). The way the smallest chunks of files are indexed, and the way the data structures used to organize and link parts of files together can be made to eliminate the problem of defragmentation, as well as adding several useful features.
Ever wonder why modern unixes don't provide defragmentation utilities? I guarantee it's not because they forgot, or are trying to screw their users. It's because defragmentation programs are useless, annoying bloat.
I think that the reason microsoft didn't eliminate this in their first iteration of NTFS was simply because disks were smaller, and fragmentation wasn't so much of a problem when it was released (remember when that was?). At any rate, better file indexing, and smarter physical placement of file structures could reduce the problem on NTFS, perhaps by adding a database layer that was updated realtime by an OS process or thread running in the background.
Ok, so perhaps WinFS wasn't supposed to reduce fragmentation, but perhaps the purposes were related. If better indexing causes better performance, than the slowdown due to fragmentation might not be as pronounced, but at the cost of cpu time/memory to maintain the database, and of the disk space lost to fragmentation.
Well, microsoft is slashing winfs in a big way, probably to reduce the cpu hit, and also to spin the inevitable complaints about indexing services running in the background. Remember the win 98SE and win ME days? it was considered a power user 'trick' to kill the findfast service that ran in the background. what happens to winfs, consequently NTFS, when people want to do the same, but can't? WinFS is for PHB's who are dreaming about better integration between office documents and office applications. Defragmenting is for legacy win32 boxes.
Better file systems are for admins who don't want to deal with that. I have no problem with microsoft sharing the file system integration code so that the OS can be installed on your choice of file systems, like in the unix world. At least then their users could choose to never have to defragment.

Plus, you can join a 45 minute long game, play for a while, and quit out before the game is even over. You don't *have* to be a member of a tribe, you don't even have to be good! It's especially easiy to blend in on a 50+ player server... But you do get better quickly. The game itself has a much faster pace than most FPS games. Yeah, except here in Alaska, where the APUC are notoriously tight-assed, and live in the back pocket of our *two* real telecom companies, ACS (alaska communication systems or something) and GCI (general communication inc.), both of which are the Evil Empire for Alaskans... broadband prospects are basically nil if you live in the sticks. I know that we have a local DirecTV 'franchise' to install and distribute in town, but really, it's a joke.

And if you *do* get the local telco to lay a loop for you, and take it in the rear with all the regulatory fees and such, the cheapest T1 is close to $3000, and from the local telco, between $10,000 and $12,000 just for ONE. Yep, that's the same T1 as can be had for under $500 down south... except setup probably costs more.

Oh, yeah, I guess we do have a third party option (other than the two Evil Empires that don't offer service to my house...). Just take a gander at the wireless cable modem page on Alaska Wireless Cable's site to see why it's tough to take them seriously...

Ask one sometime how they feel about children being stoned to death for *any* reason, and you'll understand what this means. There is a reason why the the rabbinical order meets annually and evaluates the meaning of the Torah in the context of not only todays society and issues, but those to come (as far as can be truly discussed). It really makes me angry when folks point out hard religious differences as solid barriers to peace. They simply *do* *not* *exist*.

So, I disagree that collaborative efforts on the personal level will have no noticable effect on the long term peace process; rather, I think that it is a very important step. Folks have to realize that memberso of the demographic that author free and open source software have already chosen to open parts of their minds. Sure, perhaps some close other parts, but the will to open up is there, and has already been exercised.

Also, remember that comparing the effect of a number of personal collaborative relationships between Israeli and Arab populations will certainly have a much greater affect than the previously mentioned parallel between the US and the USSR. Think of the populations involved; these countries are tiny in comparison, so each person who thinks as an individual in an Arab nation (or in Israel) has far, far greater personal power and influence, by *default*.

    I hope they realize that.
