You can't have it both ways -- I'm either paying for the software license (in which case I have the right to make a backup or archival copy and they don't have the right to include technology that stops me from doing this) or I'm paying for the CD itself. And if I'm paying for the CD itself then it ought to cost a few bucks -- not $50.
Actually you can. What if what they are sellling you is a package deal-- one cd with the license to use the CD. You can't buy the CD outside of the package, and you can't buy the software outside of the package. Fair use laws would probably allow backups even in this case, however, they would be in no obligation to sell you another CD without the license (because you already own the license, from your scratched copy). So you are partially right, you are legally allowed to make a backup. However, legally, they are under no obligation to make it easy. Standard disclaimers apply-- IANAL

It should be possible to make a run anywhere application on linux that will run on windows-- for the most part. Of course, details like file path formats are different between the platforms, so in certain cases a little mojo might be needed to work. Actually, it is mostly a case of 'best practices' and assuming nothing about the user's configuration (i.e. don't guess whether they have windows installed on C:\, find out. Don't guess that their home directory is /home/blah, use the objects given to you and find out).

As far as the UI libs go, a lot of the time, they are going to have bindings into native code-- but that is something the libraries handle for you. So assuming your qt library or whatever has linux and windows support, it should work on both platform. Obviously, if a coder screws up one side or the other, there will be issues, but that can be said of any kind of multiplatform development-- or any development at all.

I'm sorry for the moderation, really, but it is out of my control. I dug around and actually found the speech (google wasn't helpful, but someone I know actually had a link to speech-- the title indicated that it was about homeownership, but that was only the first half or so), and you're right, it does specifically mention broadband (specifically, not taxing broadband, and providing stimulus to the broadband sector [which I guess would mean subsidies to companies to provide broadband in traditionally unprofitable markets]).

Well, even though the article title and the /. write up say broadband, the only actual statement they provide from GWB is for 'high speed internet' (unless I missed something). Keep in mind that earthlink considers themselves high speed internet. Heck, I think even some aol commercials boast being high speed.

I haven't read the actual speech, so I could be wrong, but I think he called for something even more loosely defined than 'broadband'. He could just be talking about some kind of nationwide 56k dialup scheme. It is unlikely he actually knows, or that any of the people adivising him actually know (and I'm not just saying that because it is Bush-- there are very few technically saavy politicians at all). They probably just took a poll and said, "Gee, people want faster internet. I wonder how we can make this work for us."

I don't play games anymore, I'm too busy. I'm sure if I did, I could find some that played on linux (I used to be a halflife fiend, and I know lots of people who run that under WineX; or maybe UT2004).

My linux system is stable, and is a great development platform for the kind of work I do.

When I need a program to do something, I type one line, wait a bit, and it is installed. In order to uninstall it, I type one more line.

It has everything I need-- development tools, internet utilities (browsers, ftp, IM, ssh, etc), word processors, lots of scientic tools.

I like KDE and GNOME both more than I like the windows ui, but slightly less than I like the ui in os x.

As far as hardware support, I don't own anything that isn't supported. This isn't because I don't buy things linux doesn't support, it is because I built the machine, booted it up and everything "just worked." My friend has the same sound card as me (a sound blaster variant) and couldn't find drivers for it for anything less than windows XP.

That's another thing. When linux upgrades, it doesn't cost me $200s to upgrade with it.
